Title: Hurdy's Golf .:R - project 600bhp.

3. Valet mode - restricts power during visits to dealers
4. Kill switch - immobiliser.

http://www.giacusa.com/news.php?newsid=147

Custom intake with Forge Motorsport 3" MAF housing and Evoms front end intake and dry filter.

RS4 136bar fuel pressure return valve

Custom Full Turbo-back exhaust system with 3.5" downpipe, 100 cell sports cat and 3" tail section.

Loba high pressure fuel pump

Loba Motorsport L0400 hybrid turbo.

Devil's own water methanol injection - http://www.methanol-injection.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=28

Suspension/drive-train Modifications

HPA Haldex Gen IV race controller with remote switching - I'll let HPA explain this one, but it is well worth doing!
http://www.hpamotorsport.com/haldex.htm

Bilstein B16 PSS10 coilover suspension

Whiteline heavy duty droplinks

Full Powerflex poly bushing front and rear

Whiteline Anti-lift kit

H&R front and rear anti-roll bars

Team Dynamics Pro race 1.2 alloys - 8x18 ET45 - 9kg per alloy

Goodyear-Eagle F1 assymetric 2's - 235/40/18 95Y  XL

Original post......

The car is obviously Steel Grey From the pics.
5 door
DSG
has 5.5k miles on the clock.
1 previous owner from new who chopped it in as his wife was expecting/just had twins.

The car has Satnav, phone prep, Dynaudio speaker upgrade, front and rear parking sensors (for the missis!  :D) leather, and even a rare option of a sunroof. I know this car is never going to be the lightest car, so an extra kg or two for a sunroof ain't going to matter too much. 19" talladega alloys (will get chopped for some 18's). The only extra's I would have liked was the ACC and cruise, but the former can be fixed with Bilstein's and the latter is an easy fix.  8)

I've already ordered a few bits.....

Airtec Intercooler on a current group buy.
New OEM hpfp and Autotech internals

The plan is to put on the new Loba L04XX turbo and supporting mods. My local tuner (Statllers) currently have a development one on their Edition 30 DSG and it is running 450+ bhp

Here are a few pics from the dealer.

How much 'street fixing' have you been doing this year!?

Looks lovely mate, great colour also :afro:

Is your plan just for the turbo or will it be along similar lines as the polo ie WMI/massive brakes/full suspension etc etc

The turbo will require a lot of supporting mods in the coming months. WMI will be taken from the Polo, converted to 4 point direct injection and fitted to the .:R.

Loba do 360mm 2 piece floating discs with RS4 calipers, so that is the plan for brakes....these are droolworthy!!!!!

Full suspension too.

Plus some tasty carbon fibre parts

More madness John, love it

I know you wouldn't expect any less from me jv.

This is just the long term effect of coming out for a passenger lap in my silver Golf Syncro back in 2010.

It's left you hankering after some silver AWD goodness ever since.

Just don't expect it to be as raw and exciting as my car, ok?

Hopefully, I will actually get a chance to see this one a bit better than the Polo which I see flashing past me every now and again Forgemasters way.

Either way, I am sure great things will come of this  Good luck.

Hello

Someone from Edition 38 pointed me to your thread.

This might strange but i'm trying to source some cars for an event taking place in northampton on the 4th or 5th Sept. One of the cars is a VW Golf R...

When i say event all it will invlove is you turning up with your car for about 4/5 hours. Having a bit of a drive and then going home with a fair bit of wedge in your back pocket. It does not invlove you driving your car hard or fast or any of that stuff!

Sorry i can't tell you loads about it on an open forum but if you are intrested in knowing more and if you can get to the event on either of these two days let me know.

The money you will be paid is well worth it. You will also get a hotel and fuel paid being that you live so far away.

nickturner90@hotmail.com is my email.

Pick the car up next week and then off to a few places for parts fitting.

The Loba L04XX turbo is still in development at Statllers, but they have already ordered me one

Current state of tune of the ED30 DSG that is running it is this......499.4bhp 440+lbft with 420lbft at over 6krpm!
To give a comparison, a stage 2+ K04 car does 350-360bhp on this dyno and this turbo makes that at about 4300rpm!!

Revo beta test map using multipoint direct Water Methanol injection - good job I've saved my WMI kit then!

No, this car is going to be more of an all rounder. There's a chap called Teff in Romania who is already over 600bhp and he is in the middle of converting the car to a GT3586GTX and going for 700bhp+

I will be happy at stage 2+ for a start and 360bhp AMD then over the winter go to 400+ bhp. I'm not planning on doing internals. Just after a car with a sub4 second 0-60 and 1/4 mile capability in low 12's or even late 11's.

I'm just happy at the thought of being in an .:R to be honest

Just been out for a play today. The Revo map went on down at Statllers and we had a little play to get her set up right.

Took the car out with the performance box and using launch control ( oh how I missed it! ) I managed the following. Bear in mind this is JUST a map at stage 1......

And today's exploits at the same place have resulted in the following. This was done with the addition of the Evoms intake, an almost empty fuel tank, no spare in the boot and most importantly using launch control and letting the gears change automatically (unlike the first outing where my brain was wired to skip most of first gear manually) and a relatively cool engine.

So, I went down to Midland VW today and saw Chris (Topher off Golfgti.co.uk) and had the DSG map (Custom-Code.....rather good map too ) and HPA Gen4 Haldex remote race controller fitted. Great day out fiddling about with the car and customising the individual settings in the DSG map was great. Cannot fault the guys at Midland VW at all.

Came back early afternoon to do a little bit of testing with the Racelogic Performance box. The DSG map and Haldex controller have improved things slightly.......

I can't imagine what Stefan's (TEFF's) car will be like, but I'm in a happy place at the moment

Stage 2+ should make quite a bit of difference to the 0-100 time and the 1/4 mile, but I doubt that there will be as much of an improvement on the 0-60time as I think most of the work has already been done for that now.

Part of me....no fook that, all of me wishes I'd skipped the Lexus and Polo and gone straight to the .:R

I could have saved myself tens of thousands of moolah and had a 600bhp .:R by now!

Not finished power mods at all yet DH.

Still only Stage 1 with an intake. Once the car is stage 2+ with WMI it should be around 3.5 seconds to 60mph and under 9 seconds to 100mph and around 12 seconds flat for the 1/4 mile.

Check yer diary against their schedule when the 2013 calendar comes out and then talk to ProComp about an arrive and drive package for any dates you can make:

It'll be a go or a no-go and could be a fantastic intro.

Post by: scarr89 on 25 September 2012, 13:25
Those stats quoted are insane. Going for the most powerful R?

No, this car is going to be more of an all rounder. There's a chap called Teff in Romania who is already over 600bhp and he is in the middle of converting the car to a GT3586GTX and going for 700bhp+

I will be happy at stage 2+ for a start and 360bhp AMD then over the winter go to 400+ bhp. I'm not planning on doing internals. Just after a car with a sub4 second 0-60 and 1/4 mile capability in low 12's or even late 11's.

I'm just happy at the thought of being in an .:R to be honest

The .:R will be having an upgrade to stage 2+ this coming week.

Milltek full turbo-back exhaust with race cat and ceramic black tips
Autotech HPFP upgrade
RS4 rail valve
Stage 2+ mapping

Should make it a little faster.

The revised Revo Stage 2+ went on today. Had the car on Statllers dyno and did 312bhp at stage 1 with the Evoms fitted and then 356bhp at stage 2+ with the Milltek and Autotech HPFP internals fitted. Managed to fit a full launch in to 60 and did a 3.6 straight off. The car feels MUCH stronger and as soon as I can do some runs with the PerformanceBox at the normal spot I think the results will be easily better.

Great day at the Pod. Lovely weather. Only did 16 runs in total. Got the hang of the car launch and shift points by the end of the day. A little different to launching on the road. I was avoiding the water for most of the day until Luke said it actually may help as I was getting too MUCH grip. After that my times dropped by another couple of tents of a second.

Fastest time was a 12.615 and the fastest time with a passenger was a 12.787.

The car still feels like it is held back by the torque limitation in the map and with an extra 40-50lbft should help drop the times more.

A few pics...list of runs (didn't pick up the last two runs which we're 12.62 and 12.63)

No, still on the heavy ass 14kg 19"ers.

Today was more about getting to know where the car stands performance wise and finding out the best launch points and shift points for the 4WD. So plenty more performance to pull out of the car still.

APR's stage 3 Golf R arrived very late in the day and laid down a 11.87@117.

This will be a decent target for me and hopefully next year will see my car at this point or faster.

GIAC released their stage 2 map yesterday. Their stage 2 map is the equivalent of Revo stage 2+. It was developed on GIACs own in-house Golf R, with just the normal bolt ons of....

Milltek full TBE
Autotech hpfp internals
Modified Forge Twintake

I was lucky enough to try this map over the weekend and I must say I am very impressed with it. It revs out to the redline swiftly and smoothly and without any hint of hesitation. The pull is strong and is easily faster than my Torque limited Revo set-up. 100mph comes up in under 10 seconds and I reckon low 12's at the Pod are easily achievable on this set-up.
I went out with Steve Jr from Statllers as GIAC asked for some maf logs on the hammer map that was on before stage 2 and then some logs on stage 2.

The Hammer map made 265g/s and on the dyno made 347bhp and just under 350lbft

The Stage 2 map made 296g/s and on the dyno made 379bhp@6480rpm and 360lbft. The 360lbft of torque held for almost 2000rpm rather than just being a peak figure, and then dropped off to 320lbft@6000rpm.

The car is also running the GIAC stage 3 DSG software and runs supremely well with the stage 2 engine map.

Overall I'm glad I made the move to GIAC and will stick with them from now on.

Any questions, ask away

Alloys and tyres went on today. I decided to go for gloss black to match the trim on the front rear and wing mirrors of the car.

Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2's - Gloss black - 8"x18" - ET45 - 9kg a corner (My OEM Talladega's are over 14kg a corner! )

Tyres fitted

Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 2's - 235/40/18Y - 95XL

A couple of pics - sorry about the dirty car!

Initial impressions are.....

That the steering is definitely improved - feels quicker and a little lighter
The tyres are quieter
The deeper sidewall gives an improved ride quality
The suspension feels quicker to react to undulations and doesn't crash quite as much as before

All in all a successful mod.

Just bought all the bits I need to sort out the suspension.

Ordered/stashed ready to go on......

Bilstein B16 PSS10's - had these on the Golf ED30 and they were superb.
Whiteline heavy duty droplinks - a new addition not tried before, but worthwhile as the R is heavy.
Powerflex full polybush front and rear kits - Takes the remaining slack out of the suspension and last much longer than the OEM saggy rubber ones.
Whiteline Anti-lift Kit - Help my launches a little more.
H & R Front and rear ARB's - Should help me get a little more oversteer in the car and cut out the car leaning in cornering.
THS engine mounts - will keep the engine stable under load, so no rocking engine and better transmission of power to where it should go....the wheels.

Now brakes...hmmmmm.

Looking at a few different set-up's, but so far the favourite is WAAAAAAAAYYYYY better than a TAROX BBK.

I love the angled side stance and the rear stance of this car, it looks so menacing.

Have you got any videos of the sound of it?

Also love the wheels, looks like it could handle some 20" rims to fill those arches. What size are those wheels, 18"?

I would imagine that 20's would kill the handling though.

Yeah naturally it would ruin it, I was talking purely from an aesthetical viewpoint. I'm sure once John has the 'Billsteins' fitted it'l be dropped 30mm or so and it'll be hugging the arches.

Today the R went on a hub dyno, supposedly the most accurate way to directly read WHP and wheel torque on a car. The car was done in FWD mode for reference.

313.9whp & AFR at 12.5
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/GolfRDSGGIAChubdynoAFR-1.jpg)

Wheel torque at 333.5lbft

Did you get a time of a 4wd launch? No wheel spin if all bolted to the hubs right?  :undecided:

Also...Hate to be thinking negatively, but if this is bolted to your hubs then you won't have any friction of the wheels, correct? So would this lead to an over read on the power figures?

...Just got me thinking.

Booked in for fitting next week.

Also being fitted is the Devil's own Water Methanol Injection kit. Twin point injection system. Should get me over the 400bhp barrier as per the thread title......at last!

The suspension parts were fitted today so here are a few comparisons and pics of the day.....

Stock v's H&R ARB diameter - no weight saving here as they are solid
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/IMAG0450.jpg)

Stock v's Whiteline front droplinks - the droplinks are stiffer & lighter
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/IMAG0449.jpg)

The kit chosen was due to recommendations and good reviews on here and other forums....Cheers guys

Surprisingly all the Powerflex bushes were MK5 parts. Part numbers below....

The coilovers still have to settle and have about another inch lowering available both front and rear.

Bit of an update....

The car goes in next week for it's re-spray after the scratch damage on the rear door from a vandal. some other bits may well get colour coded at the same time to cheer me up!

Also next week the R will have the intake changed to a larger one with a larger MAF housing. This is to incorporate the upgrade maps that will go on by GIAC onto the new switchloader I'm getting....

A. Valet mode - for when anyone apart from Statllers has it.
B. GIAC Extreme pump map - for when I'm on normal 99ron fuel
C. GIAC Extreme race map - for when I'm running WMI and/or race fuel.

The GIAC Race map has seen R's with DSG using it into the 11's on the 1/4 mile with just WMI, so WMI and race fuel should be "interesting"

I think my next update may well be upgrade clutchpacks!

The Polo went 5 months ago. A lot can happen on a build thread in that time.

All being well I should get the car back tomorrow evening.

A few dyno pulls should reveal any increase in power/torque.

I'll post up as soon as I get the results.

Update....

Well,

At the moment it is all about getting the newly fitted WMI to run sweet. My tuner has been trying various combinations of hardware with the WMI to see what runs best as he had several combos to look at. The results are phenomenal.

My mate will have to forgive me for using his stage 2+ Golf R as a baseline as it was the best guide as his run was done after the dyno was calibrated and only a few days away, but also under the same conditions.

Here goes.......

I'm getting more power at 4200rpm than the APR stage 2+ Golf R made at peak power and where the Golf R makes peak torque at 3400rpm my Golf R makes equal or more than that torque from 3050rpm to 5350rpm.

For reference max gain is 65bhp@4350rpm over Apr stage 2+ and a mahoosive 85lbft@4200rpm.

Peak power gain is 40bhp and 65lbft over Apr stage 2+

This just goes to show just how much midrange power and torque is added by WMI on GIAC.

Stage 2 GIAC gave a few bhp more than APR stage 2+, but had 15lbft less torque. Which reminds me, I need to get some figures for the GIAC extreme pump map without WMI!

The car isn't just a little faster, it is a LOT faster. Mid range ooomph is much more positive and it just keeps coming! All-in-all WMI is a great modification to do for the performance returns when done right.

Oh, just got this pic as well.

My before and after WMI

The differences in software are....

Before
GIAC stage 2 software
Evoms intake

After
GIAC extreme map in Race mode
VF Intake - 3"MAF housing
Devils Own Water Methanol Injection
BSH throttle pipe

Exactly 60bhp and 90lbft more at 3500rpm!! Not bad returns for the outlay cost.

The midrange on this R is now mental.

Graph....
This was the first run up graph on WMI before fine tuning.

Update...
Been out late today to get a run or two to see how the car is running. Did an each way 0-60 run to get a more accurate average. Downhill the 0-60 was 3.2, uphill it was 3.7. Works out at an average of 3.45 seconds for the dash to 60. The car is running very strong and is currently in race mode on wmi.  8)

A bit bored this afternoon resulted in.........

The R is amazing to drive, whether it is casually driving around town or out on a spirited drive  in the countryside or even blasting down the motorway.

To put the car into a category for the 0-60 time you are looking at the cars below to get a similar acceleration.......

Lamborghini Reventon - 3.4 seconds
Porsche 997 GT2 - 3.4 seconds
Ferrari 458 Italia - 3.4 seconds
Ferrari Enzo - 3.5 seconds
Nissan GTR35 - 3.5 seconds
Pagani Zonda F - 3.6 seconds

Christ on a bike! Thats probably still less than a fifth of the price of the cheapest one of them, even with mods! So whats the plans next then, Upgraded turbo aside? Do you need to do any mods or upgrades to compliment the turbo?

The plan is to get a decent decat on the car as well as an uprated in-tank pump and some small tweaks before moving on to a bigger turbo. I don't want to ruin the day to day drive ability by going with something too big as that isn't the point of this car. I want a decent gain of probably 50bhp over what I have now without sacrificing spool. A hard task, but it will get there.

Went to a local dyno day today. Mixed bag of cars, but who got the highest power of the day?

Spoke to Garry the dyno operator and he said the dyno reads very accurately and no more than 4bhp on a car like mine.

A chap had his stage 4 Focus RS on the dyno expecting 400bhp and made 367.7bhp and 373.7lbft!

Mine made more!

Dastek dyno

My result.....

Unless you are allowed on the base as a serviceman you won't be able to get on. All the runners and spectators had to have security screening beforehand.

If you are a serviceman then it is on Sunday 24th March.

Such a shame as I am in Scotland, would have been a good day out. I know a few people who will be there on motor cycles. Also a friend has his R32 GTR @ Marham, 700 ponies worth of power!

You will do more than hold your own I reckon. Are they doing anything with the ring road? I know sometimes they make almost a 'track' from parts of it.

No, the ring road isn't used, there is a strict 30mph limit enforced around the rest of the base. It is basically a full speed run over the 1.5 mile airstrip.

Holding my own maybe an issue, there are a lot of Porsches and R8V10's going along with modified TTRS's.
Steve will be going in his Porker and it should have over 800bhp. It would have had over 900whp, but the turbos haven't arrived yet and time is getting on. It does 0-100mph in under 6 seconds!!

TTS cover finally ready for fitting.

Matt metallic grey along with gloss black, deleted the Audi badge and filled in the recess, re-painted the TFSI badge section and finished off with 3M gloss carbon vinyl. Don't know if the 3M vinyl will last under the bonnet but it is gloss black underneath, so no biggie to remove if needed

So, today the car had Nology Silverline spark plugs fitted, the WMI altered and a few "sparkly" bits added.

I was surprised how close the engine cover colour is to the Steel Grey body colour even though it isn't the same grey ( or even meant to be )  as the Matt colour. Plus the R8 oil filler cap goes nicely with the MAF housing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGBniCLOfBg

Thanks for the vids Luke

It was a bad day for trying to set any records. I'm glad I left the race fuel at home for the day and just ran the V-Power and WMI for a baseline. Best run of the day was a 12.3038 with a 1.7741 sixty foot time, the terminal should have been somewhere between 108 & 109mph, but something blew past one of the speed sensors and bagged me a 130.67mph terminal instead!. The car was full weight including over half a tank of fuel, another 5 litres of water to clean the car, 2 helmets, various cleaning stuff and all Luke's videoing stuff plus his rucksack. The headwind was atrocious and knocked a little off my times and also just happened to be the hottest day of the year to date! The car wasn't running perfectly as it seemed to have some power loss going into 5th gear....just seemed a little "thinner" than normal! Anyway, just 0.03 seconds off the 4WD K04 record in those conditions isn't too bad at all.

Update......

Well it has been a while and the R has had a few issues lately, which I'm glad to say now have been resolved by Steve Jr and Craig at Statllers.

Not a massive update really, but today saw the E-Boost 2 controller go on. The R didn't like the manual boost controller too much. It made part throttle quite twitchy and coming off full boost was quite violent at times. It did the job fine for the strip, but for the road it was very much a temporary fix. So now the E-Boost controller is sat in prime place with an OSIR vent pod  just to the right of the steering wheel and an excellent piece of kit it is too. Jake ( Danishmkvgti on the MK5 forum) had one of these fitted a while back and likes his a lot, so I thought I'd take the same plunge. Operationally it has quite a few options including progressively controlling the WMI and once set up is VERY smooth in operation, I'd even go as far to say that it feels smoother than using the N75 sensor OEM boost regulator.

Peak held boost is around the 28psi level and drops back towards the redline.

All set now for the final phase and a Loba L0400 turbo upgrade. Fast spooling ( faster than the OEM K04 ) and with over 400bhp capability the R should finally be where I want it to be.

Quick pic.

Update.......

Dyno'd the R on the Loba L0400........

Peak torque up 15lbft Peak power up 28bhp

Although at the top end it doesn't run out of puff like the K04 and so at 7,000 rpm it is making over 50bhp more power and over 40lbft more torque.

Spool is very slightly better, but as near as makes no discernable difference.

The map is MUCH smoother and stable in conjunction with the turbo so around town at lower rpms it feels better and overall I'm very happy.

Big thanks to Steve Jr and Craig at my tuners Statllers for putting up with my pacing about like an expectant father!

Update.....

Did a few runs using the Dynolicious app. Using 99ron without WMI.

Each way runs were almost identical.

60' time is over 0.3 down on normal due to needing new rubber. Means I should be around 0.5 seconds quicker with a normal 1.8 launch to the 60'

Not a bad day yesterday. I improved on my best, but still cannot get the 60' times I managed earlier this year.

12.11@112.25

Closer to 11's, but need to get my 60' time down. My best 60' yesterday was 1.85 which gave me my best 1/4 mile time, but is still over 0.1 slower at 60' than I'm used to. Just reducing my launch would  get me into the 11's, but not this time.

I've asked for a revised launch rpm, which the map will allow, so we shall see what happens with this and slightly grippier tyres.

Always good to improve.

is it just the launch that's slowing the 60' time?  What rpm are you currently launching at, and what launch rpm will you get with a tweaked map?

It is the launch and a little more fine tuning with the E-boost controller and WMI.

I can choose the launch rpm's I want with the DSG map and GIAC will revise it to suit.
Currently the launch rpm's are set at 4,200rpm, but I've asked for a 4,500rpm launch revision.

Surely down to conditions?

When we race sometimes the whole grid is off pace by 0.5 but the conditions are good. Same as the month before. Also new tyres for us are faster than a set thats done 2 meets.

I know its karting and totally different, im just saying it might be conditions and not your car.

After a few adjustments and some nice cool weather recently I did another few 1/4 mile runs. I must say I'm impressed with how the car is running at the moment and using this method or recording my runs has yielded results within 0.05 seconds for the time at an official strip.

Update.......

The R is in the middle of having a new development exhaust fitted.

Full stainless steel system with 3 1/2" downpipe and 3" system. Lovely quality with even the flanges being made from investment cast stainless steel. Superb quality TIG welding too. Eventually it will have blued titanium tips to add a bit of bling to the rear. Should hopefully free up a few horsies. Sounds absolutely mental at full tilt!

Only one deep pop on the overrun from 4krpms as that is the max rpm's I can do with the DSG at standstill, but pops and burbles much better from higher revs on the road.

I can certainly see why.

On a recent trip home to Yorkshire (I come from Halifax), I set aside a couple of days to drive Snake Pass and the Upper Derwent Valley, followed by south Pennines and Dales, and was not disappointed.  It was superb driving. Kent is sadly lacking in that respect

Update.......

So with a little more tweakage, setting and playing with the boost controller I decided to have a dyno run on a hub dyno to get some accurate hub/wheel HP. The dyno was a Dynapack, which is the same make/model that APR use to run their Golf R's on in the USA. The figures are at the hub, so basically whp!!!

Even a minimum 10% addition to these figures for drivetrain losses works out at 408+bhp, more realistically would be around 12-15% losses. The run was only done with 99ron and 50/50 water, methanol. The run also only went to 6200rpms and was still gaining power. When Rick tried to alter the dyno to use more rpm's the dyno didn't want to know, so there are a few more whp in the bag yet. For comparison APR stage 3 figures are shown under my graph and are 371whp and 394wlbft compared to my 371whp and 388wlbft.

Yes, and to keep it true it will be dyno'd at Statller as normal to see what the peak gains are over the L0400 and stage 2+ cars.

So, I should have the R back for the weekend, just waiting on the TIAL housing to arrive from Owen Developments.

Final spec after much deliberation ended up being a bit overkill for how I am initially going to run it, but at least it will give me plenty of headroom for when pistons and rods are done.

Turbo kit specification......

Forced Performance HTA3071R turbo with TIAL .63AR housing. Turbo is a full Motorsport spec with all the FP options ticked.
Nortech custom tubular V-Banded manifold, fully CAD designed with external wastegate V-Band fitting.
Nortech custom 3.5" stainless steel downpipe with wastegate pipe plumbed in.
Turbodynamics 45mm external wastegate with 10psi spring.
All custom pipe work for cooling/lubrication.

As I mentioned, the turbo is a little OTT but has proven results on various cars over the GTX3071R and spool close to the GTX3067R. The turbo I specified will be initially run between 1.5 and 1.6 bar boost, which should achieve around 450bhp on Statllers dyno without WMI and in pump mode. For reference the L0400 using WMI, in race mode and at 2.1 bar made 369bhp on Statllers dyno, so I am looking at a peak gain of over 70bhp.

Longer term this turbo with supporting mods of pistons, rods, fuelling upgrades, intake manifold, cylinder head and cams will make over 550bhp, so should be a permanent fixture.

Well the R is finally back home with me and the new kit certainly works well. Can't wait to get the tune dialled in with the E-boost 2 controller. The fabrication work is second to none and the tubular manifold is a work of art. I was also very pleasantly surprised to see that they had done a stainless hard pipe down to the turbo, rather than the "collapsible" silicone pipes normally supplied with BT kits.

It will need some heat wrap and a heat shield to protect the intake.

Overall the kit is excellent and the HTA turbo spools brilliantly for its size. Well pleased.

Setting the scene....

A damp private track in backwoods of Yorkshire, the air rank with the odour of exhaust fumes and stretching out in front of you a thin sliver of gnarled black, damp, partly muddy, Tarmac curving gradually uphill into the distance. The gearstick snicked into manual mode and the ESP turned off, revs build and you are off..........the nearly worn tyres slip and grip, your head and eyes go funny with the G force and...........

Not bad to say it isn't even set-up fully yet the bum dyno said more power and the software calculates out at 447bhp. There's definitely more than spring pressure by the looks of it. 1/4 mile figures when I can after set-up.

I already have a new set of Toyo R1R's awaiting fitting. There are several more upgrades going to be done this year, but I will be running it through the summer roughly as it is. I still use it as my daily driver and with the DSG it is very good and doesn't feel like an old world BT conversion, with lots of lag etc.

So, a week has flown by since the turbo kit went on and I can honestly say this is THE single most awesome modification I have ever done. The R is running better and stronger than it has ever done and all the logging that Steve  at Statller did when setting it up on the dyno shows that the car is running exactly as it should. Fuelling, timing and boost are all spot on and the car feels very smooth on the road.

Negatives?
The lag - It is there if you press your foot down in a high gear at low revs, but you'd be daft to do this. It takes a little adaptation and re-learning on how to drive with this set-up over my K04 or Loba set-up although the benefits far outweigh the momentary lag.
Launch control - More difficult to get just right, but you don't really need it as it will still do 0-60 in under 4 seconds without it!

Positives?
The power delivery - Relentless and sooo seductive, where the K04 starts to slack off at 6krpm, this set up simply pushes you back hard into the seat all the way to the redline.
Fuel consumption - Appears to be better.....unless you press the fast pedal.
Driveability - the car just feels better to drive for not having the huge hump of torque low down in the rev range, smoother and more linear. Part throttle is excellent.
Speed - The obvious advantage really. This thing hauls ass. Make no mistake about it a stage 2+R wouldn't see which way this car went. Conservatively speaking, this will now do 0-100mph in under 8 seconds. The quarter mile time should drop significantly.
Safety - Not one I would usually put down here, but it has to be said that overtaking is a breeze and it seriously reduces the amount of time you are on the wrong side of the road and exposed.
Noise - Goddam it this thing makes a sound like a jet fighter at full WOT!
Flames - I have them and it looks mental!

Cost?
Well for my specific set-up it isn't cheap, but something like a CTS kit with a GTX3067R would yield similar results running off the GIAC BT map and wouldn't break the bank.
Title: Re: Hurdy's Golf .:R - project 500bhp.

Sounds like a great improvement all round then, apart from a bit of low down lag.  And 0-60 in 4s without launch control!!  You must be very pleased with it .

Out of interest, what was the benefit of going with the Loba before the big turbo conversion?

I wanted to see what the Loba would do as a modification to the R without going BT. It works very well as a fast road set-up as it has very little lag and climbs to big torque low down in the rev range. A BT R would have to be in the right gear on track to see off a Loba R. The Loba R would be more flexible.
On a sprint there would be no competition, The BT R would be faster as long as it can get the initial power down.

Today I went up to AET Motorsport who have a Dynapack dyno. This is the same make of dyno that APR use to tune and advertise their outputs for their cars. these Dynos are all calibrated to run within 0.3% of each other and so I thought I'd see what my R would do.
Only used the LOWER two of my three settings on the dyno as the higher setting was just hitting the over boost shutdown and I didn't want to push things too far.

Here was the result......465whp ( 511bhp - target achieved  ) and 385 wheel lbft.

Full boost just after 3500rpm!!

Stock Clutchpacks with my software will handle 450lbft without any slip. SSP Clutchpacks are rated up to 600lbft. It will be the gear sets and driveshafts that will probably let go first, but so far no aftermarket BT Golf R's have let go like this yet, which is a good sign.

Is that the cost from the very start of the R project to current point?

I suppose if you add the additional £12k-ish spent, onto the original purchase price of the R (bought used - assuming somewhere circa £20k), that works out roughly the same it would've cost to buy an R brand new (give or take any additonal costs).  But this way you have the benefits of modifying the car to suit your specific requirements and the challenge and enjoyment of the progressing through a project.

I saved £13,500 over the new price paid by buying the car at a year old with 5k miles on it.

That is for my current set-up. Remember I still have all the original parts, so when it comes time to sell I should get 1/2 to 2/3rds of my outlay on hardware back.

Yes, that makes it a very viable option.

If you get good resale prices on your used parts then you could be quids in (over the cost of a new R)

Good day at Santa Pod today. 120 miles each way and 5 runs up the strip. All runs done on low boost setting using 99ron and WMI and in pump mode ( not race file ). This was just to gauge performance and a day out.. The results were very good.

19oC, clear day with a 9-15mph headwind.

Result was a pass of 11.46 at 120.15mph off a fairly poor 60' time of 1.83 seconds.

My last run would have been my best as I did a 60' of 1.75 but geared up just as I hit the auto shift point and the ***** gearbox went up 2 gears and dropped me out of the power band. Still an 11.54 ET but would have been an 11.3.

All in all the car is running excellent.

Pic of two of the slips. I'm number 54.

For comparison a 650bhp GTR was doing 11.2 at 125mph

Update.....

My car now sort of scares me!!

After upping the power some more I decided to log some more runs.

Sub 3 to 60 and sub 7 to 100. 1/4 mile is looking like VERY low 11's and well over 120mph.

Next step....race map and race fuel testing.

Steve at Statller dyno'd the car today on it's new set-up. Still on 99ron and WMI though and the pump map. This was the result.....

(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/5a70f842b962e4dbd2fd1c35613d92a2_zps55b9120e.jpg) (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/hurdy_album/media/5a70f842b962e4dbd2fd1c35613d92a2_zps55b9120e.jpg.html)

Absolutely love the flatline torque, feels fapping brilliant on the road.
As most of you know, the last setting revision I had did 460bhp and 360lbft at Statller, which made 495bhp/465awhp and 425lbft/404wlbft at all 4 wheels at Awesome GTI on their newly revised (ie. reads lower) dyno calibration.

I'd say this new setting would comfortably make over 500 AWHP at Awesome GTI, which equates to around 540-550bhp!!!

All VERY positive for the engine build coming up later this year.

Screenshot of my VBOX times....

Well, over the last week or so I have been logging loads of data to see where the car is and how it is running.

Fuelling - Spot on from both in-gear pulls and launch through to warp speed.
Boost - Gradually been logging and tweaking up the boost. Car runs well at 28psi  :shocked:no surge or fluttering like a K04, just a pure strong pull towards the next gear.
Timing - Very little timing pull and even on my highest setting the timing pull is currently under -5.

With the VBox I have managed to run unofficial 11.2@123mph repeatedly, so I am hopeful the next trip to my official 1/4 mile raceway should reap a similar time/speed.

Also with the VBox my 0-60's are consistently 3 seconds flat or just under (depending on how clean the launch is) and 0-100 varies between 6.9 and 7.2 (again depending on launch).

100-200kph varies between 7.8 - 8.1 seconds
30-130mph varies between 10.9 - 11.2 seconds

All-in-all I am awe struck by just how quick the R is, not to mention how well the engine and gearbox (DSG) are holding up.

The DSG box still doesn't have a sniff of clutch slip on GIAC's newly revised stage 3 map, which is a solid testament to just how good their map is for this.
Similarly GIAC's stage 3 BT map works very well too.

And to get an Easter quote in....."I am one very happy bunny!"

Amazing you are achieving such results, especially on stock internals.  Aiming for 1/4 mile 10s territory then.  What 1/4 mile results are other Rs with a similar set up getting?  Have you perfected the launch?

Look forward to seeing how this progresses.

There is only one R in the world that has made it into the tens on the 1/4 mile and that is a fully built R DSG on race fuel in Australia. 10.876@127.51mph. As far as I know mine has the third quickest time on an official raceway in the world. I should beat the second quickest next time out.

I will be there all weekend. There are around four or five cars coming down from the Statller tuning fold varying from.......

430bhp L04XX Golf R
460bhp CTS Golf R
460bhp Nortech kitted Golf R
My 500+bhp Golf R
And a surprise Golf R that Statller have of their own.

All should be in the 11's except two, which maybe in the 10's

I suspect that is because 600 bhp needs stuff that works. Not stuff that blings. And VW will have put a lot of time and experience in to the stuff that works to start with.

11.33@ 125mph    and a fair gap between you and nearest runner up.  Sub 11s still for the taking but if it was easy, it wouldn't be worth chasing

Need some sort of a load cell to measure the thrust and calculate it into the whole result.
One thing is for sure, you would not need the plastic chain and sign behind the car when its on the rollers

Still around guys.

The R is having an engine build over the winter now along with upgrade clutch packs for the DSG gearbox, so updates will be along in the new year.

Also along should be that elusive ten second pass on the 1/4 mile.

Arrived back in the UK late Friday night after an eventful 5 Day "Tour de Europe".
I'd like to than DaveB the brake Guru from Vagbremtechnic for sorting me out an awesome brake set-up to go with and test out. 362mm 2 piece discs and full project Mu race pads for the 8 Pot brakes - performed brilliantly as they were set-up without the springs in. Never faded once, in fact I had so much brake power that the ABS would cut in first even when restricted!!!
Next up I'd also like to thank Steve Jr at Statller for going through my engine and suspension with a fine toothcomb to ensure everything was spot on for the trip. Before I went the car had all the major services done - Cambelt and waterpump, DSG service, Haldex service, engine service, sparkplugs, etc etc.

Ian and myself had booked ourselves in for two trackdays, back to back at Spa Francorchamps and the full VLN Circuit at the Nurburgring.
The start....
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/1504D3AC-EF64-4283-9EA9-1EF570801578_zpsfzcezhg6.jpg) (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/hurdy_album/media/1504D3AC-EF64-4283-9EA9-1EF570801578_zpsfzcezhg6.jpg.html)

After an uneventful haul over from the UK to France via the Eurotunnel we headed over to Belgium to Spa and stopped at the Hotel de la Source, which was bang next to the track.
The morning of the trackday at Spa greeted us with a smattering of snow over the cars and a flurry of light snow in the cold air. The ground was cold and wet, but our spirits were high in anticipation of the day ahead.
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/At%20Spa%202015/image.jpg1_zpsfmwsb8rj.jpg) (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/hurdy_album/media/At%20Spa%202015/image.jpg1_zpsfmwsb8rj.jpg.html)
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/At%20Spa%202015/image.jpg2_zps9qwg0d5m.jpg) (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/hurdy_album/media/At%20Spa%202015/image.jpg2_zps9qwg0d5m.jpg.html)

On arrival we spotted several decent track cars along with the odd Audi R8, Porsche and GTR thrown in for good measure.
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/At%20Spa%202015/image.jpg2_zpsnzjchmts.jpg) (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/hurdy_album/media/At%20Spa%202015/image.jpg2_zpsnzjchmts.jpg.html)

Ian went off to have an hours tuition whilst I went it alone and whilst on track spotted him in his blue R a few times....a bit damp!
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/At%20Spa%202015/image.jpg1_zpsvzuwdl4n.jpg) (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/hurdy_album/media/At%20Spa%202015/image.jpg1_zpsvzuwdl4n.jpg.html)

One from slightly after....
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/At%20Spa%202015/image.jpg3_zpsktyuacnh.jpg) (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/hurdy_album/media/At%20Spa%202015/image.jpg3_zpsktyuacnh.jpg.html)

Unfortunately Ian's car suffered from some kind of fuel starvation resulting in his car being towed off track. After taking off the coilpacks and replacing a sparkplug the diagnosis was still a mystery as his R wouldn't start.

Some more photos of the day...

Straight after the Spa trackday we shot over in my R to Germany and stopped at the Dorint Hotel at the side of the GP circuit at Nurburg. All seemed well for the following day ....until I opened the curtains in the morning!!!
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/At%20Spa%202015/At%20Nurburgring%202015/image.jpg1_zpsyay4ejzw.jpg) (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/hurdy_album/media/At%20Spa%202015/At%20Nurburgring%202015/image.jpg1_zpsyay4ejzw.jpg.html)
The photo doesn't quite do it justice as the snow was still coming down (sometimes heavily) until after 12 noon.
A quick photo of the lobby and you can just make out the snow on the main pitlane straight through the windows...

We finally got the green flag to go out on track at just after 12.30pm, but shortly after (and before my first lap) the track was closed again after a blizzard swept through at the other end of the Nurburgring section....
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/At%20Spa%202015/At%20Nurburgring%202015/image.jpg7_zpsr1msvk2h.jpg) (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/hurdy_album/media/At%20Spa%202015/At%20Nurburgring%202015/image.jpg7_zpsr1msvk2h.jpg.html)

A quick shout for Frozenspeed and their great photo piccies.

After another half hour I finally managed to break out on track for a few "cautious" laps and then back in after spending most of my time behind two cars who appeared oblivious to moving over and must have been doing some kind of chase camera laps.....
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/At%20Spa%202015/At%20Nurburgring%202015/image.jpg5_zpsz5q7mjfe.jpg) (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/hurdy_album/media/At%20Spa%202015/At%20Nurburgring%202015/image.jpg5_zpsz5q7mjfe.jpg.html)

Off out again and another few pics of the R...

Anyway the track was closed again after a Porsche 944 Turbo had a crash and almost at the same time a BMW M3 smashed into the armco. Very frustrating indeed!
Once opened up again I had Ian onboard for some extra ballast

With the day over at 4.30pm we headed off to the Pistonklaus restaurant for some well deserved grub and to mull over the days proceedings. Another sticker went on the R too....
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/At%20Spa%202015/At%20Nurburgring%202015/image.jpg1_zps2dmlk8vo.jpg) (http://s156.photobucket.com/user/hurdy_album/media/At%20Spa%202015/At%20Nurburgring%202015/image.jpg1_zps2dmlk8vo.jpg.html)

Finally the trip home beckoned and 13.5hrs travelling later the R was tucked up ready for it's next outing....

My mates R had some kind of fuelling failure, but until it is back in the UK we don't know what exactly happened. He still had a great time. I was chauffeur to him for the rest of the trip and took him to a few great places like the Pistonklaus whilst we were there. He wants to go again when his R is fixed.

Car was running Toyo R1R tyres, running 99ron V-Power and WMI and on the normal stage 3 pump map (not race! ). Quite a lot of slip of the clutches into 5th meant no real acceleration in that gear.

Need uprated clutchpacks now!

My quickest reaction time on that day was 0.015 of a second. Try reacting that quickly if you can.

End of an era!!

Are you selling it in it's complete current modified state?

The R is hopefully being sold as it is. To be up front I would really like someone to buy it and run it as it is or even develop it further as the car is too good to break back to stock. There are over £15k in parts alone on the car let alone the software....and that doesn't include labour for fitting them!!

So, if you fancy a 500bhp car that can do zero to sixty in three seconds and run the quarter mile in 11 seconds whilst being daily friendly and even does 30+ mpg on a run then look no further.

Car is up for sale through the link below....
