Sounds similar to what I had been experiencing recently combined with a reduction in fuel economy.VW checked it out yesterday and one of the inlet manifold motors had seized. That ties in with the link hurdy posted above I think.

How did VW assess that this was the fault? Did they report any fault codes?
Has the girlfriend managed to fill it with diesel?
If/when that fails, it will definately store a fault code.
