well since ive joined up i thought i ought to start a build thread to document progress, i know its not a gti but it should have some gti esque performance when its done.
ive come from minis then jap rwd stuff (mx5 turbos, 200sx's etc.) so all these funny fwd german boxes are really new to me so bear with me.
Now the car ive bought is a 1983 mk1 formel E 1.1, the car was originally my mates, he ran it for a while then sold it my brother who planned on doing it up as his first car. The car was partially stripped then partially prepped for paint and sent to the body shop to be blown over in the original mars red. however because of one thing and another its been sat at the body shop for last 4 month and now my brothers going to uni he cant afford to do it so ive stepped in to rescue it. Heres how it looked outside the bodyshop looking very sad for itself
The initial plan was to tidy the bits of rust up, theres a bit on the back valance and one arch needs work, then wip out the sewing machine sorry i mean 1.1 and paint the bay then have the whole car painted. Im still toying with colour ideas, either white, bright baby blue or kawasaki green and short term drop in a 1.8 8valve on a carb and 5 speed box. The Long term i plan was 20vt but id just like to get it on the road for now
So i got it round to a mates garage and set about sorting the arches out, spent a couple of days cutting the rot out and replacing it with good metal, wasnt too fussed about it being perfect as i planned on running with the arch trims on, actually turned out really well
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o33/minimat1988/photo-6.jpg)
then removed rear wash wipe as i felt it just looks neater
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o33/minimat1988/photo-5.jpg)
starting making good progress on it and still planned on doing the 1.8 8 valve conversion to start with, also read more and more about the 20vt conversion and liked the look of that long term. Then one saturday night after a beer or 9   got carried away and bought this
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o33/minimat1988/photo-11.jpg)
20 valve turbo powwweeerrrss!!!
so it kinda altered things as that was my budget for the build GONE! so now i need to sell some parts from the mk4 to cover costs a bit. Ther plan is now to get the car painted and built back up with the 1.1 in it, then do the swap as i really havent got space to store all the bits form both cars
So did some more work on the mk1. Repaired the spare wheel well as that was damaged, also repaired the back valance. Removed the rear towing eye and blanked it off and completely smoothed over the back valance. then applied a fresh coat of stonechip to this and the sills.
here it is mid progress, pictures arent great (youl soon realise im not a photographer)
hope all that makes sense, its kinda a combination of posts from a couple of other forums im on, il keep this one up to date as work progresses
thoughts welcomed

Great project :afro:
Good luck with it.

ahhhh i see, same colour 4 doors, and same bad grammer lol
it had to be saved, would have been wrong to let my brother scrap it (which is what he was talking about doing!)

bit more done this morning before work (yes before!! was at the garage before 8 and started work at ten lol)
got the tailgate all removed and did a bit more flatting, stonechip has all settled nicely overnight so should look smart
got 3 days off at end of week so im hoping to get it in paint then (well the shell anyways). Also decided to stick with the original colour as feal it could look quite smart sat on the floor with some nice wheels

Not much left of the original colour (faded) so would look great with a fresh coat on.
How low are you thinking of dropping it and any idea on wheels?
-
yeah its obviously having a full repsray, just back in its original mars red. as for lowness and wheels im still not sure. I cant go too mad with the ride height as the estate i live on has mahooosive speed bumps and i dont fancy very much ripping the bottom off everytime i drive it, plus with the 20vt conversion the sump sits very low anyways. but it WILL be coming down
wheels im really not sure, i saw one on 14 inch banded steels and it looked smart but the tyres are a fortune in 195-50-14. Toying with the idea of some old school 13's but i need to be able to clear my brakes so that might be a nono. Ive got some deep dish 15s in shed that can go on to start with as the bbs copies that are on are square anyways, im open to suggestions and on the lookout for a set

tiny update today but still progress, managed to grab an hour between finishing one job and starting the next. Welded up the holes in the front panel and smoothed them off, so thats ALL the welding now done beofer paint.
got 3 days off work from tomorrow so watch this space for hopefully a massive update, one involving a fresh coat of mars red!

mat
-
5 looked
MK1s looking a shed load better already... can't wait to see the top coat. :afro:
-
yeah the 5 looked good in pics but up close it was a bit of a mess tbh, still made money from it when i sold it so not all bad. the 5 i had before that was immaculate, and was making 250bhp
put a couple more coats of white on before i left, its only a base to make sure the red all comes out the same shade and as bright as poss, then its a good few coats of 2k laquer for good measure!!

mat
Just checking - this is being sprayed red on a white base coat??? :undecided:
-
Yeah, doors are a different colour altogether so paint place reckoned put a base down first. Why?
-
It's just that red is notoriously difficult to get right on a white base. Oddly enough black is often used.
-
I've always put red over a White base, makes it really bright so since I was doing whole car thought why not.
Massive update on the way
Mat

well ive just got in from a long old day on this, was down at the garage at 6am!! absolutely destroyed!  same again tomorrow
had major grief with spray gun and water in compressor but thats a different story all together, needless to say i WILL NEVER paint another car lol.
anyways il let pics do talking, got the car and the tailgate done, need to do doors and bonnet tomorrow

Well you say that now but you might change your mind on another car one day... Wish I had somewhere I could paint!
Good luck with the rest of it, look forward to seeing the rest.
-
I just havent got the facilities or the patience. And in-between jobs today it had to be rolled out in to the street so not ideal. But it's turned out well so it's not all bad
Mat
-
looks okay from the pictures and aha welcome to my world I <3 PAINT
how are you going about wiring for the 20vt conversion
-
Well I've got a full mk4 golf as a donor so I planned on literally using the whole loom clocks and ignition for ease and cheapness. Plus it's been doing the job perfectly well on the mk4 since it left the factory. But if I decide to goemtal power later il look into changing it
What loom are you using?
Mat
-
Looks good.
A lot of these conversions going on at the moment, so tempting!
Keep up the good work.
Heres a good thread for reference: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=175997.0

Crazyquiff engine mounts and Qpeng ecu/loom and down pipe = 200bhp
-
Well I've looked at the crazyquiffs mounts and they don't look that hard to make, but it's all a matter of time n money as if it's gonna take a couple of days then I'm better off buying ready made (I worked in a fabricators for ten month and can still use all the equipment but I'm that busy at minute the saving wouldn't be worth it)
And the qpeng loom would be nice but I don't have a spare grand
-
well ive just got back from the third 12 hour day on it and its finally all painted!!!!! im absolutely destroyed but am definately pleased with the way it turned out. but seriously thats it, never agin lol
Anyways there some pics here, need to get it put back together as a 1.1 and tested in next two week as ive got to drive down to snetterton in it a week on friday  should be fun with 1.1 powers

well since this is turning out to be one of the fastest turn arounds ever thought i best get a few hours in again today . Got all the glass in all 4 doors, all handles on and workin, indicators custom fitted in front bumper holes and finished slipping the grill on (this will be replaced with a badgeless) also slipped mirrors on.
windscreen place is coming tomorrow to fit a new screen and also to refit back window, then its nearly ready to get tested (assuming i get the back lights working)
also test fitted the 15x8 alloys that will be going on for time bein

also sold the front end off the mk4 so thats some money back in pot
mat

Wow..... fantastic progress, really loving this.
What did you use for your indicators, they seem to fill the gap really well?

Ring rl014 clear reversing lamps and orange bulbs. I can't take all the credit for the idea as I've seen it on another forum.

Managed to get an hour yesterday but that was all :( got new wheels on along with the arch trims, also figured out why back lights weren't working (stupid dodgy earth)
Windscreen place also came and fitted new screen and refitted back one. Just need to put wipers on then it's ready to test!!
Mat

well heres an update ive been waiting for, managed to get a few hour in after finishing uni and before starting work so thought i know il work on the golf lol
managed to get the last few finishing bits on to make it legal, so got it mot'd.... And it PASSED!!! only advisory was pitted front discs and as there destined for the bin it doesnt matter
first impressions are its slow, like i need to get the 20v in now slow lol. but seriously drives lovely, definately needs beeting with the low stick now tho. Also ignore the front number plate, i just stuck it there to get it tested as it will be going on the front splitter but i need to do a bracket first. Needs a good polish and the interior putting back in (im on the lookout for a full mk1 gti interior if you have one). Oh and the alternator died just for laugh on way home
anyways here it is now, thoughts welcomed as ever

Fecking amazing turnaround... wish I had the time and funds to work this fast.
Looks ace and congrats on the MOT pass.
Here's to phase 2. :afro:
-
Thanks, it hasn't been a massive cost this far, it's been more my time. And since I don't have any of that its meant grabbing an hour before work or working on it until midnight.
Biggest cost now will be bribing the girlfriend to get her off my back ready for stage 2 lol

Good luck with that... Who's gear did you use to spray it then? Works?
-
my dad has a garage, so they have a compressor for the air tools and a old spray gun for blasting primer on stuff theyve welded(not ideal for trying to do bodywork). So its not like ive had great facilitys lol, its got the worst lighting of any workshop in the country and its permenantly dusty because of the steel works next door. But its better than doing it on the drive (well maybe maybe not lol)
Anyways been trying to source some bits this morning, just stupid stuff like trim clips and a drivers door seal but there obsolete from vw so onto ebay it is then

Still, could be worse, could have nowhere or no kit.... Trim clips are regularly sold by the same seller on ebay at the mo.. Met him last year at a show. Apparently you can ask for specifics rather than the full kit that he usually lists.
-
well few more finishing off bits done but since im working 2 jobs and in my final year at uni ive literally got no time at the minute :( but hey ho who needs sleep
Got some more interior bits back in, got the black strip on down the sides and stuck the gti splitter back on. Also refitted the pressed plate on the old bracket (this will be getting replaced)
Had some MAJOR grief with alternators, mine packed up so went all way to other side of thingytone for one, this was wrog as it had terminals not a multiplug, so went to lincoln and bought one with the correct multiplug only to realise when i got back it had different mounting points!!! So split both alternators made a frankenstienanator and now all is well and were charging properly lol
Also sourced some BIG brakes so just waiting for these to come
Pics as it stands at minute

sweet mate lookin good when are you looking to start stripping it for the 20vt
-
the plan is get ALL the bits together for the conversion before i start as ive been in similar situations before waiting for parts.
im going to sort the brakes and suspension first as i can do it easily, so brakes on when they arrive then some coilovers as the lowering spirngs that are on it are awful
Im leaning towards using the all the mounts that crazyquiffs sell along with the hydro clutch conversion bits as im limited on time at minute
mat
-
just realised that was prertty much waffle lol
As soon as ive got all bits together and ive got rid of the mk4 shell then it can start to come apart
mat
-
blue waffle
sweet so itl be soon then  im ' aiming ' for march to have mine mot'd and on the road
-
im hoping before then but it all depends on time and money, il see what the student loan looks like when i finally get this years lol
mat
-
well this hasnt had an update in a week or two and im ashamed lol
since starting back at uni and doing the last race of the season on the race bike ive had the some total of zero time (and money for that matter) plus still working two jobs to keep a roof over my head so the mk1 has been neglected
So finally got an hour and got most of the interior back in, sorted out a few niggly jobs and realised from driving it just how desperately i need the 20vt in it (hoping to take the engine out of the mk4 tuesday).
Also got hold of my new big brakes, adaptor mounts and braided hoses, just need to get some 280mm discs then these can go on
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o33/minimat1988/photo-47.jpg)
Also managed to give it a bit of a polish although didnt get it all done as im going back to work now
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o33/minimat1988/photo-46.jpg)
mat
-
Looking good. Hey you might not have the engine in yet but if money is tight at least your fuel and insurance costs are friendly for now, have you looked at how much insurance will be with the 20vt in yet?
-
I did
-
Got a day on it yesterday, well on the mk4 anyway. Managed to strip the loom off the engine and removed the dash to get rest of loom out! What an absolute ball ache that turned out to be!!
Anyway should have engine out in next few days also got money to order my mounts now
Mat
-
well this is overdue an update, since ive literally got no time at minute. had to go and drop my bike engine off at the builders aswell (thats not gonna be cheap    )
got a day on it friday and since i may be moving house thought i best crack on and get rid of the mk4, so had to get engine out first and what a ball ache that turned out to be
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o33/minimat1988/photo-48.jpg)
need to know what other bits i may need before it goes tho?? ive got engine box wiring clocks ignition and gear shift out but what else might i need?
thanks
mat
-
Can't think of anything else you'll need off this car but obviously you'll need other bits from elsewhere.
-
Update time and it has both the good and bad bits.
Moved house last week to a new place with a garage and a massive drive so the mk1 can come off the road, also got all my bits from crazyquiffs. So i now have all the mounts and the clutch conversion ready to crack on.
The mk1 has been parked up a couple of month as i dont realy use it especially since its soooo slow and my daily is more comfortable. Then last tuesday the gearbox died on the daily so the mk1 had to be dragged out of hibernation. this could take a while......
, managed to get the mk1 started after copious amounts jump lead action but it will not tick over no matter what!
had a proper look around it and the carb rubber was split, put a new one on still no joy, would run but only with half choke on. Then choke cable snapped which left me under the bonnet everytime i wanted to start it.
took carb off completely stripped it all cleaned all jets out still no joy
came out to it this morning to find the passenger footwell 2 inch deep in water, and 2 inch of snow outside the car. needless to say no amount of cranking in the world was gonna start it and i had to resort to the tram!!
so there you are! cant wait to get my daily back on the road and the mk1 tucked up safely back in garage ready for the transplant, ive been at uni and working 2 jobs so had no time for this but i finsih today for 6 weeks so as soon as the daily is back on the road the mk1 is getting stripped and hopefully will be done by time i go back end of january
mat
-
And there was me thinking youd give up :lipsrsealed:
-
Nah I've not given up just been stupidly short of time, but now I've got a garage il be able to sneak an hour in here and there so shouldn't take me long.
Mat
-
Glad your still cracking in with this :) you got your daily sorted yet?
-
Yep dailys fixed and the golf will be making its way indoors Monday and hopefully il be able to get a few hours on it then.
Watch this space
Mat
-
Good to know man! Loads of pics please
-
Cracking effort man.
-
well heres a long over due update, to the doubters who thought id got rid, no its still sat here lol.
wasnt doing anything with it so half heartadly advertised it, had a bit of interest but didnt really want to sell it. Finally made the decision to pay someone to fit the engine as i literally have zero time at the minute, then atleast i could either enjoy it or flog it finished.
me and a couple mates whipped the old 1.1 out thursday night at midnight when i finished work, to reveal 30 years of grime. i managed to get an hour or two on friday inbeteween finshing one job and starting another so set too with the degreaser and a brush. needless to say it looks loads better (still wont win me many "scene points") but atleast its nicer to work on. also ripped all the interior out to make wiring it easier, carpets seats dash the lot
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o33/minimat1988/photo-56.jpg)
monday its going into the garage for the swap doing, im expecting it to take about a month as there doing it around other jobs. Also got a few trick bits on way so watch this space
plan is to have around the 230-240bhp mark when its done so in 800kg it should be ok.
mat
-
well my front mount turned up yesterday morning and the cars gone into the garage for the swap doing, so watch this space. just need a fuel pump solution and im away
boost anyone
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o33/minimat1988/photo-60.jpg)
mat
-
Jelous....... are you going to be able to snap any shots during the install?
-
Yeah it's gone in my dads garage for the work doing. Il call in every week or so and get some pics.
Mat
-
Picked some 100mm shafts and hubs up tonight so theyve now got all the mechanical bits they need to do the swap.
Il pop down Friday and see if there's any progress
Mat
-
Mat were did you get your intercooler
-
Can't wait to see some engine bay pics dude! You must be well excited!
-
Il take plenty don't worry, trust me I'm more than a little excited!!
The intercooler came of egay, it's a toyo sport kit for a mk4 golf. Obviously it will need some alterations, but the general layout of pipes shouldn't be far off. Plus I won it for £131 brand new!! Some dreamer on here wanted 160 for the same thing second hand!!!!

Collected a MINT late mk2 gti interior on my way to work today, front seats drop straight in, rears are gonna be donors and be used to retrim mk1 seat.
Hit the first of many problems, the 02j box I have has 108 mm drive flanges on it, not 100mm as I need. Does anyone have any ideas what box I need to take the flanges off that will fit my box but are 100mm??

Late 02A have the 100mm flanges with the Allen bolt in the centre like the 108's do, direct swap
-
02a box is what im using on my conversion
-
Thanks for that, next daft question what car came with a o2a? And is it simply a case of undo the bolt up the centre pull one out n slip the other in? Or do you have to rebuild the box?
Thanks for the help.

Mk3 2.0l 16v box i belive.. I bought mine of ebay
-
Seems a waste buying a box just for flanges but I may have to resort to it
-
well i picked up a centre console from a mk2 gti today so that should finish the interior off nicely when its done
also does anyone know if the gearbox from a mk2 16v gti has the correct 100mm drive flanges to swap into a 02j box?

just sold the old 1.1 so thats a few more quid back in the kitty.
ive spoken with the garage today and there hoping to have the mount moved and the engine sat in towards the end of the week

Mat you need mk1 golf cabriotet 100mm drive sharfts
-
yeah ive got some, and hubs complete with new wheel bearings and ball joints
problem is my o2j box has 108mm flanges not 100mm

well i believe the drive flange problem is now sorted, theres a gearbox place local that had them sat on the shelf
legend has it the engine was going in today, so il pop down later and see how thats gone, camera in hand

Been in touch with the garage today and the engine is sat in!! just the hard stuff left to do now lol.
And for anyone thinking of converting a small block to a big block the mounts ARE different despite what some internet based numpties will have you believe. yes you can use the small block mount, but its pikey!

been down and had a look today, got my 280mm brakes and offered them up and they look mahoosive!!!! not even sure if there gonna go behind the wheels
theyve been busy fitting new pedal box and the such, waiting on a couple of bits for the engine then it can go back in for good. then the hard bit starts

Where did you get the wrong info from? I hope it wasn't here, I would have told you that if I'd noticed the question.

What size wheels are you planning to put over the brakes then?

Wasnt on this forum, mainly mk1 golf forum and a local one. You could have used the 1.1 mount, but with over 250 bhp being long term plan it really didn't seam like a worthy risk.
I've got some 15 inch deep dish 5 spokes on it at minute, but when I offered the disk up it pretty much filled the wheel , so il have to see what calliper clearance is like

It'll be tight, I'm running G60 calipers but with mk2 16v discs and pads. If I wanted to fit my 15" RA's over 280mm discs I'd either have to run with 16v pads or space the wheels by at least 3mm. Then you also have to think about wheel weights.

from what i can figure out these are scirocco calipers with braided hoses, adapter brackets and 280mm g60 discs, there big anyways

Engine is now in forever with new cambelt waterpump etc. looks like it should be there!!
Don't get much sump clearance do you

Pop can clearance is alright, however is the car still at standard height at the mo?
-
It's about 30mm drop on springs, as soon as funds permit it will be going on coilovers
-
i reckon i could JUST about get my key under mine ( key on its side ).. shallow sumpo needed aha..
PICTURES  its good to see it in, now for the fun part
-
Yeah mine wasnt "scene" low anyway, still got battery radiator water wiring etc to go in so it's probably gonna go down some more yet.
There on with it as we speak, but I'm stuck for some 100mm drive cups for a 02j box

Do you plan to go any lower?
Stuck with cups? Can't you just go and get complete shafts?
Take Your Pick (http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=mk1+golf+100mm&_sacat=See-All-Categories)

Not planning going any lower tbh. Really don't see the point in building a car with all that power, that I can't drive in anger!! It's being built to be driven!
And I've already bought some 100mm cabby shafts, hubs etc. just need the 100mm flanges for the box. There's some on eBay at minute but there 100 quid which is giddy since you can buy a mk3 box for next to nothing, it's just finding one with the correct 100mm bolt in cups

Good, that's how it should be.
Sorry, obviously wasn't paying attention. yep, some people prices are just
-
Finally got some 100mm drive cups, had to pay toooo much but hey ho!
Also picked up a gti lift pump to go in my tank. Just need an inline Bosch pump to supply the juice
Apparently it's a couple weeks away from being done (read that as months lol)
