Thanks JV!

Welcome to my second project thread.
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=126450.0 – My first project.
So the car... A 2007 Golf GTI. Bought September 2011, traded it in for my old 2004 TDI SE. I was aware, at the time, that it was due a service and some other scheduled work, however wasn’t ready for the massive list of work. Over the past year, I’ve had the following done (mostly via the Volkswagen dealer);

Cam belt (full kit)
Front and rear brake discs and pads, plus brake fluid change
4 new Falken FK-452 tyres, balanced and tracked
New engine cover and air box assembly
Air conditioning pressure switch and gas
Full service + MOT

To follow will be some more detailed posts and some pictures, but wanted to introduce the car to you all now.

Here’s the nice, shiny new brakes;

And the engine bay, all stock;

Project Plans 2015

UPDATED: 2 October 2014

Outstanding jobs from 2014

-   ED30 front splitter
-   Leather arm rest
-   R32 seat wiring
-   Front door speakers + cards
-   Rear audio build
-   WALK
-   Paint restoration

Milltek downpipe & sports cat

I’m not really in the market for a BCS system at this time, as it’ll cost me over double a Milltek system and I’ll see very little difference, in terms of performance gains, between the two systems. If money allowed I’d opt for a full turbo back BCS system of course.
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/MilltekDownpipeampCat_zps7aae8091.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/MilltekDownpipeampCat_zps7aae8091.jpg.html)

4-piston BBK uprade + Audi S3 rears

Most likely fit Audi TTRS front calipers, 340mm J-hook discs, Pagid RS-4 pads, lines and brackets and compliment this with my Audi S3 310mm vented rear discs with calipers, pads and lines. (Aware that the picture below is of stock TTRS 350mm discs)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/AudiTTRSBrakes_zps29a35388.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/AudiTTRSBrakes_zps29a35388.jpg.html)

H&R anti roll bars (front + rear)

To compliment my Bilstien B14 coilovers and further help stiffen up my chassis to help with all round control and performance. In an ideal world, I’d also fit polybushes everywhere along with stiffer engine mounts but it’s unlikely what with budget constraints in 2015. Most likely, my WALK will get fitted at the same time as these.
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/HampRARB_zps91a6a2a8.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/HampRARB_zps91a6a2a8.jpg.html)

The dream list: LSD

I would love to fit an uprated limited slip differential to my gearbox to really help with, well, everything from power delivery to the wheels to the way the car feels in a straight line.
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/LSD_zps85489ba8.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/LSD_zps85489ba8.jpg.html)

The dream list: SRS Tec Golf 6 R bumpers + skirts

Just look at the picture. Imagine it in tornado red. Enough said.

The very first modification I fitted was the K&N Filter. I managed to purchase the item from an eBay company for £15 less than most other online performance shops. So, out came the tools and off came the engine cover…
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0012_zps398f1be1.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0012_zps398f1be1.jpg.html)

So after I took more screws off than I care to remember, plus a heat shield (held on with more screws), it looked like this;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0013_zps6a84012b.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0013_zps6a84012b.jpg.html)

And the new filter in place. It just looks cool;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0015_zps017c0922.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0015_zps017c0922.jpg.html)

I’ve mainly noticed that on the motorway, I now get 3-5 more MPG and the car revs about 200 RPM lower at 70 MPH. This modification will not be replaced unless I ever go to a K04 turbo and other upgrades associated.

Next on list is the R32 rear bumper conversion. This is a more involved stage and requires a fair few Volkswagen parts plus other modifications. No doubt most people reading this know that the exhaust sits differently on the R32 than it does on other Golfs.
I contacted AMD via e-mail asking about fitting of the bumper and additional costs, and was amazed when one of the guys (Ben) replied within a few hours listing the Volkswagen part numbers needed to build the rear bumper assembly! A trip to my local Volkswagen to collect my uncle’s Passat, I spoke to the parts department regarding the parts needed, and got some prices (these are also the Volkswagen part numbers, as provided by AMD);

1K6 807 433 C GRU - Lower half of the bumper which requires painting as it comes in primer - £245
1K6 807 568 9B9 - Black trim that clips into the above item and wraps around the exhaust - £123
1K6 807 441 E 9B9 - Toe eye cover to suit R32 bumper - £5
1K6 945 105 A - n/s reflector - £16.50
1K6 945 106 A - o/s reflector - £16.50

Naturally, some research was on the cards to discover whether there was a way to bring these prices down. I had seen many replica parts on eBay, but one night while trolling through I came across an eBay company;

http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/partsdepot_uk&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSX:SELLERID&_trksid=p3984.m1543.l2533

They sell genuine Volkswagen and Audi parts, as well as a lot of other manufacturer parts, but importantly, they’re cheaper than the main dealer prices. I ordered the lower bumper part that was listed with the part number thinking it had to be too good to be true. But I ate my hat over this one, it turned up 48 hours later and on inspection was full, 100% genuine! Price… £156!

It was like opening up a big early birthday present;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0018_zpsf3204cae.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0018_zpsf3204cae.jpg.html)

And it already has the heat shield mounted in place;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0020_zpsf877d72d.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0020_zpsf877d72d.jpg.html)

So now I’m in the process of getting quotes from some reputable paint shops, so far I’m swinging towards one that AMD recommended me to (which happen to be a sponsor of their BTCC team). It will be a month or so before I can afford to get the bumper sprayed, also got to factor in the other parts that I need so there won’t be a great deal of process over the next few months. But as I get parts, I shall update here.

A small update and sadly no official photos at this time. Today I took a small afternoon drive to a fellow forum member's house to collect a complete set of Volkswagen Golf R front brakes, which came off a 2012 model that had covered 10,000 miles. These include the callipers, brake lines, discs, pads and dust shields; all this for a very reasonable £300! I just need to purchase some carrier bolts for the callipers and possibly, provided I can find spare budget, some stainless steel braided brake lines.

For the sake of pictures (because I like lots of pictures), here's a rough idea of what the finished product may look like;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/BrakesExample_zps0ba7ca54.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/BrakesExample_zps0ba7ca54.jpg.html)

Big shout to user sustanon400 for the set up!

As it’s been a month since I last put anything on here, I thought I would post a little update for those who may be following this. It’s been a mostly quiet month of looking around, seeking information and parts and generally saving money for the exhaust. My first achievement this month came in the form of the R32 rear bumper reflectors, managed to get both from an eBay auction for £8.50 which is half of what one would cost, so another good saving there. However, impatience took hold and I decided to just go ahead an order the lower bumper trim and tow eye cover direct from my local Volkswagen dealer. But despite not saving any money, I’m still happy to report I now have all the parts for the bumper assembly!

So here are some lovely images to enjoy;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Parts_0001_zpsf9b7c6ea.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Parts_0001_zpsf9b7c6ea.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Parts_0002_zpsdc6ae99b.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Parts_0002_zpsdc6ae99b.jpg.html)

This corner of my room is looking rather full;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Parts_0003_zps8682ad27.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Parts_0003_zps8682ad27.jpg.html)

So now the plan is to get the relevant parts colour coded to my car, and then save like a bastard to afford the new Milltek exhaust to be fitted. I’m also planning to have the Forge diverter valve fitted at the same time as it’ll be up on the ramp so logical to have it all done in one hit, although it’ll mean nearly £1,000 in work without even a ECU re-map! Most of this work will not be carried out by myself, I shall hand over my keys to a professional garage to get it done.

I’m also planning some workshop time with a friend who works as a mechanic, and the aim is to fit my front brakes. I’m delaying it slightly as I want to source some stainless steel brake lines to help improve the overall feel of the car. The system needs to be able to cope comfortably with the BHP and torque increase as I have plans to take this car to the track one day…

More updates next month hopefully! Stay tuned, and as always, drop me a message if you like what you see or have a suggestion for me, always happy to hear back from people out there.

I ordered my GFB DV+ the other week and a few days later it arrived.
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DV01_zps896a1e5c.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DV01_zps896a1e5c.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DV02_zps70af75cb.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DV02_zps70af75cb.jpg.html)

The plan for the weekend was set, grab a jack and axle stand, my tool set and a cup of tea and get down to business installing this much needed part.
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DV00_zpsff533dd1.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DV00_zpsff533dd1.jpg.html)

So, getting the diverter valve off… It’s actually a simple enough job, but I managed to drag it out to an hour because I didn’t realise I could have actually used my socket wrench more if I had changed where I was trying to turn it. But off it came none the less, and it was actually in good working order, no rips or damage and everything operated as it should.
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DV03_zps42e5c699.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DV03_zps42e5c699.jpg.html)

Despite this, I went ahead and re-built the unit with my new DV+. Made sure to oil the bits as per the manual and gave the solenoid a bit of a clean-up too while I had it out, not that the pictures show my efforts.
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DV04_zpsfae63dbe.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DV04_zpsfae63dbe.jpg.html)

There’s a noticeable difference to the way the engine pulls through the rev range now, combined with my air filter and some 99 octane fuel, the whole engine runs so smoothly now compared to a year ago when I first drove the car. Has more get-up-and-go to the engine now.

In other news, I’m picking up my R32 bumper from the paint shop tomorrow afternoon, so stay tuned for some pictures again soon!

Well, as promised although a few days later than I said, here's the finished, colour coded R32 bumper;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32Conv1_zps114c7606.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32Conv1_zps114c7606.jpg.html)

Next stop is AMD in Essex to get my new Miltek exhaust and bumper fitted. I may have them re-map it as they run an offer on re-maps bought with exhausts, but I've heard far too many good things about R-Tech to ignore a trip up the M1.

Penciled date for the trip to AMD is 15th November, just in time for my 25th birthday! :laugh:

Further to my last post, I have also replaced the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) cam follower as I read a lot about how this little £30 part can causes thousands of pounds worth of damage to the HPFP and cams if it wears through and fails. For anyone who has an engine with this part, make sure you learn about it, check it and replace it if necessary as the grief it'll save is well worth the 30 minutes labour on the driveway.

I found the genuine part on eBay for £32 delivered so bought it ready for the weekend just gone and made it a priority job. The Volkswagen part number is 06D 109 309 C for those who have a GTI like myself, can't be sure if this is the same for other VAG cars. I also used the DIY guide below, loaded it up on my tablet and it made the job as simple as it could be.

http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102858

So to highlight how worn my actually was, here's a nice edited before and after. There's no messing with light levels or colours, that's how my phone captured the images from 2 different angles. As it shows, it's worn to the recommended point of being changed. At this point, my engine had done 83,000 miles so it was well overdue a refresh.
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/CamFollower_zps9ccf955c.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/CamFollower_zps9ccf955c.jpg.html)

Next on the list will be an OEM PCV replacement to the latest revision (E) along with a final check and possible oil change before the re-map and new exhaust. There's also a chance I may have acquired another nice little treat for my Golf so stay tuned!

Well, it is done... I can only sum up the effect of stage one tuning in this way;

WEEE!

After an initial scare with a fuelling issue, the car was put through it's paces and is now waiting a mini photo shoot tomorrow and then a post to be written up about the evens of this weekend. Hoping to have a video of the exhaust for your viewing pleasure as well, so hang tight for that.

For now, I shall be off racking some miles up to bed in my new exhaust.
Title: Re: MikeMaher205 - '07 GTI
Post by: th3_f15t on 17 November 2013, 20:45
So Friday was D-day for stage 1. Booked into AMD Tuning and took it in the morning, handing over the keys and headed off for a fry up. Came back to grab a quick picture of it on the lift, not a great picture but better than nothing!

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/AMD_01_zps59c9d058.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/AMD_01_zps59c9d058.jpg.html)

So as you will probably know by now, I was having a Miltek cat-back non-resonated system installed along with the rear bumper to compliment the R32 rear silencer. I also had it booked in for a remap, and I’m aware I said I would go to R-Tech (based on tons of positive feedback from other users) but it was cheaper and easier to get it done all in one day.

For note, AMD currently offer 50% off remaps when bought with Miltek exhaust systems! So £250 instead of £500… Love a bargain!

Things didn’t go smoothly though at AMD…

They ran their full diagnostics before the remapped it and came up into the waiting room to tell me that there was an error for low pressure in the fuelling! Panic stricken is a fairly accurate way to describe the internal meltdown I started having. The technician said it could be two things, either incorrect fuel filter or the cam follower on the high pressure fuel pump. So imagine my joy when I remembered I’d replaced said cam follower not two weeks prior (to avoid this very problem)! So after a short while I got my first chance to hear my new, shiny exhaust as it sang on the rollers!

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/AMD_02_zpsed9700df.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/AMD_02_zpsed9700df.jpg.html)

I asked the guys to let me have the old filter, and when they inspected it more closely they revealed it was not just the wrong filter (incidentally, it was for a 2.0 FSI engine, I think, whatever it was it was only providing half the fuel it should have been!) but it wasn’t a genuine Volkswagen part, which the garage that did the service had led me to believe the parts would be. Driving home in a rage when you have just had a remap isn’t advisable. I did manage to get my money back from the garage for the part at least, but certainly not going to use them again!

Oh, numbers! Well…
199.9 BHP and 234.7 lb/ft Tourque @ 2777 RPM before the remap
265.9 BHP and 304.6 lb/ft Tourque @ 3157 RPM after the remap

That works out as a 33% increase in BHP and 35% in tourque! Certainly shifts now at in any gear but sadly, I fear the brakes won’t like being punished with the new power so the upgrade is being bought forward to before Christmas (exact date TBC at this time)

AMD kindly parked the car right outside the front door for me to allow a brilliant shot of the car! Shame it was dirty…

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/AMD_03_zps42c8d433.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/AMD_03_zps42c8d433.jpg.html)

So all in all, a pretty decent way to celebrate my 25th birthday I feel! I had the intension to get the car cleaned and do some more shots today, but sadly discovered a screw in my rear tyre and none of the tyre shops open near me had a Falken FK-452 in stock so it was called off and left at home (had to get the train back to base in London!)

I leave you to enjoy a few (attempts at) artistic shots of my car. For now, I’m waiting for funds to allow for some stainless steel brake lines and some rear brakes from a Golf R (to match my fronts!). Feedback for taking shots is requested from anyone who does it for a proper hobby or career!

Well, in keeping with the monthly updates, I’m trying to pull together some exciting news on the project and sadly I have nothing to report that will be of much interest. First off, the rear tyre didn’t need replacing as the screw didn’t do any serious damage and the tyre has kept its air and seems good (even after some road testing), which is hand as the Falken FK-452 is no longer produced, replaced by the FK-453 now so in the event of a tyre going, it’s a minimum of 2 now as I won’t run mismatched on the same axel at least.

Apart from that, I’ve finally ordered my Hel SS brake lines for the front brakes, but the acquisition of rear Golf R brakes (to match my front) hasn’t come about just yet, so leaving the rears alone for the short term. Also bought some genuine Volkswagen brake fluid as I’ll only want to top up any fluid lost rather than replace the lot (which if you remember, is less than 1 year old at this point in time) and I don’t like to re-use fluid that’s been bled out as it could pick up contaminants once out the braking system.

Lastly, I’ve gone and bought lowering springs. APR currently have a deal on till the end of December on the VW Racing springs (which, if I’m correct, are made by Eibach to VW Racing specs) which normally retail for £210 but with £30 off, this bought them down to the price of other recommended springs and I’ve liked what I’ve read about the VW Racing ones, so in the shopping basket they went.

Enough text, picture time.

So all I have to do now is find a time (and friend) to help me fit all of the outstanding modifications to the car now. This is still TBC… Annoyingly.

Time for a January 2014 update I think! Sad to say, there’s not an awful lot of bits added to the car. In fact, nothing has been added to the car physically but the corner of my room and the bench in my garage are becoming full again.

So, before I begin, a couple of pictures of the “Veedub Family” that I have got going locally. There’s my Golf, my friend’s Fox and his neighbour’s Rocco R. There is a reason I included these pictures;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/VWFamily01_zpse17cadc9.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/VWFamily01_zpse17cadc9.jpg.html)

If I’m honest, in the future when I have money to waste (i.e. within the confide of my dreams), I would like to re-spray my Golf in the green here;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/VWFamily02_zps20d788ab.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/VWFamily02_zps20d788ab.jpg.html)

But for now, I’m happy with my tornado red. So happy I bought this as a pre-Christmas treat;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Meguiars_zpse80dc66b.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Meguiars_zpse80dc66b.jpg.html)

10 hours of my life over 2 days on the paintwork. But even I have to admit that the hype behind Meguiar’s products is true, the difference in the paint is amazing. And a proper wax makes all the difference to long term care, the dirt doesn’t cling on now so as soon as it rains it washes itself. I like that in a car.

Another pre-Christmas present was in the form of a cheap deal on another forum, the item in question: a Volkswagen approved Kenwood DNX512DAB DNX520VBT stereo upgrade. About £850 new, or nearer to the four figure number from a Volkswagen dealer, but I bagged this unit for a tasty £450, minus box and manuals (but who needs those anyway?)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Kenwood_Stereo_zps50cc7a1e.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Kenwood_Stereo_zps50cc7a1e.jpg.html)

Sadly, it won’t be installed for a while as I will need to upgrade both my speakers and my aerial, for my current one doesn’t know how to pick up digital radio and the speakers will sound pants due to the way they work with the standard stereo.

Another forum spot came in the way of Hurdy. After a message about a carbon fibre bonnet he has picked up, he directed me in the way of a company in Kent that has some carbon fibre parts just sat about from when they took over the unit they occupy. A quick look on their Facebook page revealed they had some Mk5 parts and I happened to notice a front splitter. Called them up and the man who runs the business asked for £80 for it. Needless to say, I was quickly in the car with cash in hand and driving down the M20 to find the place.
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/CF_Splitter_01_zpsaba2893b.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/CF_Splitter_01_zpsaba2893b.jpg.html)

Both Hurdy and I suspect that these parts are made by Seibon, but there’s no branding or paperwork to confirm. However, if all the parts are Seibon parts, I bagged a £370 splitter for just £80. See what you think for yourself;
http://seiboncarbon.co.uk/products/tt-style-carbon-fiber-front-lip-for-2006-2007-volkswagen-golf-gti.html

Was ironically looking at those parts before I spotted this deal, so it’s nice to see that fate has decided my plan for splitter, grill, bonnet and wings should be so.

Final purchase before Christmas (although sadly not delivered till much time after) was a set of 2008 Golf R32 rear brakes.

Calipers;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_01_zpsd8eefcd5.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_01_zpsd8eefcd5.jpg.html)

Dust shields;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_02_zpsd8753712.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_02_zpsd8753712.jpg.html)

Discs;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_03_zps4e7dabe9.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_03_zps4e7dabe9.jpg.html)

It looks as if the setup has been sat around in a scrap yard for a fair while, but to me, the most important part where the calipers which look to be in very good condition. Sadly, I think the pads will need replacing but the discs look usable for short term anyway. The dust shields look a little damaged, but if it’s just superficial scratches then I’m not concerned as I have a plan.

The calipers themselves are going to be stripped and sent for powder coating to match my front Golf R calipers which are a gloss black. But I think I may do the dust shields in a shade of red as close to my car as possible, just to shake things up a bit. Also need to obtain rear stainless steel brake lines, possibly new brake pads already (just to be safe, don’t like to take too many risks with safety items) and find time, space and help to fit the brakes really soon. I may go ahead with the fronts separately to the rears but it depends on timing right now.

So that’s it for now, another essay for you all to read on a Saturday night. I have a bottle of Southern Comfort that needs my attention, so good evening for now.

Well, two updates in a month now, it appears I’m getting my arse into gear. I got bored and wandered into my garage, which usually ends up with something being taken apart and/or broken. Which it did. Again.

I decided to start prep’ing my rear brake calipers ready to be sent into the powder coaters so I can get them done in a gloss black to match my fronts. I also plan to powder coat the dust shields, both front and rear, in a gloss red that matches the colour of my car. Was tempted to do a silver/black combo on the rear calipers to really go mad but thought it may end up over the top, but opinions welcome!

Anyway, I began with it looking like this;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_04_zps30bb683f.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_04_zps30bb683f.jpg.html)

Pads don’t look horrific now they’re out, plenty of life left and they’re Pagid pads which, while not a performance pad, are still quite good for my needs. Again, whether I use them or swap them for some ATE or performance pads remains undecided.

So, off come the carriers and the pins;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_05_zpsf9825ebe.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_05_zpsf9825ebe.jpg.html)

After a few hours of working out how to undo seized on bleed nipples and lines without damaging them, and a lot of cleaning, I had them like this;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_06_zps41fadb2c.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_06_zps41fadb2c.jpg.html)

The second caliper was dismantled in less than 15 minutes, getting quite good at taking things apart. Not so good at putting things back together though. Upon laying everything out and doing a stock check, I realised that the seller forgot to pack the brake lines! It’s a good job I planned to upgrade to stainless steel lines anyway, but still a bit annoyed. Also discovered one of the little clips that sit on the carrier to secure the pads is missing, so hoping to try and find one if they’re really needed. For reference, they’re the U shaped bits of metal just to the left and below the brake pads in the above image.

Another reason I’d planned to re-colour the calipers the whole time;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_07_zps85f23825.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_07_zps85f23825.jpg.html)

Most of the original blue has just flaked off. The caliper on the left is lucky if it has 20% of the original blue left on it. Tried a bit of paint thinner to remove the last but they will need to be shot blasted to get them fully prep’d for painting. Still deciding whether to paint them myself or powder coat them. But for now, it’s a case of getting a new seal kit as the current ones feel brittle and could do with replacing, along with the pad clips and lines. Also need to get a professional mechanic to look over my discs and pads to see if they’ll be OK for use after a bit of a clean-up.

That’s all for now, more to come soon though. I’m getting a shift on with the brakes, due to some hairy moment where I had a good look into a field.

Well, February is upon us, so I feel it’s once again time to update this project. And this time, no new parts have been bought but outstanding parts have been fitted. Also bought some new tools, a VW oil filter housing draining tool and a set of VW coil pack removal tools.

This makes the job so much easier and less messy;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/OilChange_zpsea2473ef.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/OilChange_zpsea2473ef.jpg.html)

Changed the oil as I’ve done 85K miles and I want to re-do the service the previous garage did as they are retards and did it wrong. See my previous post about my day in AmD. Although they did manage to fit NGK spark plugs correctly, so 1 out of 4 parts replaced was done correctly. Yet to replace the pollen filter, but it’s low down the list of priorities. My brakes are making that “pads wearing out, so we’ll eat your discs” noise again. It’s only been about 12K miles!

Anyway, time for the stereo update! Before I being, I should like to point out that it’s always important to check the item you’re buying when meeting some random person is actually what they have advertised. This is something I failed to do, with regards to my stereo. I originally thought I’d bought a Kenwood DNX512DAB (indeed, the advert listed it as this) but only today, months on, did I discover that the model I own is a DNX520VBT. The only real difference is lack of DAB radio, and considering I don’t really listen to much radio, I wasn’t too annoyed. However, if I ever find the lying little scum back in London somewhere, I shall brake his hands…

Enough hate talk, time for pictures! Started by moving to a nice, sunny spot and broke out the tools;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Stereo01_zpscc6e3488.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Stereo01_zpscc6e3488.jpg.html)

I discovered that the aerial didn’t seem to be connected properly, noticed this;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Stereo04_zps0df98da2.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Stereo04_zps0df98da2.jpg.html)

Quick look at the wiring harness for the stereo, found a blue wire which I though was power into the unit, so stuffed the exposed copper inside, taped it down and cable tied it all together for extra comfort, and I have radio. Front facing AUX/USB as well as built in navigation are all great things, haven’t tested it with my iPod yet, but I hate my iPod anyway.

The only issue is where I removed a wire to the airbag light, I think it’s tripped the ECU into thinking there’s an airbag fault. Certainly, it beeps at me and leaves the airbag light on the dash illuminated. My rules have always been if airbag check fails, the car doesn’t go anywhere except to the garage to get fixed. A trip to VW during the week for an inspection may be on the cards.

But the finished product;

So, time for another update and this one is part one of #insert number here#. Sadly, it’s not been good news this month in terms of progress. For anyone following the project, you may recall that back in September 2013 I purchased a cheap set of Mk6 Golf R20 front brakes. Well, 7 months on and I finally decided that having them sat in my room wasn’t practical any longer and made an effort to begin the process of fitting them. I even purchased a brake bleeding tool to help the process, more on that later.

So, the weekend rolled round, the weather was good and the driveway and garage was booked. Out came the tools, on came the overalls and so began the list of problems…

Up to here, everything went well. From here… Not so good;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20140308_102359_zps842d916b.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20140308_102359_zps842d916b.jpg.html)

Fitting the parts was really quite straight forward, except for the stainless steel brake lines. The problem was that due to the bolts in my kit not being the correct type, I had no way of attaching them to the caliper. This lead to having to use the stock ones that came with my kit, as well as routing the cable between the driveshaft and the wishbone, far from ideal and in no way a permanent fix. You can see the problem below;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20140308_091540_zps86e9e776.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20140308_091540_zps86e9e776.jpg.html)

A quick e-mail to HEL, who’s very friendly customer support pointed me in the direction of where to get the correct banjo bolts and also acquired some fresh hose securing clips because I think I lost the original ones in the process.

So, aside from those bolts not fitting, everything else bolted on and connected up like the theory said it should of. As a side note, when people say you need 18” alloys minimum, they really do mean absolute minimum! No photos at this time but trust me, they’re bloody big. Anyway, once the dust shields, discs and calipers with pads were all bolted up, time to bleed the system. We connected up my new bleed tool to the air supply, connected it to the bleed nipple, opened it up and became bleeding… A long while later a small amount of fluid go through. After about an hour or bleeding (using both the tools and a manual approach), time came to fire up the ignition and check the brakes with the engine on. Disaster struck again, as soon as the servo kicked in, it passed the air that was left in the system all round, resulting in no brakes at all. I pumped the pedal and built up a little pressure (enough to limp it to a proper garage perhaps) but as soon as the clutch is depressed, it loses everything and you can push the brake pedal to the floor. On top of this, the brake pad wear sensor wasn’t bridged (I thought it didn’t need to be) so my warning message for checking pads came on. I also think I failed to reconnect the passenger side ABS senor, so now I have lights on my dash for;

- Airbag
- ABS
- Tyre Pressure
- Warning Messages

Basically, if you’ve been to a sea side town at Christmas and seen the light displays, you have some idea of what sitting in my driver’s seat is like. To say I was gutted was an understatement. As it stands, I will now try and get the car drivable enough to take it into AMD to have the rest of the work done, which currently stands at;

-   Front brake pads (with wear sensors) replaced / Bridge sensor
-   Front stainless steel lines fitted
-   Rear brake conversion (to R32 setup – see below)
-   Full brake fluid renewal + power bleed
-   Health check and errors cleared

To finish the R32 rear conversion, I still need to powder coat my calipers, replace the seals, acquire new pads, discs and dust shields, then re-build the calipers and then get it all to AMD. Big jobs on now so hopefully another big update soon, with pretty pictures of a car with working brakes. I've decided to cheat and duck out of finishing this myself, as I'd prefer to just get the car back on the road. It looks like at least a month before I can get this all sorted out. Stay tuned.

Time for some more pictures and words about how I’ve achieved nothing with the car over the last month. So to start, I’ve got the first official picture of the (long awaited) Golf R20 front brakes installed!

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Brakes_00_zps138583cc.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Brakes_00_zps138583cc.jpg.html)

I endeavour to get some much better picture once the cars all up and running again, which is still TBC at the time of writing this. Next up, finally got some nice new alloys cheap.

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/BBS_CH_01_zps8a12ebff.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/BBS_CH_01_zps8a12ebff.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/BBS_CH_02_zpsc5b3ae8b.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/BBS_CH_02_zpsc5b3ae8b.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/BBS_CH_03_zpsb65db9a6.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/BBS_CH_03_zpsb65db9a6.jpg.html)

Bagged these for a tidy sum of £450, few scratches but nothing a refurbishment won’t cure. Going to get them powder coated, but as for colour, I’m swinging towards a gun metal grey at this moment in time, but like everything that’ll be subject to (a lot of) change. On the subject of powder coating things;

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_09_zps6b6f11f0.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_09_zps6b6f11f0.jpg.html)

They came up pretty well considering how corroded the calipers were in the first place. The inside finish is a little off in my opinion but considering it’ll never be seen, I can forgive them. The parts on display are finished to a high standard though, and it’s on there pretty well so fairly pleased. Got the hand brake part of the calipers sorted and starting rebuilding them but ran out of time this weekend;

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_10_zps0d3d70c4.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_10_zps0d3d70c4.jpg.html)

Next step is to get the calipers rebuilt fully, stainless steel brake lines ordered, some new pad retaining clip things as I’m missing one from the original set and clean up the discs. Just to ensure that everything is lovely and all that jazz when I finally get her back on the road, I decided it best to get some decent pads;

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Brakes_01_zps63b50045.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Brakes_01_zps63b50045.jpg.html)

So perhaps not a total wasted month but certainly not moving as quickly as I’d like at this time. Spending the day at Early Edition today also has spurred me onto sorting my s**t out and getting it together (literally). More to follow (soon) (hopefully)…

Slow and steady progress again, but pleased to report that the rear calipers are now fully back together (respectively) and discs have been cleaned up, HEL lines ordered and everything placed ready for the trip to AmD.

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_11_zpsb00ffbcb.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/R32_Rear_Brakes_11_zpsb00ffbcb.jpg.html)

Going to bring the day at AmD forward to this coming Monday/Tuesday, can’t be dealing with a week off and no car so bringing it forwards. I think it’s nearly two months since I last properly drove her beyond my driveway!

And also accidently got lost, went to ask for directions and wound up with these;

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Spray_01_zps929c710d.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Spray_01_zps929c710d.jpg.html)

More on that later…

Finally, Evie is back on the road with working brakes. 2 months after beginning, it’s done, front brakes are on and working a treat. Still in the wearing-in phase, but I’ve already noticed that there’s a lot less pedal pressing for stopping the car, what used to be a firm press on the pedal is now a gentle touch. Yet to do an emergency stop to really see how they handle.

So, going back in time a little, this is how my heads up display looked prior to this weekend;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/HUD_Southend_Lights_zpsc3ea9258.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/HUD_Southend_Lights_zpsc3ea9258.jpg.html)

Ever been Southend sea front at Christmas? Reminds me of that. Loaded up the boot with the rear R32 brakes in preparation for my tow to AmD;

Thursday rolls round, time to put her on the back of a flat bed. Feels like admitting defeat, or that hung-over walk of shame the morning after…

Early start on the Friday, get to AmD for about 10am, spend a lot of time waiting to get a phone call saying the rear brakes didn’t fit correctly. Was a little bemused, but transpired they meant my rear dust shields didn’t fit as they’re for a mk6 Golf R which has a different axle shape so they're not backwards compatible. Not the end of the world running without them but still slightly annoyed.

Many, many hours later, the guys pop up to the waiting room and tell me there’s another problem with the rear brakes. The passenger side caliper was just losing all the fluid in a rather bad manor where the brake hose meets the caliper, looks like I’d cross-threaded the bolt as I screwed it in so fluid was just flowing out, even at normal pressure. Result: new caliper needed, along with new hose mountings (solid lines that then attach to stainless steel lines). So they didn’t end up going on and I had to get my stock rears re-fitted. Devastated.

Also found the reason my brake pedal was just sinking to the floor even though there was no apparent air in the system after several bleeding cycles. I’d somehow managed to fit the front calipers upside down (effectively swapped the sides over). So because the bleed nipple was at the bottom, all the air was trapped in the top of the caliper. Felt like a massive c*** in AmD, decided there and then to give my tools away and give up doing things myself for the sake of further embarrassment! Credit to the guys there, they were really good about it and told me of some worse case situations they’ve had to fix to cheer me up.

But anyway, enough stupidity, I shall bring a small update and some better pictures in a few weeks when my new camera tripod arrives (it is a small one mind so no high up pictures!).

A small update and not an awful lot of progression forwards. The alloys are back from the powder coaters, they look pretty smart but yet to get tyres fitted and them prep’d for fitting to the car. No photos as of yet, but expect some soon enough. Looking into applying some good quality wheel wax to protect these rims for life, as well as investing in some brand new locking wheel nuts and centre caps to finish off the look nicely.

I managed to find a JOM badge-less grill on eBay going for £55, but sadly when it arrived it was damaged;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Grill_01_zpsf85d6fce.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Grill_01_zpsf85d6fce.jpg.html)

A quick message to the eBay seller and they said they will replace it as soon as more came into stock, and I shouldn’t need to ship the old one back to them, so potential repair and sell it on cheap I reckon. Need to now look into the best way to secure a front number plate using magnets.

Also worth a mention is the engine bay. Bought myself a black coolant cap and washer bottle cap, a Porsche 911 oil cap and this little bit of bling for a tidy price of £67;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Intake_zpsb673d438.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Intake_zpsb673d438.jpg.html)

Decided to treat myself, and the car, to a bit of eye candy;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Engine_Bay_02_zps90612c5b.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Engine_Bay_02_zps90612c5b.jpg.html)

Also attended the Lakeside meet this Sunday just gone (25th May) and was a great turn out, lovely weather and got my hands on VCDS to clear my airbag light and lots of other error codes too. Shout out to whoever it was who gave me their laptop, give me a message so I can edit this line with your username! (I’m useless with names.) And yes, I’m proud of my wing mirror stickers;

Next month I hope to fit the grill, alloys, colour code my splitter and side skirts, gloss black my rear valance and maybe soon source a GTI leather interior. Stand by for updates.

A good weekend, plenty of sunlight and a small, but in itself massive update. Alloys are all fitted and look much better than I first though they would. My girlfriend and I both agree that colour coding the side skirts wouldn’t suit as much as leaving the trim black, so I think it’ll stay as it is on the sides, perhaps a gloss black but yet to decide. Opinions are very welcome in terms of colour coding options. Feel free to PM me! Also gave her a much overdue scrub and polish, managed to remove a lot of the concrete damage from my work’s car park but still a bit more restoration required.

Another update for you all. Remember the broken badge-less grill I got? That has been replaced and I got to keep the broken one, so had a go at using some of this on it;

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/FibreGlass01_zpsdab84a1c.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/FibreGlass01_zpsdab84a1c.jpg.html)

Taped up the crack to hold it together while I fibre glassed it together;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/FibreGlass02_zpse96fc091.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/FibreGlass02_zpse96fc091.jpg.html)

It’s held together pretty strong, however I didn’t get it quite perfect and think it’s beyond much help;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/FibreGlass05_zps1437f919.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/FibreGlass05_zps1437f919.jpg.html)

Going to offer it up and see how it fits, if it’ll go into a grill then I’ll look at using some filler on it and re-spraying it then donating it to my girlfriend’s GTI. If it fails, it’s a good bit of practise I guess as didn’t cost me anything and better to mess this up than something I really need.

This weekend was Essex Vee Dubber’s annual show at Battlesbridge in Essex, so me and the girlfriend took a trip there on the Saturday. It’s mostly a bugs and buses club but a few water cooled cars out on parade, some pictures of are below. We then discovered that there was a show and shine on the Sunday, and after a little chill out at home, the words “let’s do the show and shine tomorrow. I’ll get the bucket” were uttered, and my our Saturday night turned into this;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/ShowNShine01_zps4a6d819c.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/ShowNShine01_zps4a6d819c.jpg.html)#

Bit of hot soapy to de-grease my plastic trim bits, and a lot of scrubbing later;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/ShowNShine03_zps724e97fd.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/ShowNShine03_zps724e97fd.jpg.html)

Only got the interior done in the evening, we woke up early to prep the cars Sunday morning, then finished off with a final polish at the show;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/ShowNShine04_zpsbdb71254.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/ShowNShine04_zpsbdb71254.jpg.html)

Didn’t win s**t but a good weekend out none the less.

So anyway, actual updates… Well I’m picking up a full leather interior next Saturday, got a leather armrest on order which is fully refurbished. Also got some shiny bits coming too, for some added bling. I’m buying a second steering wheel and that’ll go off soon to be customised, once I’ve finished drawing up my designs. I reckon some new rear speakers will get chucked in as well, once I can dig out a good guide but think it may be a case of driving around with interior parts missing for a few weeks while I sort it all out! If anyone has a good guide for rear speaker replacement in a 3 door, I’ll owe you a beer.

In other developments, bored of my 345mm brakes already, looking towards an upgrade to 4 piston Porsche brakes in the next year or two, after some other bits. Also going to try and source some Eibach or Koni coilovers on the cheap to sort out the ride height and handling, liking the sound of Koni more as they offer a softer ride and seeing as I’m not much more than a fast road user, seems perfect for my needs, but more research is required.

Been looking into getting a BCS Power Valve full exhaust system too, again in a few months I may look to getting one and officially going Stage 2. Yet to be justified but getting there. Sent off some e-mails for quotes on re-spray jobs too, nothing back yet sadly.

Other than that, nothing much going on. Selling off parts as I’m a bit homeless and don’t want to be storing stuff in my room at work so keep an eye on the classifieds! That’s all for now, enjoy.

Interior Rebuild Part 1

Seeing as this is going to be a mini-build thread on it's own, it gets a proper title and everything. Part one mostly involves actually picking up the bits I need and learning how to do the jobs ahead.

Firstly, I needed to make room as hiring a van was ridiculously expensive. Ripped the back seats out to make space;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_01_zps8055bd1c.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_01_zps8055bd1c.jpg.html)

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_03_zpsb0441e44.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_03_zpsb0441e44.jpg.html)

Didn't have an M10 spline bit so couldn't remove the 2/3 back rest. Took a trip to meet a fellow forum member (mk_boy85) to pick up a full leather interior and new steering wheel and airbag. Luckily for me we had to take his car apart to get the panels off so I've learnt how to strip most of my interior in preparation for the rebuild.

All loaded up;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_05_zps672026c4.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_05_zps672026c4.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_06_zps7ffefb71.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_06_zps7ffefb71.jpg.html)

We met at AKS Tuning, and had a chat with Alex. He's a natural salesman, looks like all my chassis work will be going to him end of the year! H&R coilovers and anti roll bars, plus some engine mounts and bushes I reckon. Plus a TTRS brake upgrade. :evil:

Next phase is to clean everything up and make it look factory fresh, along with sourcing some new audio all round. Thinking of wiring the rear speaks to a multi-channel amp so they can get some extra power to them and the option of running a sub at a later date is then there. Front audio might wait a bit loner as it's far easier to do than the rear set up. Also going to look at putting extra sound dampening in the new door cars to help comfort and aid audio.

First though, MOT is due so no new mods until it's all done and then insurance (yes, we mustn't forget the legal side to all this).

Had AmD Tuning fit a set of Bilstein B14 coilovers and the ECS Tuning top mount kit (which is really just Audi TTS/RS3 top mounts up front and OEM rear top mounts). My short review of the kits combined is that the car drives better than stock along the motorway and around corners it’s on another world. Obviously I can’t compare the kit fairly at this time for two reason, firstly I’ve only just fitted it so honeymoon stage isn’t over and it’s still bedding in and secondly this is the first time I’ve ever run coilovers so I’m going to be bias towards them. But as a sub £1000 (well nearly!) investment, it’s well worth it.

Also decided to begin the exterior cosmetic upgrades by fitting my JOM de-badged front grill with accompanying pressed plate on magnets. Also run pressed plates out back with an ABT surround, will need to sort it before I take any pictures though as it’s off to one side and bugs the hell out of me. Can’t put imperfect pictures up online, would be shameful. The magnet mod for the plate works a treat, £15 of parts all in (magnets, felt, super glue and some gorilla tape) and it’s certainly changed the front end. However now I’m not sure I like my alloy style with the front, it’s a clash of euro style with motor sport theme in my eyes and I’m unsure on it. Already looking at swapping alloys to something like BBS LM (well, reps as I’m poor) or the new Wolfrace Roadster (yet to be put on sale). Also going to fit my Edition 30 front splitter before making a real decision on wheels.

Picture time…

After some messing about on image editing software...

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Lowered04_zps50d9b13a.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Lowered04_zps50d9b13a.jpg.html)

Currently sat at the highest setting, 30mm drop over stock. Will let the dampers bed in a bit and see how she handles around my local proving ground before adjusting the height a bit. May drop a further 5-10mm but I don’t like it when I can’t see the top of the tyre in the arch.

My second GTI steering wheel is off to the trimmers to get done up, will post pictures of when it’s back and then fitted in the car. Next month will be leather interior upgrade time along with a full audio upgrade. Running all the speakers off of an external amp as my Kenwood head unit is, frankly, pants. I may try and begin sorting my ED30 splitter too but that’s a low priority right now, need to sort my interior as I’m fed up of not having a room at work to live in! Crap corner is back with a vengeance…

Just to add, I also fitted an Edition 30 gear knob and gaiter:

While I've been bored, I've mocked up some simulations of future alloys from my car. Tell me what you think...

Interior Rebuild Part 2

Today has been a day of challenges. Not quite sure why I ever thought stripping my interior would be a good idea, but went ahead anyway. Firstly, I had to drive back to London to grab some of the interior as it’s stored over two locations, and began gathering all the tools I’ll need.

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_01_zps74242db2.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_01_zps74242db2.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_02_zps416c515e.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_02_zps416c515e.jpg.html)

The next morning, work began. Stripped the rear seats in London and grabbed my new leather ones, but still had to get the rear quarter panels out.

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_03_zps66d49d0e.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_03_zps66d49d0e.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_04_zps2a050543.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_04_zps2a050543.jpg.html)

Health and safety, the bloody pop-in rivets that VW use were flying at me so feared for my eyes. Got the rear panels out and decided to adapt a guide I’ve read, that was created by SI-R32. He mentioned about drilling the rivets out in the car, but I decided to unbolt the plastic housing and remove it from the car completely.

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_11_zps1dcbca96.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_11_zps1dcbca96.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_12_zps7096cdc9.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_12_zps7096cdc9.jpg.html) (http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_05_zps6f46544b.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_05_zps6f46544b.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_06_zps8c0c6a1e.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_06_zps8c0c6a1e.jpg.html)

Drilled the old rivets out a bit, then just pulled it through. Lined up my new speaker, drilled new holes in the panel and riveted it back in, as well as using some bond to hold it in securely and absorb vibrations.

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_07_zps92f81294.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_07_zps92f81294.jpg.html)

Used a Stanley knife to cut out the original tweeter, then used more bond to secure the new ones.

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_09_zps7c231397.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_09_zps7c231397.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_10_zps48d504e9.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_10_zps48d504e9.jpg.html)

Left it all to dry for a few hours, sorted out the wiring a bit. Use Velcro to hold the cross over box on, so I can pull it off when I attach the rear panels again and wire up the tweeter.

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_13_zps5e414d58.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_13_zps5e414d58.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_13_zps5e414d58.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_13_zps5e414d58.jpg.html)

Over the next few days I'll wire in the amp, fit the front speakers, connect the speakers to the amp, test it all and then re-build the panels and door cards, then fit the new leather seats. Only a few hours I reckon... :whistle:

Day two, mostly wiring up and trying to get things to the stage of putting it back together. Some pictures first:

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_14_zpseec7fb6c.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_14_zpseec7fb6c.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_15_zpsfa46d08b.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_15_zpsfa46d08b.jpg.html)

Now the usual guides say to run the RCA cables on the opposite side of the car from the power cable, but I couldn’t be bothered with that. I just moved the power cable a few inches away from the RCA cable to avoid interference.

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_16_zps092250bc.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_16_zps092250bc.jpg.html)

Wired it up and ran an initial test, it worked which was a relief! Started putting things back together:

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_17_zpsb885f1bb.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_17_zpsb885f1bb.jpg.html)

I may have injured my thumb with a Stanley knife, hence the tissue and tape bandage…

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_21_zps2e74788e.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_21_zps2e74788e.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_22_zpsf0262435.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_22_zpsf0262435.jpg.html)

The driver’s side panel is on, ran another test before clamping it back down and everything worked, just got to re-fit the passenger side and all the trim, then the seats, secure the amp to the back of the seats, neaten up the wiring and then clean up. One more day I reckon.

Right, so this is my third and final day of working on the car, giving it a break after this as I need to focus on my uni work otherwise I’ll mess up my exams next month. So I got out early this morning and attacked the final stages and final rebuild of the rear part of my car.

Holding my amp on with Velcro, so it’s easily taken off for maintenance or replacement, which it may well be very soon as it now wants to blow all the fuses every time I connect the earth lead to the damn thing. 6 fuses later and I think I may disconnect the battery and wire it up then re-connect the battery to see if that gets round the problem. Can’t understand this as it was fine during testing, fear something’s gone a bit amiss inside now it’s mounted up.

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_23_zpsacaba2dd.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_23_zpsacaba2dd.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_24_zps803d5e14.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_24_zps803d5e14.jpg.html)

Partially done:
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_25_zps9b6e2fac.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_25_zps9b6e2fac.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_26_zps9062d308.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Interior_26_zps9062d308.jpg.html)

That’s how it sits at the moment, need to get it all working before I do anything else. Some research is needed and yet more fuses, when my local Halfords re-stock them.

So now I have a half leather interior. By this I mean the rear is leather, the front is not. I plan to swap the front seats and armrest over another weekend, with door cards and speakers probably being done end of September before I go away for two months. Also, I shall begin organising my cloth GTI interior for sale, too early for a price and definite date of availability yet but if you’re thinking of getting one for your own VW, let me know.

Being a weather man by trade, and a lover of Golfs, the opportunity to get a snap of both popped up yesterday...

Taken on my mobile phone, not too bad considering.

A small pre-September update to share while I prepare for the final interior upgrade. Firstly, my amp was sent back for testing but returned as working perfectly so need to double check my earth lead and other wiring. Secondly, I have my replacement steering wheel back from the re-trimmer's;

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/SteeringWheel_zpsd8757fdb.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/SteeringWheel_zpsd8757fdb.jpg.html)

And also picking up these on Monday;

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Recaros_zpsb4a8756b.jpeg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Recaros_zpsb4a8756b.jpeg.html)

Genuine R32 leather Recaro front seats, for a 3 door, non-heated (so no messing about with wiring/coding) and 30 minutes down the road from me. Fate, it seems, favours me this past month. More to come within the next few weeks.

Another small update with some bits I’ve been hording lately, awaiting a time when they can get fitted.

Audi S3 rear brake set up (I have Ferodo pads to go with these, but aren’t at hand for a cheeky photo);
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Rear_S3_Brakes_zps9d36cdfa.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Rear_S3_Brakes_zps9d36cdfa.jpg.html)

Whiteline anti lift kit;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/WALK_zps5359b568.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/WALK_zps5359b568.jpg.html)

And some Forge carbon canister silicon pipes. Purely for engine bling;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Forge_CC_Hoses_zps4aff4860.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Forge_CC_Hoses_zps4aff4860.jpg.html)

Tomorrow I’m hoping to fit my new R32 Recaro seats, steering wheel and leather door cards. Depending on time/mood, I may attempt to wire in my new front speakers also, but may do that in the new year instead when I have more free time.

Sadly, it looks like that there will be no more updates, certainly not big jobs, for the rest of this year. I’m away now for 2 months, then it’s Christmas so the chances of getting out onto the Golf are slim at best. To round out the year, I think it’s fair to say in summary that a bloody lot has happened in just one year but with anyone who’s modifying their car, the more you do the more there is to do!

So to sort of close off this year’s modifications, I’ve tried to take a few photos of various bits I’ve done. Needless to say, most are crap and not good enough to make it onto the web but here’s a few to enjoy for now.

First one I got was the other night when it was nice and foggy at night;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0007_zps0504a967.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0007_zps0504a967.jpg.html)

Next up was one taken tonight with some heavy editing to try and reduce the effects of the orange lights I was under, not very successfully I may add. Least favourite of the 5 uploads tonight but better than a lot of the others I took;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0013_zps021687f1.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0013_zps021687f1.jpg.html)

Half an hour drive later, found a spot with some white lights but they ended up being too bright one direction and too dark the other;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0015_zps1723cbce.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0015_zps1723cbce.jpg.html)

However, I knew roughly what I was doing for this next shot. I need to go somewhere darker and use white LED lighting inside the car, but still quite happy with this shot;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0023_zps02da06c0.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0023_zps02da06c0.jpg.html)

But the money shot of the evening;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0024_zpsce6f8d4a.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0024_zpsce6f8d4a.jpg.html)

That last one is by miles my favourite image of my car, ever! Need to refine some others and practise my skills a bit but I’m starting to get the hang of image editing properly as well rather than use pre-set filters and adjustments.

That’s all for now…

Finally managed to take my Golf out for a spin around Dartmoor this morning, didn't get to stay out long as the weather was due to turn bad around mid afternoon so just went to scout out the roads and see what they're like now I'm running Bilstein B14 coil overs. I also wanted to grab a picture of some wild Dartmoor ponies too, but sadly I got distracted by the driving experience.

I've toyed with the idea all year about whether to keep my Golf as it is so it's a half way house between daily driver and weekend toy, or to replace the daily duties with something more suited and turn this into an all out toy. But after today's drive I've realised keeping it almost as she is will be the way ahead for the foreseeable future.

The roads through Dartmoor, for those who haven't been lucky enough to visit the moors, are second only to the views along the way. Long, undulating roads with tight corners but in the weather I had today you can see the road ahead in places) for miles so over taking and cutting corners was the order of the day. Despite only running coil overs, the chassis handled everything I threw at it without a problem. My OEM mk6 R brakes coped with the punishment well too, really showing why investing just a few hundred pounds into them was one of the best ideas I've had so far.

After touring across Dartmoor and enjoying the views along the straighter roads, I came out onto the A38 and cruised back to Plymouth in complete comfort. The B14's transforms from an inspiring and confident suspension kit to a better than stock comfortable ride along the A roads. Also, the R32 buckets proved their worth today by holding my firmly in place while throwing it around corners and comforting me further along the A roads.

Today has been the first day in over a year (I think) that I've really been able to go out and enjoy my car fully for what I've modified it for. To be my ultimate driving machine. Didn't even get many pictures as I was having too much fun, but I did snap 2 just so it's not all text on this page of posts.

Provided the weather holds out next weekend I'll be going out with food to last the whole day and with a full battery on my SLR for many pictures out on the moors. Until then...

I got back up to Dartmoor today for a short while and in between showers, I managed just a few more pictures;

No more Dartmoor shots until I venture back this way for a holiday now. I love that place.

Grabbed myself a set of LED sidelights, seeing as they're all the rage right now.

Before:

After:

Need to get some whiter dipped and full beam bulbs now to finsih the look off. Also going to fit a set of LED interior and number plate nights.

Finally,after months and months (and miles and miles), I've sorted out the air bag light. Got a couple of resistors pre-made off eBay and fitted them up. Initially, fitted them wrong and got a second error message about there being a short to the earth wire, so battery back off, switched it up and then re-cleared the faults and done.
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20141129_120205_zpsfc7f8805.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20141129_120205_zpsfc7f8805.jpg.html)

Also finally put on my first in the UK sticker;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20141129_155510_zpsa1acbbd1.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20141129_155510_zpsa1acbbd1.jpg.html)

Slowly getting through the list of things that "need" (read "want") to get done.

So I'm happy with my stage 1+ and was focused on not doing any more to the engine until I had chassis, brakes and interior mods all sorted. Then this came up for a silly cheap price;

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/S3Intercooler_zps3c9d65e8.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/S3Intercooler_zps3c9d65e8.jpg.html)

I now have an S3 intercooler, which I plan to fit along with a Neuspeed hi-flow intercooler pipe (sourced) and K03 hi-flow turbo discharge kit (pending). I'm not bothering with an induction kit as from research the K03 is fine with the stock intake and a panel filter but may invest in a HPFP internals upgrade or APR/Loba pump (should one appear cheap enough).

Oh, and a full BCS system with R32 rear of course... Stage 2 by 2016 looks likely at the rate I'm going. Getting the current list of parts fitted before 2016 however, doesn't!

Got round to fitting my Forge CC pipes today;

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20141228_153753_zps5c750e04.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20141228_153753_zps5c750e04.jpg.html)

Nice bit of engine bling. Needs a good clean up, some red coil packs and wiring harness, plus a few bits of paint here and there to tidy it right up. Mostly it's all hidden under the engine cover but in case a cheap induction kit pops up for sale, despite the last post saying I won't bother with one. Revo or VW Racing intakes are the only ones I'd opt for and they'd have to be at just the right price to temp me.

When I replaced my CC pipe work, I completely forgot to replace the MAF sensor and air feed! My engine wasn't running right at all and it took a fault scan for me to realise I'd missed replacing the air feed and MAF sensor after 2 days. Really shouldn't be near cars with tools, but there you go, lesson learned...

Also begun the task of replacing my centre console and arm rest for a leather one today. Took several hours yesterday to dismantle things and get the old items out the car;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150102_104047_zps6ba41d86.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150102_104047_zps6ba41d86.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150102_104106_zps0cd8747e.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150102_104106_zps0cd8747e.jpg.html)

I've had to remove the driver's seat to get it removed, will have to remove the passenger seat as well. It does make life a lot easier though, and my efforts were rewarded;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150101_130059_zps9d517329.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150101_130059_zps9d517329.jpg.html)

Then today I began fitted the new alcantara trimmed centre console;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150102_114419_zpscd3f59c7.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150102_114419_zpscd3f59c7.jpg.html)

Now fitting the arm rest and trying to figure out how to fit the air vent in the arm rest, it's not easy at all... Stay tuned for finished pictures soon, hopefully with a better quality camera than my phone.

Looking back through this whole project log and it’s clear that the first half has been a performance focused project but then it became all cosmetic. July was the last performance modification that was done to the car in the form of Bilstien B14 coilovers from AMD Tuning. Since then it was all interior focused really, as I wanted to make the driving experience inside as good as it was underneath. I don’t regret such a change in priorities but lately I’ve lost a lot of motivation for cosmetic modifications as they are a lot of work (sourcing, planning and in some cases, fitting) and although pretty, do very little to change the feel of the car when driving.

That all changed today…

My day started well, woke up on time, got ready and left for the drive from London to AKS Tuning in Bedford with a pit stop for fuel at Tesco. £1.10 a litre for premium and less than £50 to fill up from just below a quarter. Then onto the M1 which was clear enough that I could cruise at 70 the whole way there, also didn’t get lost. Booked it to start at 9am and I arrived exactly on time. A good omen, or too much luck used up too early? Well…

A good omen. Had a quick chat with Alex (who is as nice as people say) and he laid out everything for me to look at and take pictures for this log;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/SuperPro01_zps7dc6a72c.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/SuperPro01_zps7dc6a72c.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/SuperPro02_zpsd22c26d4.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/SuperPro02_zpsd22c26d4.jpg.html)

So if you don’t know already, I put my name down for the SuperPro group buy to take advantage of a good discount on the full front and rear upgrade kit for my Golf. Also asked to have H&R anti-roll bars fitted as it seemed sensible while the whole suspension system was pulled apart. Plus the quoted price was the same price AMD Tuning where asking for just the SuperPro kit on its own! How can I refuse that kind of bargain?

Watching Alex work is hypnotic, found myself just staring and watching in wonder, but pulled myself together long enough to get some “in progress” shots for you all to enjoy.

Anti-lift kit;

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/SuperPro05_zpsa8b8999f.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/SuperPro05_zpsa8b8999f.jpg.html)
The rear assembly taken apart;
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/SuperPro06_zpsa1b43905.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/SuperPro06_zpsa1b43905.jpg.html)

The ball joints put up a protest and several of the bolts sheared off which was expected but strangely, I didn’t think of asking to have the SuperPro versions added to my shopping list so some stock ones are on for now but may upgrade on my next visit to AKS. At 6:45pm (just shy of 10 hours later) I paid up and got the keys back.

I’m not going to talk about the kit just now (bizarrely) as I was really tired and hungry after spending most of the afternoon playing GT5 while waiting plus it was the end of rush hour so going to get a few hundred miles on the various bits before forming an opinion on the upgrades. Annoyingly, I asked if I could drop my suspension down another 10mm ahead of my first track day in March but when we had a look at the Bilstiens it was quickly apparent they are already wound down fully (their max of 50mm) so there’s no more left in them in terms of drop. I’m happy with the way the car sits but wanted that little bit more for the track but never mind.

Been a long time since I’ve been able to write an essay about performance modifications but feels good to sit here and chat for a while. Here’s some pictures to feast upon now, please enjoy and as usual, feedback is more than welcome!

So in keeping with monthly updates, I've chucked together a few photos and some text. First little change up was returning to a stock grill:
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150311_170825_zpswyzo5vlm.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150311_170825_zpswyzo5vlm.jpg.html)

Also added some R32 rear lights:
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150311_170739_zpsu9or4klj.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150311_170739_zpsu9or4klj.jpg.html)

And now running some Team Dynamic Pro Race 1.2's in an 18 inch matt black flavour:
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150311_170723_zpsbsudghrg.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150311_170723_zpsbsudghrg.jpg.html)

Also signed up to a group buy for a BCS turbo back exhaust sytem which will be with me end of April all being well. Oh, and decided to get some new brakes:
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150318_175051_zpskitgolth.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150318_175051_zpskitgolth.jpg.html)

Car insurance is due next month and the exhaust isn't cheap (despit being a good deal!) so slower progress over the coming months.

So, it’s only taken since January of this year to sort it out, but I finally have my arm rest fully installed! The hold-up came from no access to the sides of the arm rest with the seats in, plus I needed to re-remove the centre console to fit the air duct pipework for the rear vents. So after (scarily) just under an hour later it looked like this:
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150407_144520_zpsgaopnj9y.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150407_144520_zpsgaopnj9y.jpg.html)

One of the main access problems was this one screw:
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150407_145034_zpsqncc8ew8.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150407_145034_zpsqncc8ew8.jpg.html)

But my perfectionist side is now happy as its all bolted back in and there are no spare screws! Every single one is accounted for and where it should be:
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150407_151553_zpschodvh2t.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150407_151553_zpschodvh2t.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150407_153343_zps0tonj5y3.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150407_153343_zps0tonj5y3.jpg.html)

Really, I’d of liked to hoover the hell out of my interior while the car is in the state above, but due to personal circumstances massively changing in the last week, the location for this work is far from an ideal location. Still, it’s another job done and dusted, last job of the interior is to fit my front JBL speakers and possibly wire them up to the rear amplifier, although this is unlikely unless I can cleverly do it without removing the whole interior again. Seriously, it’s no joke that to wire up an amplifier in the rear you pretty much remove all the interior, just check my previous posts!

So what’s next for Evie then? Well, chances are that there won’t be an awful lot this month now as I need to focus on my mk4 V5 for a bit to get her running again and then sold on for a bit of profit to fund some bigger plans for Evie (not saying anything yet…). I’ve got my full turbo back exhaust on order and it’s due delivery at the end of April so once that arrives and I’ve sourced a cheap HPFP and maybe an full cold air intake (CAI) I’ll fit everything up (apart from the exhaust) and remap to finally be at stage 2+. After than it’ll most certainly be the new Porsche 4-piston front brakes with 330mm discs, and hopefully if I sell my other brake kit to claim money back, a set of re-coloured rear R32 310mm brakes too for some serious stopping power. Overall goal is to have the chassis capable of around 400bhp for future development. Oh wait, you’re not supposed to know that’s a figure I have in my head…

For now, it’s just a case of waiting for a wash (both me and Evie!) and a final money shot for the evening. Peace, ya’ll!

So, time for an actual update in keeping with the monthly progress. This month it's all about being a hypocrite! I've always voiced an opinion that a full CAI on a K03 turbo engine as overkill and kills torque lower down the rev range... Well I decided that I needed one anyway regardless as retail therapy is always a winner, right?

So, just to guage how big the cone filter is on the RamAir intake, I put it next to a 1 litre water bottle. Oh my, what a big cone filter you have grandma:
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150413_171018_zpsnqxma4hy.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150413_171018_zpsnqxma4hy.jpg.html)

So got outside and began removing the engine cover and old set-up. Here's a tip people, get yourself a set of hose clip pliers as they will save you both time and skin on your hands. Seriously, this one tool was worth the £30 I paid for a whole set of various pliers:
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150413_190047_zpslt81a5as.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150413_190047_zpslt81a5as.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150413_190052_zpsrqe4pwhi.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150413_190052_zpsrqe4pwhi.jpg.html)

Seriously, took longer to get the rubber air feed from the air box to the turbo off than the hose clip. Those pliers made it all of a 10 second job and I'm not even joking! So, all stripped off in about 15 minutes:
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150413_190533_zpsila5m4ux.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150413_190533_zpsila5m4ux.jpg.html)

I needed to "borrow" some of the engine rubber mounts to fit the RamAir heat shielding:
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150413_191601_zpsbbrt6xbv.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150413_191601_zpsbbrt6xbv.jpg.html)

Quite an easy kit to fit, but a single piece of pipe work like the Revo kit would of been even simpler but at £155, I'm not complaining in the slightest! All finished about 20 minutes before sundown:

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150413_195252_zpsx5gjbhwx.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150413_195252_zpsx5gjbhwx.jpg.html)

I'll write up in another post what I think of it, I'd also like to get back onto the AmD Tuning rolling road to see just what a difference it makes over my original set-up. The reason I need to use AmD is although their figures a generous to say the least, because my original power run was from there it's the only way to make a fair comparison between a panel filter and full CAI. I won't be too interested in total power gain, more about how it's affected the power curve and where the peak power/torque now are.

Future plans for the next month? Well, as some of you may be aware I'm working on a mk4 Golf V5 so once I've got that finished up and running, I'll make some serious progress with Evie. Yes, I've gone back to naming my car as now she's the only girl in my life... SO if all goes well with the mk4 I'll be confident enough to fit my 330mm Porsche front brakes, S3 intercooler and if I can source one, a HPFP all ahead of getting a full turbo back exhaust fitted. Basically, if you haven't guessed, stage 2+ is officially happening! Target is 275bhp but I'd love to start aiming for 300bhp+ (a hint to future plans as well all know the K03 limit lies around 285bhp). For now, peace...

So lately, things have been a bit up and down for me, struggling with things in my life but as ever, the Golf has helped me through. May of been a bit crazy with buying things, so got to sort that all out (hence the current large amount of things for sale on the forum!) and then get back on track. I do have a master plan for the GTI but it's gone way off course right now. Still, getting it into a magazine though, so here's some shots that'll be used (hopefully) to get this back into the main light. My mk4 Golf V5 has stolen a lot of attention lately...

(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0166_Shrink_zpsbij3wywq.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0166_Shrink_zpsbij3wywq.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0161_Shrink_zpsuqoyahmq.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/DSC_0161_Shrink_zpsuqoyahmq.jpg.html)

So what's next for the GTI? Well, I have my S3 intercooler and a HPFP to fit as well as waiting for my Powervalve full turbo back exhaust to arrive. Next month I plan to get the GTI into the workshop and use the V5 for a month or two while I go over everything engine-wise to finish up and get her ready for a stage 2+ map. Going back to AmD Tuning as I really rate their stage 1 map and customer service and they're local enough to me (despite since moving away from the area). I know R-Tech's reputation but I'm going back to my own plans from a year ago which has AmD Tuning stage 2 featured heavily in it, for reasons I won't share right now.

Interior wise, save up and sort it! I half-arsed it and it p***'s me off that it's not finished the way I want to so I'm going to save up, strip it all out and start again. Literally. Again, the V5 will come into service while I get seats re-done in stages. Had toyed with some custom Cobra Misano seat, if someone offers me the right month for my R32 buckets then it may be a go ahead... Oh, and did someone say cage? :happy2:

Brakes and suspension, well, got my 4 piston Porsche 330mm front brakes sat waiting to go on, and may also get round to re-painting my R32 rears now I can use a shot blaster myself. Get all the brakes upgraded one last time and then it's exactly the way I want it chassis wise. Suspension really need for nothing, maybe some 3-way adjustable coilovers at a later stage if I feel the need.

Bodywork plans are simple enough. Fit the ED30 spitter I've had laying in my collection of bits for nearly a year now, USA smooth grill and general tidy up if my re-spraying skills prove good enough. Going to practise on the V5 first and get my eye in, then tackle it myself to save a ton of cash.

So that's my plans, lets see how things pan out over the rest of the year.

So as many people are now aware, the GTI is up for sale. But it needed a good clean before I could seriously advertise it for sale, so today I spent a good 3 hours giving it some well needed love. The results are quite good considering I was only giving it a "quick" detailing:
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150628_113645_zpska4putga.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150628_113645_zpska4putga.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150628_113627_zpscagv8huj.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150628_113627_zpscagv8huj.jpg.html)

Obligatory water beading shot:
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150628_145146_zps5gdehzqg.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150628_145146_zps5gdehzqg.jpg.html)

So why have I decided to sell my pride and joy? Simply, this:
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150628_162209_zpsaa3rce3q.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150628_162209_zpsaa3rce3q.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150628_162239_zpset1ofvce.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150628_162239_zpset1ofvce.jpg.html)
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150628_162225_zpsgj85pzsy.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/IMG_20150628_162225_zpsgj85pzsy.jpg.html)

Decided it was too much to tackle the GTI and my mk4 V5 at the same time but I didn't want to part ways with the V5 (strangely) and I wanted something that would rival the GTI in terms of power but be kind of where I wanted the GTI to go after enough time. It wasn't really a difficult choice going for a mk6 Golf R, considering I wanted 4motion and 400bhp from the GTI, but the problem would always be I wouldn't of had DSG, and this is where the Golf R won the argument. It's essentially where I wanted the GTI to be minus the 400bhp, but for now I'll be happy to drive the Golf R as she is until the mk4 V5 is finished.

It'll be a very sad day seeing my GTI drive away, but these things must be. I've owned it for nearly 3 years and loved every minute, the highlight was this month featuring in Volkswagen Driver magazine ahead of GTI International, feels pretty amazing to achieve something I set out to do when I started modifying the car. I may take it to GTI International for one last blast before tucking it up safely and waiting for the right seller. Although I may take the Golf R up to give it it's initiation into it's new world. Haven't decided yet...

I took the car to Car Audio Security to have them fit the new stereo correctly and properly as I was fed up of trying myself. The guys there are really, genuinely passionate and caring about their work, the workshop guys are so welcoming and happy to share knowledge and keep you informed of what they're doing. And I was asked to come back and show them my Golf R, just because they want to see it! Needless to say, I shall now be upgrading the ICE in the Golf R through them as I'm totally blown away with their service.

Speaking of ICE, here it is finished off:
(http://i687.photobucket.com/albums/vv235/mikemaher205/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Stereo_Fitted_zps0cqivakl.jpg) (http://s687.photobucket.com/user/mikemaher205/media/Project%20Golf%20Mk5%20GTI/Stereo_Fitted_zps0cqivakl.jpg.html)

And now the sad bit...

This is the end of the line for the GTI in my ownership. I met up with a new owner today who wants to swap my GTI for his 2003 Golf R32, we took some test drives and spent some chatting and agreed to go ahead with the swap. So by the end of the month I shall part ways with the GTI, possibly forever. It's really mixed emotions for me, as I've invested not just money into the build, but so much time and passion that it's genuinely like a break up with a partner for me. I don't care if people think I'm sad for being emotionally attached to my GTI, but it's helped me through some of the roughest times in my life in recent years and it was the achievement of my dreams to have owned one.

I just hope the new owner loves her as much as I have and still do. Maybe they'll even take it in new directions or go where I was going to go with it. Only time will tell. But for now, I think it's only right to say thank you to all of those who have followed this build and left nice comments or sent kind words over messages. It's through the support of most of the people in the VW world that I've made it through the recent years.

But... This is far from good bye from me!
