If you suspect the ECU in some way, have you got a look at it? Might sound silly, but VW fitted then in a rather daft position just below the windscreen!  You can just see it through the scuttle panel, but need the scuttle off to check it over. Could be water damage if the scuttle drain holes are blocked.

I had the ECU out already and there was no sign of damage or corrosion. Also tried cleaning up the earths under the battery tray

Another thing worth mentioning is that the EPC light illuminates when the car is in the high idling state. Could this narrow down my investigation?

Update: I've realised that the ASR no longer seems active. I press the button and it should illuminate on the tachometer to signify that is is turned off, but there is nothing. Apparently, it should stay illuminated if there is a fault  :undecided:

Could this be connected to the engine cutting out?

Still stuck on this one guys. Has anyone experienced problem with FBW? Research has pointed me to a possible problem with the pedal sensor.

Do any of said symptoms sound characteristic of FBW issues?
