The Mk8 must improve on mpg to meet the EEC 2020 emissions rules.
It should be lean and mean. Keep your 5's and 6's and wait.

In 8 years the Mk9 will be out. That should be a good car. Eight years soon passes, just like buying an '04 now.
-
This picture put the passing of time into perspective for me. It seems no time at all since I bought my Mk4 new in 1999.

Tis true, I had my mk5 GT in tornado red in 2005 and it feels like 5 minutes ago, still say it was my favourite too!

Really?

In the above photo they do. I think that's just the angle though as a picture of the rear 1/4 of each doesn't really give a great impression of each, but the car's profiles all still have the same touches.
Swage lines below rear window to boot (except mk4/6), lower bumper has swage line from wheel arch to other wheel arch, lights all squared off until mk4, when they all sweep back towards the front of the car. Rear door shuts all "point" towards the rear where window meets metal. All have small little spoilers above boot glass etc etc.
-
What were they thinking with the Mk5's rear valance?

"How can we save €2.7 per build - I know lets not paint the rear valance"
-
I Like that pic of all 7. And it reminds me of the question - has anyone on here owned at least one example of all 6 previous versions?
I've had 2 Mk2s, 1 Mk3, 2 Mk4s and 1 Mk6. I used to drive a Mk1 as it belonged to my first long term girlfriend but have never had a Mk5 as the Mk4s put me off VW for a while.
The Mk7? I reckon I might be due a change come Edition 40 time but since that'll still look exactly like a Mk6 and be £1 million anyway I suspect I might end up skipping the Mk7.
-
I've owned a 1, 2, 3 two fives and now the six. Someone asked me what car ill be having next and I said probably another golf, they just looked at me gone out - love it!!!!
-
You're lucky Ginge - at least you managed to avoid the abomination that was the Mk4!!!
-

+1 on that post - great comparison between all the models.
-
My ex had a mk4 150 pd remapped and I hated it but that was probably cos she was a cow! Haha!
-
I've had/got and 2, 4 and 6. So for continuity I guess I should wait for the 8 before buying another.
-
I've had 1,2....5,6 so guess a wait for 9 for me
The 3 & 4 made me buy SEATs
-
Had a 4 and 5 and now have a 6. Will I have a 7? Probably not, although I'd be very tempted by the new Leon; looks sharper, is cheaper, metallic and white paint don't cost extra, it's pretty much a Golf under the skin and it has a proper handbrake too!

No doubt the Leon is great value, just interior quality is a few steps behind the Golf equivalent, depends how much that bothers you.
Only had a 5 & 6 myself, but would love a restored MK1

All mine have been GTI's Mk2 8v, Mk3 8v, Mk4 150, ED30, Mk6 and now ED35. I would like a Mk1 just to complete the full range.
For me the Mk3 was the worst and such a let down after the Mk2 and the Mk4 was no better but was much faster. Going from the Mk4 to the ED30 was such a huge leap and can't even be compared IMO.
I will probably get a Mk7 as I like the look of the GTI just depends if I like the drive.
-
MK1 GTI, 4X MK2 GTI, 2X MK3 VR6, 1X MK4 GTI, 1X MK5 GT TDI, 1X MK5 GTI, 2X MK6 GTI
and that's my caps lock all worn out!
Will I get a mk7? Maybe, depends if I can afford one really.
-
Local media saying they expect a long life for the platform, so perhaps mk8 will just be a facelisfted mk7.
-
39 VWs in total and yes, I've had the lot, MK1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Does not bother me that much. I would much prefer a manufacture to spend money on mechanical aspects than on touchy feely plastics. So painted panel edges so wings, boot etc don't rot out like they do on the 5 and 6. Or foam that sokes up water to cause wing and sill rot for a little less road noise like the late 5 & 6. Or lack of underseal like the 5 & 6. Compared to there seat version. I guess this is what happens when the world turns into pen pushers with no practical skills the accountents take over and no one realised as no one knows better as there are no engineers left.
