If I HAD to get a diesel and had the money I would get an A3 170 S-Line. The S-line kit REALLY sets it apart and its a proper smart motor. I was looking at the 140s before seeing the light and got the GTI.

Yep that's the price.
 
Changing to derv might save you £1000 per year on fuel (over 18000 miles), I wouldn't bother changing car, but I think I would move house.

Diesel would give you a decent fuel saving, but the depreciation would be more from a similar price base as the GTI will hold it's value .

Your car at say £13k would still be worth £8k in 2 yrs, but a £13k derv would drop to around £5k in 2yrs.
