Bought non turbo, looks like a turbo
« on: 05 January 2020, 20:18 »
Hi
Recently purchased a cheap 1.8 non turbo gti, it has check engine light and some oil in the engine bay which is booked to get checked.  After popping hood for the second time I realised the cover says 20v turbo and after lifting the casing it has a forge diverted valve fitted.  Is this actually a turbo and how can I tell the difference from a non turbo?
Thanks!

I'd have a look down the back of the engine .. if there's a turbo fitted it's a 1.8t

Oh, if you don't want to pop the bonnet, pop the boot instead and look at the sticker on the back panel, it'll tell you the engine code. If it's AGU then it's the 1.8t

Pretty pointless if the cars been converted and agu isn’t the only code the 1.8t has

No one in their right mind would convert a 20v to a 20vt as you can buy them for nowt and I doubt it's beyond the ability of the OP to google the engine code .. thanks for you input

It could have been done years ago mk4s are 20 years old now and clearly the op hasn’t got a clue or he would have noticed when buying the car not after hence his question

Thanks guys... well some of you
Turns out it is a 1.8T and therefore was an absolute bargain
Guy before me owned for 10 years without realizing what he had
Guess not having a clue pays off sometimes

Unless it’s a stolen engine  or you haven’t insured it with the 1.8t declared
