Hi all,

Guess you could say I'm a born again dub fan - owned 8 fords (2 mk3 1300 escorts, 2 xr2's - one was a track car made road car with twin carbs mmmmm - mk3 xr3i, xr21 8v, Fiesta RS Turbo and Escort Cosworth Replica - in no real order...) previous (oh n a nova gte but shhhhhhhhhhh...). My current daily hack is an early 16v Corrado that i have owned nearly a year and in that short time i can say that I'm loving the dub scene... Which made me think that i should have a project - ideally the corrado would have been it but i need it as a daily driver for work, so...

I picked up a Mk1 Golf 3dr driver in white about 3 weeks ago (free to a good home...)!!! So i am building a Mk1 and hopefully it will be retro and wait for it... hot rod themed... unfortunately no big flames and no 5 litre Chevy v8 either I'm afraid! As fare as Hot Rods go, I just love their interior styling and they tend follow two routes for styling - slick bodywork and top notch paintjobs - chrome everywhere or rat rod sort of style where everything kinda looks a little unfinished but remains very original (whereas orginal means using original oem parts...) i on the other hand wanna find a middle ground...

I have noticed this section seems to be full of Mk2 golfs - i understand theres more of em around (and personally have no problem with them!), but a big reason i went for a Mk1 cos its different and has that classic style - oh and it reminds us how the scene started...

I already have some pics of the car when i picked it up - an '83 3dr driver (called "Bunni" guess thats what having girlfriends does to ya - makes you name your car!)... its up my friends farm at the moment - stripped and in the workshop, ready for bodywork to commence. So will start the write up with them below...

I will be providing an update every weekend at least - well in pics anyway, if i buy parts in between then i can post as and when it happens. But due to work, basketball, college and second job commitments i only really have time at weekends.

Hope this sounds of interest to some if not all of you and sorry for babbling on...

Cheers Ian (Whiteee)

In the pic of the rear of the car you can see the remainders of the kit that was on the car - i have been informed by the owner it was similar to the pic below (albeit not quite as well done...)

in the other pics you can make out that the front wings arent to straight (had a bit of filling - more about that later...) and need replacing - anyone have some cheap new ones? pattern ones are fine... i think gpc are the cheapest i can find!

I would like to point out that i got the car from a young lad and i am very grateful that he gave it to me for FREE... so if he or any of his friends are reading this i hope none of my comments about the condition of the car offend!

The following are pics of the car the day after i picked it up - at my mates farm (yes i live on the isle of wight and no we are not all farmers... i wish i was then i would have my own barns to restore/work on cars in!!!) waiting for a small clearing in one of the workshops... please note the capri is not mine but another project currently on the go up "THE FARM"

As you can see the car is missing a few parts - although inside the car we have tailgate (rusted on bottom edge - seeking replacement...), bonnet, both door windows, both rear 1/4 windows (front windscreen cracked - possible insurance claim me thinks...), dash and door cards but NO seats and carpet - loom is inside car but only plugged into steering column. Not alot of stripping to do? fair bit of buying to do?

Next stage get car into workshop - strip more parts and assess condition of existing parts/shell and determine wants list.? :undecided:

cars in workshop (shared with the lil mini below... one of the first projects up the farm) and stripping has commenced (easy girls i meant of the car... its too cold for me to get undressed at the mo!?)

aforementioned wings have to come off, passenger door and tailgate needs replacing too. Looks like gpc for new pattern wings if not then gsf car parts (if anyone has a pair of front wings please email/pm me, also if anyone knows of a site/company that sells them cheap or if i should avoid any such wings let me know!)

Whilst i was moving the car from one end of the farm to the other - helped that it was so bare and empty to push it - it snowed... then sleet... then hail... which was nice! Only a little remained as i returned to my corrado (daily hack... in tank green metallic - without a sunroof... rare apparently?! I wonder why...? :undecided:) nice yellow primer on that slam panel n nearside wing... a story for another time - mayb...

A lil more work has been carried out this wknd...

Here are the main areas of concern on the bodywork... both front arches and rear nearside arch - offside only has a couple of small holes (from previous bodykit i guess) but is solid underneath. WHERE CAN I GET REAR ARCH REPAIR PANELS/KITS?

The front wings have seem a cheap repair previously (a proper bodge but i guess the previous owner was happy with what he did for the money...), but to be honest check out the filler - it had several wire mesh sheets laid in it and the amount of filler must of cost more than a replacement wing...

Next was sunroof... after removing the roof n mechanism i found it to be mmm not too bad - except the rust... DOH! In the corners of the channels where the drainage pipe is connected has errrrr... left bunni?!??

Any ideas on the repair? Im envisaged this as the most difficult bodyrepair...

Also removed the wings... took over an hour to do both - most of it spent on the nearside one which had more sealant than i have seen on all the cars wings i have owned... was over an inch thick and i didnt even know where the bolts were - after shaving it all off with stanley knife (blunt chisel...) and a screwdriver i eventually got to the bolt heads. Please note first pic has the pile of shavings on the floor next to wheel...

Apart from minor surface rust where wing met window/shuttle panel the inner wings are in great condition.

Whilst im waiting for replacement parts its time to break out the sander and grinder to tidy up the bodywork - and a bit more steam cleaning of the interior...

Also got to decide on WHAT COLOUR?!? Right im off to buy some more sanding pads... watch this space!

Not alots happened this week so far... ordered some new parts and tools/sundries...

first to arrive was my new touch up gun - just a cheap one but shud b good for detail painting - arches - inside and engine bay... save trying to manouvre a full size setup into those hard to reach places!

Sunday afternoon after buying a new sander i managed to attack the old filler and sealant that attached the old bodykit... not alot to show really so no massive pics for once... although i did take some!

oh but i did get this pic...

excuse the straw and muck on the floor - it is a barn up "the farm!"

No pics as i haven't been up to the farm in the last couple of days - loads of sanding pads and paper arrived today tho so i have a long weekend of getting dusty i think. Oh and will probably need some filler - light skim coat planned ready to be sanded flat and find any high/low spots. Have to go pick up paint - well more to the point primer, some degreaser and tack cloths etc etc

Update on parts - Not ordered rear arch repair panels yet - don't want to spend too much in one go and wont be able to fit them for a few weeks, ordered front wings which are hopefully arriving this week end so i can prep them - after the inner arches are done first - so i guess i will work on them on the bench. Still undecided on colour - will either remain white (very fitting with my name...) or a blue - always loved one blue but its been used a few times on golfs... Guesses on a post card (or PM!)

will have big update this weekend all going well - unless the weather is real good then i will be down one of the beaches down here on the island...

Well not an overly productive couple of last weekends... easter i was busy and the new front wings hadn't arrived anyway (had delay cos i live on this damn island...)

They arrived during the week but this weekend i have had to work sat day and night as well as having my last basketball match of the season.

I managed to give them a light sand just to check for imperfections - off side appears to be fine but the nearside needs a little work (minor ding on wing top and strange crease where wing meets front grill!) otherwise pretty pleased with condition and quality of the new parts - wonder if they will fair as well as original VAG items. This whole car is being made/built/restored on a small budget and i will be carrying out most of the work myself, i would love to use all the best/original/most expensive parts and have all work carried out by professionals... but its the real world!

Here are the wings in place... not a lot to see but gave me and idea of alignment and just generally checked if they were straight.

Next is more prepping, having completed removal of imperfections around both rear arches to assess situation, i have concluded i need a rear arch repair panel for at least the nearside, but may as well order one for each. So i will be cleaning/sanding/scraping any unwanted crap off of inner arches and underside (if i can solidify car and turn over...) and then onto filling - sanding etc... until next time - bye bye!
