Max tyre size?
« on: 05 April 2003, 08:22 »
Hi
I am waiting for my new Golf to arrive. I have tyres 235 50 16's. I am wondering if they will case problem on alloys that are 16 X 7.5?
Has anyone tried to get this size tyre on alloys and without any problem?
Thanks
Dave

You would usually go for 205/45/16s so that is a fair old bit different. Why do you want to go for that size? The overall rolling radius must be quite a bit out so will make the speedo wrong for starters...

Hi jv,
Standard tyre size for VW golf is 175/80 R14 or 195/65 R15. Both of these
give an external tyre diameter of 635.6mm or 634.5mm respectively.
The tyre fitted to the GTi is 205/55 R16 which gives 631.9mm.
What I intend fitting is 235/50 R16 which gives 641.4mm.
According to my calculations, the GTi speedo reads approx 60.5 mph where
the golf on standard wheels & rubber reads 60 mph. With the wheels and
tyres I want to fit, I reckon it'll read 59.46 mph at the same speed.
I'm not worried about the speedo reading. The reason I'm hoping to fit
these is that I have 4 Dunlop SP9000 tyres in this size, unused from a
previous car. I would prefer to avoid buying more tyres if these will do.
My real concern is that the width will cause them to rub on
bodywork/chassis/etc., and that's what I was looking for reassurance on.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Any more input would be much
appreciated.

Dave
