Title: One for the experts, air bag warning ligh and fault codes!
Post by: tonyg on 22 October 2009, 20:57
First of all i'm pretty new here so Hello all!

Right, i'm in need of some expert advice and any help is much appreciated.
The problem is with my 01 Golf 1.8 Gti T 5 door that i bought yesterday. The air bag light is on and it has obviously had a bump at the front upper passenger side.

It was the right price so i bought it regardless.

It's showing 8 codes in total and none of them will delete, they are:

0253 Crash data stored faulty
04BE Air bag control unit crash data stored belt tensioner
024C Drivers side front air bag, ignitor circuit 1, highly resistive
024D Passenger side front air bag, ignitor circuit 1, highly restive
028F Belt tensioner ignition circuit passenger side front highly resistive
028E Belt tensioner ignition circuit driver side front of low impedence
0214 Power supply signal too low
0513 Gateway blocked power failure

The error codes would not delete and i realise after reading the error codes it sounds bad but the car looks and drives extremely well.

So has anybody got any advice on where to start with this please?

sounds like the seat belt tensioners have fired and also the airbags too ? have the airbags been replaced etc ? any history of cat d/c etc

you can get the crash history removed from the log by sending unit off for clearing as not possible with a scanner , i have a number if you need it .

clear the codes... and see which ones come back.. if airbags been replaced and your seat belts are working fine then its just matter of clearing em... check the airbag plug's aswell..may just not been put on propely

i had a bump on mine and both seat belts siezed up.. so had get new belts (they come with tensioners on em) and cleared codes ..then airbag light went off

Cheers for the quick response!

I hpi'd the car and it clear and it's obvious just by looking under the bonnet that it wasn't a big bump.

I didn't realise the crash data couldn't be deleted via the scanner so thanks for that snap-on can you give me the number please to get the unit wiped?
If the airbags had fired then they've been replaced the interior looks and is fitted as good as factory, so maybe its had a new dash and steering wheel.

Like navmk4gti says, maybe i need to get new seat belts and then clear the codes and go from there.

Where is the airbag ecu?

I will let you know how i get on!

Cheers guys very helpful!

Yeah i tried to remove them with vagcom but they wouldn't delete, it wasn't until i started this thread that i learnt you need a specialist to remove them.

After a quick search on google i found this company;

Has anybody used these before?

They can also be cleared if you know anyone with Vag K+ Commander it has a reset crash data function

thats a good price £45 so worth doing it with them ! you also need to find out if the belt tensioners have fired and not been replaced etc , you might even have a faulty unit which is showing all these codes or maybe if the car had i light impact where a wiring loom travels and it got damaged and repaired or damaged and never found !

if the bags go off its just a case of replacing them which is easy for anyone to do but you then need to get the crash data removed from the unit . thats why scanners wont remove the data for safety reasons etc as you could buy a car thats had a wack change the bits , clear the codes and sell on quick so the next person has a wack a nothing happens etc etc .

have a good look to see if or where its had an impact and have a good look around as bodywork and trims hide a lot of stuff .
have you checked all airbag fuses etc ?

I've just had a look and i can't find the airbag fuses location, i took the panel off the side of the dash and checked the numbers etc but some say to check the manual so i looked through the books but still couldn't suss it.

Could someone tell me where they are please?

Cheers for that old_n07 and yes i agree theres no fuse for the air bags there.

So i'm just going to remove the airbag ecu and send it off, get it wiped, refit it and see what happens.

Just two more questions, how can i tell if the seatbelts need replacing and what part is it that 'goes off' in a crash situation, is it the reel or the buckle??

And whats the best way of getting to the air bag ecu??

you will know becuase the seat belts will be jammed.. and you wont be able to use them

Oh, ok. The seat belts seem to be working fine.

So it's nothing to do with the buckles then? Just that a mate of mine who i was talking to today said that the bukcles have compressed air to them and get forced towards the floor in a crash (as in to pull the belt tight), is this true or is it bollox??

when in a crash they do tighten up yes for safety.. i got airbag's in my seats so mine completed jammed up had change them completely as could not use them at all
