Engine oil question.
« on: 30 October 2016, 13:13 »
Coming up to winter and its harsh temps, I'm planning on giving my 2000 model 1.9 TDI and oil change.
I've carried out lots of searches on here regarding the correct oil to use and while there seems to be a lot of info available, a lot of it is quite old and most of it is very confusing.

What I really need to know is...what is the best brand/type/grade to use. I was just at the shop looking at Castrol Edge 5w30 and 5w40..the label states it's good for VW turbo motors, but it's fully synthetic and some posts on here suggest that it shouldn't be used.

I'm confused.

The pd engines use a specific oil that has an adxitive to prevent ware on the cam.
Everytime i buy oil for a pd i go to my motor factors and vive them the reg, they normally reply with 'you want the actual oil for it'

Alternativly go to tps and get quantum oil thwyll make sure its tbe right stuff

Thanks mate, but a 2500km (one way) trip is a bit far for a few litres of oil.

Local factors here will sell whatever makes them the most money...usually Russian.

Further to the above, I've been perusing the Castrol websites and it seems the choice comes down to Castrol Edge 5w30 (fully Synthetic) or Magnatec 5w30 (blended).

Thoughts?

Much appreciated mate...I actually went back and checked the distance after I posted ....around 5400kms from here to London...round trip of course!

Living where I do is very cheap but things that you guys take for granted are not often easy to get.

Get a 5w40 (some 5w30 have it too) with VW 505.01 approval for non-LL or if you like 5w30 or 0w30 with 507.00 approval for extended change intervals.

Examples of 505.01 oils:

and for 507.00 oils:

Sure you'll find some in BG from that list for a reasonable cost.....

Thanks for the links mate.

Interesting to note that the site recommends fully synthetic brands..I've been labouring under the impression that the blended versions were the way to go.

Some of the brands are readily available here and at a very reasonable price. ( Castrol, Valvoline, Mobil)

Because I drive very few miles every year, I change the oils by date and not mileage...about 2500 miles per year or every 6 months regardless.

Cheers
