Title: Cheap off camera flash light set up info
Post by: Horney on 13 February 2011, 18:37
Decided to spend the money I got for my old Mac on some lighting kit:

2 x Flash/Brolly brackets http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170438549281&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

2 x Gel sets http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230566108012&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

1 x Flash gun http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330516379087&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

1 x Shoot through brolly http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260730411567&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

1 x 2 in 1 Brolly http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260730411574&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

2 x Light Stands http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170467992215&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

1 x Trigger and 2 x receivers (My old ones are broken) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150552780445&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Should all arrive during the week this week so I'll get shooting with it all at the weekend!

Also my brother gave me a Hellios 44-2 lens and adapter for my birthday which is a cool little 58mm f2 manual focus lens built in the USSR.

It's a set up recommended by this guy: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ricknunn/

On his blog he did a comparison of this lot @ £180 vs the semi pros stuff @£600+ and he reckoned that while the more expensive stuff was better it wasn't £400 better.

end of the day, the only real difference is going to be in the stands and triggers e.g. a manfrotto stand will cost you probably twice as much but it will be more stable / able to take more weight as you're using strobes and brollies doesn't matter, pocket wizzards have a faster sync but shouldn't matter so sometimes the extra £££ isn't worth it.

Ha ha I thought that when I saw that shot as well.

Fast sync is the only thing I would love but the PW's are the most expensive bit of the expensive stuff! Maybe one day.

Next couple of days hopefully.

Just had a play with the triggers and they are so much better than the cactus ones I had before. Love the fact you can even use them with the supplied cable to get one camera to trigger another and flashes. You could therefore set up say 3 strobes and 2 cameras all to shoot the same subject at the same time lit from 3 directions and shot from 2!

Further impressed, they sync up to 1/200th perfectly and 1/250th with only a tiny bit of banding that could be easily shopped out if planned for in the shot. Much better than the old cactus ones which would struggle over 1/125th.

the sync cable option sounds good too, be ideal for 'studio' situation.

Flash gun and stand brackets have turned up today. Brackets are amazing build quality for the price, really impressed. The flash is also good looking for £35 and they threw in a free blower for cleaning my camera. Will sling some batterys in it tonight and see how it actually performs as a flash.

Just waiting on the light stands and gels now.

Excuse the cat lit trays and assorted rubbis, not much space in the flat at the minute! Tried out one of the stands (which turned up this arvo) with my old flash, the new triggers, the two different brollies and one of the brackets. Well chuffed!

Shoot through:

Will get some batteries later and try setting it all up for a self portrait if I can find the space to get it all up!

Top stuff,  ordered 2x Konig flash stands off amazon for less than £10 each after reading the reviews. Bought a shoot through brolly and 2 brackets!

Fortunately every wall in our new place is White so can use it as a backdrop. Still need triggers and a second flash!

FWIW when I shot the VX I used a pair of fluorescent tubes, powered off a cheapie 300W inverter in the back of the Passat.  Now I know it's not exactly pro lighting, but for about £30 it did a great job of lighting things up.

I think any form of off camera flash will help massively be it ebay gear or more expensive equiptment.

The thing I love it the extra scope it gives to be more creative and really come up with some awesome shots, ima member on a few of the strobist groups on flickr and they are great esp when you read the info regarding the set up of the shot, where they placed the lights etc etc, must admit ive foudn its a bit of trial and error

I would like to get another softbox for my lights but a letter box style one as the octa one is great but its fecking massive and can be a bit of a pain to move etc

I need to do some research, and invest in a second flash and another set of triggers.

This was my first attempt, basically just a test setup in the lounge. Off camera flash on stand with brolly.
