Mk3 GTI VR6
« on: 20 December 2014, 00:39 »
My new-ish VW. I'm finally getting around to fix it/ upgrade it. Thought i could ask about future upgrades/ introduce myself. Its a 1995 VW GTI VR6 with 245,000 miles (394,000 km) on it. The 2 previous owners took pretty good care of it. Very minor rust and average problems for the miles. I'm replacing the passenger (right) cv axle, all 4 brakes and the oil pan gasket this weekend.

Take the plastic sills off to see if there is any rust which needs attention

+100

Really look hard around the jacking points and sills, under the door rubbers and fix any roof rust above the screen asap.
Floor pan rust around the bungs is irritating but not the end of the world.
looks solid from the pics, I think I would go for all colour coded or all black plastic, the mix of red and black kind of makes it look like a CL :undecided:

Ill do a thorough under body look in a day or two when its on stands. The only rust I've found so far is the lip right under the hatch window and some on the frame up front. I know someone who has a paint booth that i will ask about redoing the hatch but what should i do to the frame?

Regarding looks i would like it to be like this one day with mudflaps and different rims.

No problem in getting those rims. Search ebay.de (BBS RS 722). I came to understand that the "20 Jahre" was limited in the UK. However in the rest of Europe it was unlimited, to plenty of those rims around.

Avoid the arch covers unless you want the Early VR/GTI look as they hold water and dirt and make rust...
If you do go for them then stick them on with silicone so you have no rivet holes and can remove them to clean and inspect arches.
I think the black rub strips and bumper tops make the Golf look much better than colour matched plastic throughout.
