Just wait a year or two mate. Insurance for me on a mk5 gti back in december when I got 1 years no claims was £4000.

I opted for a mk3 gti because they are 1 insurance group less, still pretty quick compared to my old 1.6, and the value of the car is less meaning the insurance is less.

In insurance terms, the words 'Golf' 'Young driver' and 'GTI' really do not go well in any combination.

I think you're already getting the hint

However, for what it's worth again, my first car was a 1.2 Vauxhall Nova. Worth about £3k. It cost me £1500 to insure it Fully Comp at the age of 18. That stung.

MANY years later, I went to pick up my Subaru Impreza. A young kid turned up with his parents. The salesman wheeled out a brand new P1 Impreza (circa £31k)......

"Happy (17th) Birthday, Son"

Took the sheen off my purchase that day, I can tell you!!

The point being that I went back about a fortnight later to sort something out - the salesman was laughing about *that* sale...... the kid was being charged £5k 3rd party fire and theft......

Get yourself something smaller (potentially with free insurance to build up your NCB) then come back - you'd probably quite easily get something like an R20 at decent money then ;) )

Best of luck either way :)

As for being a named driver on your dads policy but it being your car is illegal, it's called fronting. Insurance companies will do you over a barrel with a wire brush dipped in detol what ever car you have as first car.

Good luck

pmsl

ive said it before but i paid 2400 quid on a mini when i first started out, really not worth it,
think if i had my time again i would get a decent enough car and work on it in prioroty, eg, make it spotless first, then as the years go on start modding it with the cheapest insurance bill.

at least then if ya drive sensibly you'll have a decent car to sell and make money on???

Believe me its a dead ringer for you! Even says something stupid!
