Title: Ambient Lights - wiring
Post by: Jeni_R_ on 03 November 2017, 10:11
Would anyone be so kind in telling me where i access the wiring for the interior ambient lights so i can swap the ends round to make them red as per previous post couple years back Cebbes (no longer active) did this and it worked but i am unsure where to access the wiring i have manage to source the Haynes Manual for my car but its like reading swaheely and i cant find a direct link on it to the wiring

Anyone know where i should be looking ?

TIA

Not sure but pretty sure that you would have to remove the door cards.

I haven't got a clue but I would think if they don't disconnect easily then I'd just cut them and strip back and swap them over.

OK so NOWHERE shows what colpours to swap nor tells me what colour is what i gather

BROWN = LOAD
Blue = NEUTRAL

So what the hell is the white one ?

Can you post any pics of the wiring/pins?

From Cebbes post: Ambient lighting in Doors are led, so this has two connection pin 1 and pin 2.
So when you switch the kabel with pin 1 to pin 2 and pin 2 to pin 1 you will get red lights. yust reverse

Below is the thread for someone fitting the emergency door light it shows the connections

Seeing as that's my picture & thread...

Look at the connector for the ambient wiring there is a groove/join line across the width hallway down...there will be a flap which is hinged at one end & that groove is the area where the loose end flips up...you just need to look carefully at the connector from the side...flip up the side & then the pins come out...or they might need a paperclip (straight) into the holes where the pin end on face is...

Brown is earth, blue is power to door handle light & white is power to ambient lighting....that's at the 32pin door control module...so the blue & white there has me confused..

Hurrah someone that knows their stuff

Came across this flap earlier tried to push the pins out and no budge  :undecided: too dark when i get in now so will try again at the weekend

This is the flap i lifted earlier and underneatg i could see the metal of the wires i tried to slide them out but no joy

You are in the correct area....if you get the flap up & open  that's the first unlock...just look at the pins from the end one..right side of connector in picture...you see sliver slot where the pin is, then two shiny black (looks white) squares to the right of it...the black bit in between is a slot to feed in a pin/paperclip to then press in a one way spring tag on the metal pin which also holds it in..

Its just occurred to me when u take the door card off and unhook all the clips the ambient light clip attached to the door card and essentially the bulb, has 2 black and 1 red wire perhaps these are what i should be changing rather than the clip attached to the wire loom ?

Could well be.....as you need to reverse the wires on the door card..as the wiring looms are the same, but the door cards are different depending on trim spec..so it might be the ticket...

OBD11 shmeven...

VCDS is a wee bit more powerfull...& I've lost count of the adaptions I've done to mine...mind you I recode the light in the hatch to switch when you open the tailgate..so the LED licence plate lights don't blind me...I have the estate, licence plate in hatch

No problems...

My thread on fitting the door warning lights is pretty good info for removing the door cards...& the connector as you say should be easy...

So it would appear the following means that the LED in the door card is a single colour unit however there are 3 wires on the connector 1 red and 2 black,  will it make any difference or will it be the case that it is just one colour its just there are 3 wires ? i just wonder as Cebbes said to swap the pins around so judging by the 3 wires there is clearly 2 neg and 1 positive will swapping 1 red and 1 black make a difference as there is still a negative ? or am i being daft it is quite possible

I'd try it as if you have 2 x neg & 1 x pos on the door card side of the wiring then basically they have two led circuits....pos to both but only neg to one which means the other one won't work as the circuit is not complete as no neg...

So disconnect the existing neg to disable that led circuit & connect the other neg to connect that LED circuit...

Simples...

haaaaaaaaa simple aye nae bother

i shall send you a picture on Saturday  because even though i just read what you said 5 times i still dont know which neg is connected to the working connection the wee black box has numbers 1 to 4 on them and i am not sure what ones were connected strange why they would have 2 neg and 1 positive ....no ?

i think he's saying the live (red wire) should not be touched, it's the black wires that are the ones that decide the colour, so one black is to earth (making the circuit (white led)) and the other is not connected (not making the circuit (red led)), so swapping the two blacks over will make the red circuit and break the white circuit giving you a red glow

The footwell lights are not very bright on the Golf, at 100% they are the same brightness as the ones in my old CC were at 20%

Some LEDs are better than others ime.  I've found the ones with larger smd tabs (squares) much better in terms of output than the ones with small smd tabs, even though the latter may have more tabs.

So for example these

better than these ime

The other option is to try a hair clip, the type your gran would have had but the one think you don't want to do is pull too hard because if you pull the wire out without the pin then it is much harder to remove the pin.

Rather than taking the pins out and it not working, have you tried with a piece of wire joining what pins you are trying to join first to save you going to this bother in case it doesn't work?
