wandering idle
« on: 08 May 2003, 11:40 »
morning all,

Can anyone shed some light on something that's been bothering me for a while now? When starting from cold (and a little from warm), the revs will swing from 350(ish) to 1200 and eventually settle at normal idle. also, when deccelerating to stop, the revs will drop right down until you get into the next gear; but this morning it managed to stall completely.
I've been told this is down to the engine temp sender(?) or the idle control valve (?). Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers!

Hi,

I just had my car back from a vw specialist for exactly the same fault. There were several things at fault......
1) the idle stablisation valve was defective.
2)the vacuum pipe from my brake servo was split (apparantly that caused the timing to do strange things)
3) the spring on the airflow sensor needed adjusting.
The car seems absolutely fine now so i'm well pleased. I was only charged 30 quid for the stablisation valve and 15 quid for the labour.
Hope that helps

well it's going into the garage for a new rocker cover gasket next week, so I'll ask them to have a look at the stabilisation valve as well. Did yours need replacing or did they fix it?? I've heard that the valves are around ?130 to replace?

I don't think it's the brake servo pipes - I've got an Ecotek CB-26P plugged in the the inlet manifold and it's been fine before and after that went in...

I think they just swapped mine with another one from a 16v that they had in the workshop. I'm not too sure about how much they are new, but i have just seen that someone is selling one on the 'parts for sale section' of this forum for 35 pounds.
