Title: Sat Nav Update?
Post by: Tally Wacker on 27 May 2019, 17:58
Hi
Can anyone please point me in the direction of an "idiot's" step by step guide to updating my Discover Media Sat Nav?
Thanks

You can download the latest maps from here;-

https://webspecial.volkswagen.de/vwinfotainment/int/en/index/downloads/maps-download#/

Which maps to download will depend on which head unit you have. You can use VW's download manager that will also tell you whether or not your current maps are the latest ones, or you can do what I did, which was to download them directly onto my PC hard drive and then copy them onto the VW SD card. Remember though to remove copy protection and to make a backup of your existing maps just in case it goes pear shaped. Put copy protection back when finished.

If you have a Nav Pro you can also update them via car net if you have a decent enough internet connection.

I don't think anyone in history has managed to update maps via carnet. I've tried a few times but always default back to downloading from the VW site.

Thanks guys.
I've looked on Google but can't find the VW Download Manager... any links please?

The link Guzzle gave above works fine for me.

Thanks guys.
I've looked on Google but can't find the VW Download Manager... any links please?

It's called DiscoverCare. If you choose your car and then the head unit, it will be the first item at the top after you've clicked through via the link above.

I had problems with DiscoverCare, it would only go so far then I got an error message saying it couldn't copy files so I reverted to just downloading maps to my PC then dragging and dropping files to the SD card.

Looking at that link (which works fine for me too) the downloads you get to, after selecting car model and nav type, say last updated 10/01/2018. We used to get 2 updates a year, in May and November, so, has this changed?
Title: Re: Sat Nav Update?
Post by: Guzzle on 27 May 2019, 20:23
The last updates were October last year, so in theory we're due another update any time now. They've given the date as mmddyy like the crazy yanks instead of ddmmyy.

Oh, thanks Guzzle, that explains it. I'll watch out for the next one.

I found updating a nightmare and eventually gave up and went into the dealership. They agreed to do it for me, took out the SD card for a few days then told me all done. Was it? No, they'd wiped it. They even admitted they preferred to tell customers to DIY as it usually went wrong!

So then they gave me a brand new SD card and uploaded onto that. But did it work? Like heck no!

Eventually they bought  (with a degree of grumbling) a new VW ready-loaded SD card which did finally work,  but it begs the question: if the dealership can't sucessfully update an SD card, how do they expect a customer to?????

OK - onto my question: I've checked the version (navigation/settings/advanced/version) but what it displays does not seem to match any version numbers I've seen online. Can anyone decipher?

Never had issues updating maps.

Download new maps and extract using 7Zip or WinZip to a folder on your PC.

Remove card from car and insert to PC. Copy card to new folder you make on desktop just in case there is a problem with new maps so you can copy them back onto the card.

Format the card. Copy and Paste new maps from the folder to the card.

Insert card back into car turn on and the new maps should load.

That is how I have always done it and not had issues.

Yes, probably not as straightforward as it could be, but I’ve always managed it OK, following the procedure above. You have to be careful and patient, but it works. Honestly, it’s not rocket science.

I recently checked, using the DiscoverCare App on my desktop and found that there is a new 2019 update. Downloaded it to an SD card (took several hours) inserted the SD card into slot 1 in the car and loaded the new version to the car (took about 25 minutes).

OK, I'm familiar with the process, having updated the map several times, but it really is easy once you get to grips with Discover Care which isn't exactly intuitive.

Hi there, can I ask the Mr Thicky question, what do you mean by formatting the card?

Hoping to update my nav for the first time provided my OH lets me use her laptop!

Formatting a card removes all the data and prepares the card to receive new data. Important to copy all the old data to your laptop, before you format, in case anything goes wrong!

Good to hear some of you manage this without difficulty - but begs the question of why the dealership could not!

As for my question, Can anyone decipher?

Thanks for the explanation  Unfortunately whilst being a bit wiser I've no idea what I'm supposed to do :embarrassed: I'll have to google it.

Sounds like you will need help from your OH, as well as the laptop! Don’t worry, it’s all basic computer stuff. 😁

You're not wrong! I've googled it now and feel better prepared. The tricky bit remains though, persuading her to loosen her grip on her laptop

I’m an IT Professional - but I haven’t tackled a Nav upgrade yet. To be honest I may not bother if it’s going to be just like the day job (ie constant agro and hassle).  I much prefer using Waze anyway. Just a shame it can’t use the Active Info Display.

It's an easy process, download, unzip and move to memory card. A bit of patience and decent internet connection help but I've never had any issues what so ever. Anyone who has had issues hasn't followed the instructions correctly.

I shall be giving it a go this week, I hope you're right  Mind you, it can't be harder than changing the headlight bulbs

Could one of you tech savvy members help me out with a couple of questions please before I mess up my nav update?

I want to be sure I'm looking at the correct system in my car, the options for the car are 'until 2015' or 'from 2015'. Mine is a May 2015 car and the unit looks like the one in the 'until 2015' but it makes more sense that it should be the 'from 2015'. So which one is it? Hopefully the 'until' as they have been recently updated.

Then the instructions say it could take several hours to download, is that right? I've got reasonably fast fibre broadband, will it really take that long? And if it does, can you just leave it to it as I think I'd rather get lost than sit by the computer for that long!

Thanks

Yeah start the download, go away, have a cuppa... and another cuppa, pop out, get some shopping, walk the dog, watch something on TV, go to bed, get up and then repeat while it unzips and writes to the memory card/stick.

It takes ages.

I expect 'until 2015' will be for MIB1 units and 'from 2015' will be the MIB2 units.

Mine took around an hour or so to download if I remember correctly.

Looks like mine is MIB1, 5.8" screen, I'll double check. Hope it does only take a hour...

That doesn't sound good! Oh well, fingers crossed Guzzle is closer, it needs doing since it's on the maps that were with the car!

I would say up to 2015, too.

You are dealing with quite a chunk of data, so downloading, unzipping etc., are going to take a while . From memory, I think downloading, unzipping and uploading to the sd card have each taken around 45 minutes. Could be wrong, but it’s not stupid long times. Be patient and don’t bale until you’re absolutely sure the process has failed. If you’ve followed the process correctly, you shouldn’t have a problem.

Mib1 data on 5.8" screen should be far quicker than nav pro as the map update data is only around 14 instead of 26 gb

Thanks both, that's encouraging and I really need to get it sorted. I'm away next week so it'll have to wait for a day off after then. The website shows the MIB1 maps were updated a few days ago so no excuses now!

Yes, some older platforms are not updated yet.
Took about 45 minutes to download (Discover Pro); 25 minutes to unzip, but more than 40 minutes to copy on the SD card...

They're obviously throttling the bandwidth for some reason. Probably allocating more of it to those wanting to download sales brochures ;)

EDIT works fine with no md5 file

Updates for all versions seem to be there now. Just completed mine and all is fine.

The first time I downloaded the 7zip file it wouldn’t extract. First problem I’ve ever had updating nav data. The second attempt downloaded and extracted as it should. The whole process took a while - an hour and ten minutes for the download on a fast fibre line, about forty minutes for the extraction and thirty five minutes to copy the data to the SD card, which worked when tested in the car.

I noticed that my March 2019 car had version 9 loaded. The new version is 11, so my car came with an out of date satnav.

Can anyone help me understand what maps I should be downloading? The box in my car says Europe 1 (v9) but there’s lots of other options (around 8-10 different map packs) on the discover care menu. The v10 maps in Europe 1 only seems to cover the uk and a few other European countries (around 6gb total size) whereas the current SD card I have has the whole of Europe on it (around 13gb in total).
Title: Re: Sat Nav Update?
Post by: Talk-torque on 22 June 2019, 18:47
Well we have the same car, so the same system, unless you have Nav Pro, and the whole of Europe at around 13GB, but version 11, is what I downloaded, so it is there.
