Noisy Fuel Pump

I've a 97 GTI and the fuel pump is now getting extremely noisy ... is it on its way out or could there be dirt in the fuel filter, straining the pump?  Although I've look for the filter, in vain.

Any suggestions?

It may well be on the way out, as for the filter, it should be just in front of the tank possibly under a cover.

The Fuel Pump was on its way out.  I replaced it and the filter.

Petrol is a very nasty substance, especially when the tank is 3/4's full!!
