Title: Archie's A4 Wagon
Post by: archie837 on 12 June 2016, 10:24
So after a couple of years of rolling about in a mk4 anni and fixing everything with it, I came into some money and thought it was time to get something a bit newer with some carrying capacity.

(http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh231/archie837/7EC38303-093C-423C-B1DF-B979EF38313D.jpg) (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/archie837/media/7EC38303-093C-423C-B1DF-B979EF38313D.jpg.html)

It's a 2008 3.0 TDI V6 and is probably the nicest thing I've ever owned.

The guy I bought it from has looked after it fairly well and serviced it every 10k, valeted every week etc. he also specced it up with the bang and olufsen 14 speaker system which is ace.

When we picked it up he also said he'd had it mapped which was nice as it was the first thing I was going to do.

There are a few things it needs - he ran this on crap budget tyres. I've replaced the rears with some rainsports which has made a massive difference, but has highlighted the alignment is cock as it gets a right wander on at speed. Also changing the rears has highlighted the fronts are bad and really noisy.

Really happy with it at the moment, just need to sort these little bits now

Quick update on this.

I changed the rear tyres and fitted some rainsports to it. Big mistake as the car now wanders badly at high speed. Did have the alignment done so it is straight. General consensus is the tread pattern is causing it to grab on each side which the 4wd doesn't like. Will try some Audi marked dunlops and see what happens.

Did a trip to Wales and this was perfect for it. Loaded it up with 2 dogs in the back and off we went. Set the cruis to 80 with a couple of higher / lower patches of speed and averaged 44mpg. Plus got out the other end without feeling sore or stiff - it is absolutely brilliant at mile munching and the bigger engine is just so effortless.

I also changed out the air and pollen filters as they were filthy and had the air con done too.

Next thing to fit is the LED bulb kit I got as I can't stand the pissy yellow colour of the interior lights.

So hopefully a set of new tyres should cure the wandering and give me back the mega planted feel I had before.

Weird how thats affected the handling

I got RainSports all round on the A6 and it grips and goes without issue  :undecided:

What have you got on the front?

I had an issue with Goodyears on the front and RainSports on the back of my A3; going around corners the TC would in and brake the inside front wheel

it is a different read pattern on on the front so I think it is a case of the rear is gripping more than the front.

I don't know whether to try rainsports on the front as well and see if it smooths it all out by having a matching set?

It's the backend it really wants to let loose - had some scary moments after coming off roundabouts at speed.

Swap front to back and see if the problem moves??

Quattro ideally needs a complete matching set

aye I think i'll order some more for the front this weekend and take a punt. they need changing anyway and if yours are ok / fine wise I guess it is a case of the rears are trying to overtake the front.

Got half the led's done yesterday on me lunch and can't believe how much nicer it feels now - proper crisp light in the cabin as a pose to dull yellow

should be able to finish the rest off on lunch today

Sorted. Front tyres matched to the back and the car is planted again now. No little wandering or movement in the steering wheel. Mega happy

Also got the rest of the led lighting inside done now and it's almost too bright! Retina searing in the dark, but it looks much much better than the pissy yellow colour before.
