Having trouble fitting new radio unit
« on: 04 October 2003, 11:13 »
Bought a new car radio cd unit for my fathers 97 Golf .

But he is having trouble finding out how to remove the original radio unit, Can any one say where the clips and screws are that he should be looking for .

Thankyou in advance

Whats the standard radio in the car?

I am thinking sony as they were factory fit around '95 onwards. Let me know.

Most radios have little slots that need special keys inserted to release the little lock pins that hold the radio in place. You can buy these release keys in halfords or use what I do a snapped in half junior hacksaw blade that works a treat.

A lot of the newer radios with face-offs have got a plastic trim around them, pop this off (it's a snap-on/snap-off type) and you should see the holes to put the removal keys.
I don't own this anymore - I just can't be arsed to change the picture

sorted it......it has three screws  on the plastic cover behind the clip off front. then a catch at the right hand side then one at the top which need a small flat bladed screwey. there where no places to put a pin.

but my problem was broken wires in the rear door about 1cm from the connector that goes into the door pillar.

I always find the worse thing about getting the stereo out is trying to get the wires back in after and push the radio in without trapping the wires

A thing about getting the wires in easier.

Try tieing a rope or wire around the harnesses through the opening to the floor.  With one hand you'll push the radio in and with the other you pull (Gently!) the wires in.  After, you can tie off the rope, tuck it away, or cut it short.
