Cutting out on warm up
« on: 29 January 2003, 16:19 »
Hello. I've got at 1981, 1.6 GTi and during the warm up phase, every 15 - 30 seconds (it's not regular) there is a relay clicking down by the fusebox and the engine almost dies and then it clicks again and the engine picks back up again.
Once warmed up it doesn't seem to happen, but the tickover then increases to about 1500rpm.
I'm guessing at the fuel pump relay. Does anyone else have any ideas on this?

Thanks.

I think you're guessing right.......fuel pump relay. Its the only thing down there that I can think of that would do that.
My guess is its on its way out (common failure), however it might be worth a quick check to make sure its not getting damp in there.

These things always seem to happen when the weather is at its worst >:(
Good luck.

Hi grrr, I remember on my D reg Mk2, I had a similar problem, it turned out that a small airpipe at the top, back of the engine had came loose! It may not apply to you, but worth checking out just incase!

had this prob. myself ? change the realy first if that does not fix it you will need a new fuel pump my mk1 done this and eventually i traced it to the pump itself, allthough it can be a few things pressure reg fault can cause your pump to give up so can sh!t in the tank blocking it and the fuel reg , get under neath and take of a few fuel lines, the first one i took of was the one from the pump side to the reg to see if the reg was getting fuel and hey presto no fuel going to reg ,all electrical contacts were working pump was buzzing but not getting enough fuel thru and causing relay to click in and out , but like you mention for some reason when the car had warmed up a bit it seemed ok! :-[ :-[
regards kevin (best of luck)

Thanks guys, It all seems to be working fine now. I'm not quite sure what it was but a clean up of the relays and some better weather have solved it. All I've got to do is get it through the MOT   :'(
