Manufacturers will usually offer various incentives to help keep sales buoyant as a model nears the end of its life, such as producing a limited edition run-out model, increasing the standard spec, low or zero rate finance, free servicing etc, etc. VW discontinuing some models is also likely to have had an impact on sales volumes (e.g. stopping production of 3 door Golf R and making the R with DSG transmission only, stopping production of the non-performance version of the Golf GTI).
