Cooooool!... loks about done, sort the motor out and its a perfect rat rod!

looks can be decieving old bean

digging it out at the weekend so will get some better snaps - was gonna be all mysterious like and just add cryptic photos but I'm too excited!

It needs *ahem*
A set of doors - currently in the post
heater channels
floor pans
some repairs tothe fron inner wings
an engine!!!!
Another roof so we can figure out the roof chop
figuring out the wheels - whether to keep the 17" steelies and get em banded or run some muscle car wheels.
Interior

and more than likely a whole host of other bits, but the good stuff is it's already had the rot cut out of it.

nice, looks like a fun project!

those wheels would be quite cool a bit wider, and you could run better sized tyres. would you have to band them inwards though? looks  like as they are they will be close to the arch edge  :undecided:
Title: Re: Archie - project volksraaarghhh Holy sh1t I can't weld yet!
Post by: archie837 on 10 August 2010, 10:45
I'm not sure on the banding to be honest - might not use these wheels as finding another set to band may be massively difficult! They're early early, like 30's ford steelies. They would only go to 4" wide on the front and 6" on the back. Thinking of switching to 15"s but the problem we have is because it's an early beetle it's got wide 5 stud fitment on the wheels.

Been told to expect to pay about 100 a corner....

Post by: archie837 on 10 August 2010, 11:51
Yeah chopped and channeled. Original idea was to get it 36" from the ground up to the top of the roof.  Might not fit into it though...

Gonna run 15's. Probs 15 x 8 on the front and 15 x 10 on the back

I has doors!!!!

Absoloutely stunned! No rot on them anywhere. Workshop man says they're one of the best sets he's seen which is a bonus. Only problem is the doorcatch strap mountingamabobbit is hitting on the door so will remake that.

You can't really tell in this photo but it's got a partially smoothed dash in. I'll finish that off wen I can get to it. It should only take about 2 seconds to make and weld in.

not much now. Just needs some bolts changing, then sling it in for Mot. If I get on with it, use it till the winter and then strip it for paint. If I don;t get on with it, strip it and paint it black and sell it!

Yeah it's some pretty savage work needing doing to it, but think it's just general stuff that they all pretty much need and thinking about it, it's nearly 50 years old (it's a 64) and I don't think it's ever been looked after, so hopefully once it's done it'll be solid and actually worth some money. I bought it pretty cheap - don;t think I've slung a grand into it yet including the cost of the car.

Looking forward to starting now!

Went down today to make a go of it

First floor out in about 20 minutes

Took about 8 cutting discs to get to this stage

The flipped it on it's side to start splitting the spot welds and get the last bits of floor off
(http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af318/archie_837/901bce03.jpg)

Was splitting them by hand down the length of the spine with a hammer and chisel

Then got to the end and had about 4 layers of panel in 1 go. Took about an hour to get off

Pasenger side is all done and ready for the floor to drop in and weld up. Pics below show the difference in sides. get to do it all again next time to clean up the drivers side - Split all the spot welds by hand, carefully cut out the awkward bits and then used a grinding disc to get it all smooth.

Went down today with the intention of getting the floors in ... I now know why a full off body resto costs so much. Cleaned up the underside and it's pretty rot free which is a massive bonus. and now it's all prepped to be coated underneath when the pans go in!

After taking off 50 years of muck!

Had to do a bit more trimming and adjust the pans slightly, but the drivers side just drops straight in now which is ace! Going down tuesday to start making it solid again

Fresh pans and trial fit

Haven't updated this for a while.

tackled the beam / axle adjusters today. these allow you to dial in the ride height you're after by dropping the front end.

Spensive CSP adjusters, worth it though
(http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af318/archie_837/121a71ac.jpg)

They;re grooved each side and go together like so
(http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af318/archie_837/68e6e8dc.jpg)

one manky beam
(http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af318/archie_837/3b62dd6d.jpg)

Starting to clean it up
(http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af318/archie_837/16ac2e26.jpg)

Axle adjuster goes like so -

We needed to cut a slot so the threaded bit can spin the leaves round to allow the ride height to change
(http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af318/archie_837/7460800d.jpg)

Slots cut
(http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af318/archie_837/ec623195.jpg)

With the adjusters bolted on
(http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af318/archie_837/c0afdb81.jpg)

The beam had crimps / dents on the top and bottom holding the inner beam / leaves in place. We cut these out to allow the inner beam to spin freely and I then made some fill plates / bits and Mr Welder welded em in.

Just need to clean the welds up and jobs a good un. On the 17" steels with quite tall profile tyres it left about 2 to 3" under the beam so pretty low. I'm going to run dropped spindles as well, so expecting this to lay the beam on the ground.

had a good day today as well. Feels like I'm not making progress, but making one off bits and doing a proper job, with only one day a week is the reason for that. Soo went down today for a play. reshimmed one side of the floor as it wasn;t square with the oppositte side. This would mean the body wouldn;t sit square. Also finished off one side of the jacking point as well.

Slicing the back for a rejiggle

made 8 of these!

Looks much better now. Won't be on it next weekend as I'm in portugal with work. It's a hard life sometimes.

We've sseen that one before lol. Ridiculous!!! This ones gonna be low and have a chop, but not mega radical.

Had a look at some ofthe roofchops and if you take too much out the windows in the back go a weird shape and the roof goes flat so doesn't look too good. We've managed to locate Oje over in Newbury so will have a chat with him about chopping it nice!

Just noticed this. :afro: spent many months welding floor pans, heater channels and closing it all up before just leaving the projects because of running out of money twice.. Soon learnt to weld doing that!

Always wanted to get a beetle on the road after switching to watercooled as they were already working. Gonna keep an eye on this.

Ive done beam adjusters before but the ones i used, you had to cut the whole section out to weld the adjuster in. What's the extension piece do on the front of the frame head?

Yeah man should be Sunday going down. Could possibly need a hand lining the shell up and stuff. Will be cool to see you.

T-shirt - it is just that! It extends the length of the car about 10 inches and also lowers by an inch and a half. Because this is going for the hot rod sort of look it won't have arches on it.

I am really really excited about the next stage!!!

You must have fitted Sway Way type ones which requires axle tube be cut, in the past I've just bought a whole new beam with adjusters fitted as the original beam was usually shot anyway.  Extension piece is to push the wheels forward for that hotrod stance.

Great project by the way.

It was a good few years ago.  The beam was in good nick.  Not looked at the aircooled stuff recently, Does that not cause clearance problems with the wings? Or does the front need changing too?

The GP's boring to watch!

Nah understand. Probably won't be there till 11 by the time I pull my ar5e outta bed in fleet.

Yeah I looked at the sway away type, but got suckered in by these as they were CSP branded lol.

That black one looks ok, sitting high on the back but pretty cool still. There's the black one on red steels doing the show circuit at the moment in the uk. Think he's done all the rod and dub shows and there was a pic in golf + this/last month. Don't really like that one, but he seems to be getting exposure everywhere which is good I guess.

Mines gonna be coolerthough!!

Maybe.

Post by: archie837 on 07 July 2011, 13:42
That's it. Was looking closer and talking to the guy. Right - this is all my opinion and personal

Wheels are too small on the front, perfect look is in line or above the top of the bonnet.
It's on radial tyres - crossplys look a million times better.
The roofchop is heavy on the back, so has made the rear windows a really weird shape.
A beetles the hardest thing to roofchop due to it curving front to back and side to side and when looking at this one it had a few flat spots in it.
The rear wheels are cambered loads - standard territory when lowering a beetle, but doesn't suit the rod look.
He's still got an engine lid on it, but no rear arches so the shape is odd at the back.
And it's satin black! All that work and no paint!

This is all personal to me though and I am having a lot of help to do mine, which the owner of the one above didn't have from talking to him. But this is slowly slowly catchy monkey.

Not sure yet. Either black/gold/White, but maybe black/deep satin red with black sheen and gold detailing.

Was talking earlier on about pearly White with blue and silver detailing but knocked that on the head quick.

Good day today. Built the pan up to trial fit the shell and see how the wheels fit with the loweredness. We tried 15's on it and they make the car sit how I want, but look daft. Tried on the 17's and they look great, but the car sits high, so going to get some dropped spindles which should drop the front another 2.5 inches down. Anyway - pics!

beam on

15's on and looking good - rear of the pan isn;t chocked up

rears trial fitted. Need to do a gearbox raise to stop the wheels on the back cambering like so -

15's on, sitting low but wheels look cr@p

Yes. Yes it was. Sunday task was making someone a car for a stag do for a guy down the pub. It had a big rubber dong for the gear change and was going barbie pink......

On the orange car think they are spot lights. Didn't get a good look though

Achieved not a lot today. There's a lathe coming tomorrow so the beetle is now relegated to outside. Not really impressed, but not a lot I can do about it. Also means we'll be able to make stuff up inhouse now. Which is good. hung my doors to try and make it a bit more weatherproof. one side fits lurvvly, but the otherside is a bit of a dog because the heater channel is missing out of it. Jb next week is to get the body straight and brace it all so I can cut it to pieces for the new heater channels. Anyway Pics!

I'm REALLY looking forward to doing the bodystuff. Should be mega mega fun times. Ifs annoying working 9-5 because I reckon if I went for it I could have shell solid in a week. Spread over 1 day a week it works out to a month and a half :-/ .

Roofchops gonna be hard. I need to get another 2 roofs yet and we are going to try and keep the metal sliding sunroof as well. If we manage it there won't be another (as far as I'm aware) in the world to be done with one.

Yeah. Chopping it will be hard anyway lol. Not sure if the original size of it can be kept as the whole top will be smaller, so may have to make up a new on that's a bit smaller.

Good day today. lots of socialising and getting stuff done. Managed to get one side of the heater channels out so if the floor is 50% of the work and the heater channels is 50% of the work, but you need to do 4 things so I did 25% of 50% of the work today so tied in the body is 62.5% of the way there? for now anyway. Managed to get the doors tacked in to make the shell sturdier - had to jack up the side which didn;t fit nice and ratchet strapped it tight and tacked it in. Anyway pics!

Title: Re: Archies Volksrod - The sunday sessions
Post by: archie837 on 01 August 2011, 13:47
Haha! Yeah loadsa work, but that's what happens when buying cheap I guess. To be fair though once the channels are in that's the majority of cutting and welding done. It's not having rear seats so will curve a flat sheet and weld it in so that's the body in solid.

Should hopefully only take a couple of weeks to get the channels in. Then will raise the gearbox and have found a local guy whose going to attempt to band the steels for me.

Had a good day today. My dad armed me with some nasty looking knife this morning which is ideal for butchering metal / spot welds, so spent the drive hoping I didn't get pulled lol. Got down there and got the last of the old channel out easy with the new "tool". Had to trim off the edge of the new channel to get it to fit, but the outcome of today basically resulted in both sides of the car level, new channel tacked in and the first bit of bracing of the body. Anyway pics!

Cheers guys. The Resto bits are nearly done so it's almost time to start on the exciting stuff, so posts should get more interesting, hopefully pretty quickly!

Once the channels are in, I need to stick in the repair sections at the front, then we're going to channel the body down. Need to repair the a posts, then going to make a couple of mounts to raise the gearbox up to get rid of the neggy camber.

Some tool on e38 has decided he wants to buy a beetle purely on the basis of how much camber he can get. I am going to do everything I can to not have it. TO BLOW THEIR PUNY MINDS!

Then roofchop it, weld in a curved section at the back, decide on an engine, make some seat runners, decide on some seats, finish the dash, prep it, paint it. Figure out the wheel set up etc etc etc lol.

Had a good day today. Nipped up a mates shop to drop some money off and see his new bike he's finished then pulled a shift on the beetle. Got fed up by climbing in the back so took a door off and braced the shell some more. Then got the other heater channel out and new one bolted in. Just need to trim the bulkhead and then will tack it in, fully weld both sides, then start to channel the body. Anyway pics!

Ideally you should trim the panel not the car. But it looks like the car has rusted that high anyway. Also looks as if the inside panel is rusted too. You should have treated that before welding in the new panel. Its harder to do when everything is closed up.

AFAIK it's only being made solid to aid in then cutting it up for a roof chop and a body drop. Once that's done final rust removal will take place.

Post by: archie837 on 31 August 2011, 19:46
Yep. This ain't no normal Resto lol. Not treating the rust inside as that panel will be getting trimmed back and having a rolled piece of metal put in, instead of a normal firewall.

Then yeah the body's being channelled so more cutting of stuff out.

Need to do the other side and the repair piece will get trimmed as it's easier to put in a square piece than a triangle piece.

It's all coming apart again. I know what you're saying about it being harder to treat once closed up and appreciate the advice. The mate whose helping me do this has done this for the last 15+ years and is unphased by it.

haven't touched it in a while as a mates rod was going in for sva. Because the commercial sva is ending this month it all got a bit stressed so I stayed away to give them some space. The rod failed on some small bits but they have 6 months for the retest - so full speed beetlings ahead!

I got the drivers door repair post in on sunday so the door can hang good and proper as there wasn't much left of it. Now the door in solid, more of the body attached to the heater channel making it a bit stiffer again (ooer missus)

So! this week will do the other side which isn;t so rusty so should be a quicker job. Once these are done I need to redo a rear quarter panel and can get the front quarter panels in which should be most of the resto work done. Then we can pull it in the workshop and fully weld it and make it solid. Work on raising the gear box to get it back on its wheels and look to channel the body!

the resto stuff has been a bit longhaul but the fun bits are coming quickly!

cool day today! redid my rear quarter panel which i tooled up and got one front quarter in as well as the other side prepped - but basically one side is all finished! Bar the seam welding but it is pretty much there. Also means We can think about getting the box in and getting it stanced then start on the body. This month should ramp up loads of speed and good stuff to start happening.

Also. Those inner wing panels should be chopped along the bottom if new heater channels are used. The lip should be cut off and welded half way up the heater channel, so as not to create a water trap.
Title: Re: Archies Volksrod - []o\_|_/o[]
Post by: archie837 on 08 November 2011, 07:23
yes!

but not in this instance for now.

we are chopping the bottom 6 inches back out to channel the body down, so this isn't the final place for all the panels yet. The only reason for putting heater channels in is due to the body being so out of shape it meant we could get the body square to the pan.

Forgot to say got the last panel tacked in a couple of weeks back, so now all the Resto stuff is done! Just needs a day welding it all up and then I can chop it to bits again. Last week started on my gearbox raise. I'm gonna run decked, but don't want camber on the rear wheels so we worked out it needs to be lifted by about 4 inches. I spent all day Sunday chopping 6mm thick plate up which took ages, but the basic shapes there now. Also threw some left over paint on to try and stop any more surface rust getting it.

Decide on seats
Make a bulkhead/engine firewall

How do you get on with no guards over the wheels? Does it pass mot?

Mine will have guards of some sort, but it's not an mot thing. It's a vosa / traffic police rule that it must have covered tread of a substantial amount.

As far as I'm aware anyway.

A good productive day today! Made that plate look like something and practiced my welding. Lovely and blobby and burning holes in bits haha!

Bending the top section

Sticking it on

Tomorrow will finish it off!

Didn't manage to get It back on it's wheels today which was a shame, but I can pull it into the booth next week as no jobs are on, which means I can put it together and finish off the welding in the comfort of a well lit area. Finished off the rear mount today and by Jove it fits! Bolts into the car with no drama at all. Started on my front mount too, but need to getthe box in to make sure it's sitting level.

I'm going to run some edging on the rear mount too to finish it off and make it a bit more rigid.

Exciting things next week!!

Fun day today = stance fail. Putting it back on it's wheels threw up an overlook on my part. By raising the box it didn't leave the spring plates with enough travel to move h
Which made the rear wheels have loads of posi camber.

How are you getting around the positive camber?  Did you turn the spring plates on the torsion bars?

Do you still intend to channel the body down?

Getting there now  :afro:
Title: Re: Archies Volksrod - []o\_|_/o[]
Post by: archie837 on 03 January 2012, 12:59
At the moment it's got some temporary raising plates which are bolted to the spring plates and hold the driveshafts 4"higher. It's only like that so it will roll and can let us see how it's going to sit.

We are looking at doing some sort of inboard shock setup on the rears, possibly.

Still got some negative camber, but it does need to come up slightly. I want some dropped spindles on the front as well.

Looking to do a 3"channel on it, nothing mega, but we are going to roofchop it first I think. Next step is fully welding and trimming the panels.

Nope. Going to try and keep it. Could be difficult as the easiest way is to cut the middle out of one and another into 4. Then weld the inside back in.

Aye. Problem with this one was it came in about 10 years ago as the inner arches on the front were gone. Repair panels for each side are / were about £400 a side, so more than the car was worth. Got sown second hand ones, but the guy who cutthem out used a cutting saw so allthe edges are fooked and no good, so its just sat rotting.

But! I'm having the roof. The turquoise one is having the floors as those are solid. My mates red one is having the IRS out of it and the heater channels are going into a red one.

I could probably dig out a roof chop how to from Custon Car.

You just need to put in some temporary bracing across the body then work out the angles of the pillars.
Simple really.
Somebody local to you would be Valley Gas, they are willing to give advice.

First day back on it in what feels like months. Uncovered her and Shes getting a lovely dusting of the orange from being out side.
Started off today by trimming back the rear arches for a bt of clearance and to do away with where the arches would mount. No need for them on this so just extra flappy bits of metal.
I then sat there and practiced my welding. Only the third time I've done it. A bit lumpy and burnt through a few times, but nothing some time with a grinder won't cure.

I've got one panel left to get in. Once that's done i want to get it sat right and spend some time on the doors making sure they're a good fit.

I've got a few days off before starting a new job so was going to throw some money at this - the gods must have heard though as I've now had to replace the power steering rack on the daily golf, so no play money this month now.

Carried on practicing my welding though - started to click today so hopefully with some more practicing it should get a lot better. Hopefully. Welded up the front quarter panel today. Needs a bit of work as it kept blowing holes in the original metal, but will do for now.

Ahh see now, just zoomed In a bit, thought you'd gone at it like a mad one and chopped loads off, but it's just the shape of the wheel well (is it called) to the sills etc

Yeah ur gonna need some guards on of some sort for road use, but if u were ingenious which you clearly are you could make the guards detach for shows and private land! :) :)

Uncovered it for the first time in a while as a mate was having a photo shoot done on his audi wagon for audi driver and we hijacked one of the barns. I've also been in Edinburgh with work and came back to a nice little present.

Me present!

Managed to get them for £80, which is not bad considering they are about 150 to 200 new. I didn't have the money so my dad sprung for them and I owe him some time, but massively owe him as he has saved me a load in the long run.

By fitting these it should allow me to run at the current height it's sitting. Currently the front arms are pretty much upright, so have no travel at all. The dropped spindles should drop by 2.5" which will allow us to wind the beam adjusters back up. Although it will be amusing to fit them and put the pan on the floor!

So fitted my dropped spindles today. They basically lower the car by another 2.5" and widen the track slightly. I needed to do this as even though it sat low the front control / suspension arms were basically upright when they should have been level. By fitting these I can now wind the beam adjusters up and have it sat right.

I was expecting it to be a right ball ache due to the 50 years of grime, but it wasn;t a bad job. It essentiall entailed pulling of the spindles, stripping the drum to unbolt the spindle and then drift out the bushes so split the original spindles from the carriers / mounts. Then rebuild!

First side off

Where it widens it, it makes it look a bit ungainly, but I like it - almost looks gasserish
(http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af318/archie_837/42d92d53.jpg)

Good day today. From this we have found it needs about a 2.5" channel so nothing major, but it will make the side profile a lot nicer.

Just need to get paid today and then I can sort the rear shocks. Feeling the love for it again!

Had a fairly good day today started on smoothing one of the doors down and my rear shocks turned up. Because we are going to suicide the doors no need for the front hinges anymore. I stared to drill out one of the plugs which held it in, but it was taking forever so just cut them off in the end. I then cut out the original door handle recess and made up a filler plate to go in. It's a bit rough, but with a skim of filler will be lovely.

Now the rear shocks I got are for a pit bike. But seem ideal as they are eyelets at the top and bottom, adjustable damping and height adjustable. All for £50. The idea is to use these to dial in the ride height a bit better than just on the splines. I'm a bit unhappy with the company who sent them as the springs are supposed to be black, but came White.

Here you can see it next to the old koni red that were on originally.

All I need to do now is sort the rear driveshaft raise plates and that should be the rear end sorted!

About 50 each. Not sure how useful they will be though.

Not a lot achieved because the weather has been sh!te so far this year, but today this happened.

Not half as bad as I though it would be, although where the transits back breaks it did deck out and that's where it stayed.

Yep into a new unit with some of the American car guys, but only a mile down the road. Just means now I have inside space with 24hr access.

No more stopping play because the rain started, which is nice!

Channel the body first I think and probably more than the initial 3 inches.

Sorted out how the rear end sits by fitting those spring plates. Wheels are now sat perfect - slightly posi camber due to no engine and interior. Got someone to stand on it and it made the wheels sit dead straight. But now the body is massively high.

Ah that guy is on the volksrod uk forum. We met him at wheels day up here. Turned out as he got off the ferry he split one of the landrover bags on the back so was driving it chocked up on a bit of wood to get home.

Yeah - if you see the really well thought out and measured black tape line thats roughly precisely where it might be chopped to possibly.

Ha!

Have a new gearbox for the golf coming so should get mobile again. Payda ina  couple of weeks so I can get the box for bracing the shell up to chop bottom out.

Cheers though! Trying to stay stoked on it so stuff happens.

Pictureless update.

Chopped the box section to size, but couldn't stick it on as me new welding lid was in the post. Got it when I got back home.

Also cut out my seat runners from the floor pan.

Not saying I'm hoping to channel the body next week as whenever i do life gets in the way, so shhh.

Bricked myself massively today! Put some more bracing in the body to hold it steady, but ran out of welding wire.

Then took the leap of faith and cut the body off the heater channels. This is to channel it / body drop it and will work out around a 3" drop.

All was going fine and I started to cut the b pillar at the bottom and nearly passed out from not breathing! Gave it a tug and bricked myself as the body nearly twisted off! Quickly put it back together and chopped the other side.

I got the body free and then realised there was no way I was lifting the body by myself! Raced off and found 2 willing helpers. Got the body off and up onto the bench. Praying my bracing is strong enough and that it's not going to fall off!

Plan is to tidy up the cuts, drop it back onto the Heater channels to make sure all is well and stick it in!

Super stoked, super nervous, super wobbly! AHHHHHH!!! I'll probably pass out at roof chop stage.

I knew you'd like that.

Went down in the week and trimmed my pillars so they were the same length and also cut out the front cowling as this rests on a curved section on the chassis, so needs to be moved higher up. Cleaned up one of the heater channels, but couldn't be bothered to fight the other one into place.

Once that's done the body can go on for a trial fit which is exciting!

The bit what I dun gone cut out

That front panel is the cowling in front of your feet. If you chop down the pillars but not the cowling the car body won't fit back on as the front of the body have more panel than the sides.

You can just about make out the front quarter panels either side of it.

So! Haven't done much for a while due to being in an outta jobs and in an outta home. But been taken on permanently somewhere and me with swmbo have settled in to our own place now.

I squared up the 3 months rent I owed on the unit, tidied up all the sh!t which wasn't mine in my bay and could actually get to the thing for the first time in months.

I quickly whipped the body off again, put the steering box and rods on and tidied up the heater channels.

I also raised the front suspension leaves on the adjusters so the panhead wasn't dragging anymore. Body back on = great, but the steering box fouls on the bonnet due to the head extender so isn't sitting quite square.

Next job is figure that out and stick the body back to the heater channels.

If you still going to chop the roof I wouldnt have bothered with the doors until after the chop as they will have to be fitted again.

You can't chop the roof until the doors are fitted as you need to adjust the window frames to suit, plus tacking them into the shell helps to keep the body square and strong.

Gutted the other door to plonk in the hole today. Expected the door gap to be massive as the body is a bit wonk, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was ok. Now to get some sheet steel and start bending up a bulkhead.
