Title: Android Auto Audio Question
Post by: breezasib on 31 July 2019, 19:47
Will shortly be swapping out my 2016 GTI with no Android Auto and getting a 2019 GTI PP.
My question is can you use waze or google maps to navigate whilst listening to audio from the car radio/cd/media?

I also see the new Android Auto was released yesterday. Anyone tried it yet?

This is the new version:
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/android-auto/android-auto-4-5-5928-release/ (https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/android-auto/android-auto-4-5-5928-release/)
Install & clear the app cache and then the option to try the new version should appear in the app settings

You can definitely listen to radio while Android Auto is operational. Haven't tried a CD or SD card.

What you definitely can't do, is use a second source from USB as there is only one USB port, and that will be occupied by your smartphone.

Yes you can listen to either CD or radio or media while aa is running, or use an media app from aa (iplayer or Spotify or whatever)

The only source you can't use is music files on your phone.

Thanks for the replies.

So if you say have the car radio on and Waze navigation running do the navigation audio voice directions cut in / over the radio?

Just taken delivery of a new GTD Mk7.5  so not fully explored yet.

Lazy question, does it have storage as the Mk7 Discover Pro?

If you mean does it have an internal HDD for the storage of music etc. then only the Discover Pro models have that feature.

For the MK7.5, the Pro model can be distinguished from the standard Discover Navigation model by the fact that the former has no rotary dials on it's face plate (just touch sensitive buttons), whereas the latter has two rotary buttons either side (volume / power on the left and search / scroll on the right).

Also the Pro model has a large widescreen 9.2" screen whereas the standard unit is "only" 8"

Hmm, thought I'd give the new version of AA a try, but I deleted the old AA off the phone, downloaded and installed the new 4.5 APK from the link above, but it just looks the same as the old version (not like the newer version on the linked Youtube video) ?

Remember to clear the cache in the app and then go into settings where you should turn on the option:
"Try the new Android Auto - For car screen only. Update now or wait for automatic update, coming soon"

Then when you plug into your car you should get the new version.

Cleared the cache and data, even uninstalled AA and reinstalled the APK for version 4.5.592854 and still get the same ?

No option for "Try the new Android Auto - For car screen only. Update now or wait for automatic update, coming soon" ?

Guess I'll have to wait until it's an official launch ?

Hmm maybe to do with the phone or switch at google's end then. Mine is a pixel 3 and I get the option in the settings although I have no car to try it on yet

Just to ask my last question again:
So if you say have the car radio on and Waze navigation running do the navigation audio voice directions cut in / over the radio?

No 4.5 update available for me either on Android One.

It'll be a staged rollout - Google will decide when you get it and flick the switch on their end. it likely won't require an app update

My Samsung Galaxy S9 updated about an hour ago and I am now running the new version of AA v4.5.592854. On holiday at the moment but will be giving it a go on the drive home!

Works flawlessly.

I've been pondering why I didn't seem to have the new Android Auto on my phone despite seemingly having the version number that supports it.

I discovered that the secret to getting the new Android Auto on my phone was to go into the settings on AA (not through the car, you can't make setting changes in the car!) and toggle a switch to enable the new interface.

Its quite nice I think.

The only annoying thing is that when you get out of the car, the thing is still running on the handset and you have to exit car mode to get your phone back... I've read others talk about that bug, maybe its going to be fixed soon.

Hmm, haven't noticed that. If it's not a setting then that does sound like a bug, sounds like it only affects some phones.

I did the same this morning fredgroves and think the look is much better. I also like how they have added the time elapsed/remaining for Spotify and Amazon Music tracks as this was a minor annoyance for me.

I didn't notice the car mode bug but will keep an eye out.

Updated for me too. Looks good.
One thing. Anyone found shuffle button for Spotify

About the only thing that I'm not overly impressed on with the new AA layout is that it always defaults to map view on starting up. I tend to use AA with either Tune-In Radio or Spotify so it would be nice if it defaulted to that (or at least gave em the option to) ?

If shuffle is on, it'll replace the "previous" button. If it's not, it's under the 3 dot menu

Im totally confused on this. Last week I went into the AA settings via the app on my phone and enabled the option to try the new update. Then plugged my phone into the car and I had the new AA interface.

Went to work the next day as usual plugged my phone in, but AA was now the old interface. Ive been through the AA settings on my phone and cannot see the option to try the new update anymore. Manually updated the AA app via the Play Store and still I cant seem to get the newer interface back.

Any ideas?

It seems to be when you are playing your first track, there is no need for a previous track button so it shows the shuffle logo there (whether shuffle is on or not as far as I can tell). This may have been why you could see it again when you unplugged and plugged back in...

Then when you are on track two onwards, the previous track button appears and you will need to look under the 3 dot menu for shuffle as sjw says.

How odd, what version does it say you are using on the app?

I agree Sootchucker and lots of others are saying the same. There's a forum for issues and suggestions here-->

The new AA is a server side switch. It's not tied directly to app version number, it doesn't matter whether you have a Google phone, a Samsung phone, etc. Google decide when you get it. Why it would go backwards, I don't know, but I don't think you'll find a way to force it back. You could try clearing the cache etc, but that'd be pot luck if it helped or not, and it might work for some and not others
