Yup, most classic insurance companies will only cover you if you are 25+ and the car is over a certain age. I looked into it myself last year

i'm 19, was 18 when I took the policy out on a Saxo Vtr paying £1450 all upfront with parents and sister as named drivers, then when that went bang I bought the Rover, if I remember correctly at the time I could of got insured on a mk4 1.8t for £2000, same for a mk2 gti 8v and mk3 8v but had a £2000 budget for car and insurance..

I was 18 (2 months before my 19th birthday) when I took out my policy on my Golf mk3 1.4 'L' and my cheapest quote from admiral was £2,040 :O although already looking at renewal prices for September (Just out of curiosity) and with my 1st years no claims it's going down to £1,343 with Endsleigh.

i had to pay £1800 when i was 20 for my mk 4 2.0 GTI, no years claims which sucks as i did have 3 but as i was only a named driver it wasnt accepted . That was with admiral who were the cheapest then.

Now 21 just about to insure mk 4 1.8T 1yrs no claims fully comp for £1000 so not too bad thats with ELEPHANT or ADMIRAL which seem to be the cheapest now with mum and dad as named drivers which brought it down about £100-200 so worth doing.

Insurance companies like to rape young boys. The stroy in the paper of a 17 yeard old with a 1.0 Corsa (thinking it would be cheap to insure) then the insurance company coming back with £72000
