« on: 18 September 2008, 22:38 »
hi everyone, i was thinking about getting my paintwork 'mopped' to liven up the dull paintwork,i dont really have any experience in this area and was wondering what exactly this is,also,my mate said that the mop is just an attachment for an angle grinder and that i would be able to do it myself using my own angle grinder??!! any help or suggestions?!thanks.

would strongly recomend not to do it with an angle grinder. the rotarys we use in the trade are vary speed.
would say that getting it done by a pro is your best bet really so you dont f*ck your paint up.
the attachment comes in different grades of foam either on a fixed plate or with a velcro backing which attaches to a plate, depending on how f*cked your paint is determins what grade of compound used on the pads.

it would take ages to type out a full detailed explanation of how its done etc, at the top of the detailing forum theres a rough guide to detailing, my advise would be to get done by a pro, watch how he does it and then buy yourself some polish/sealent/wax to keep your car looking sprite

Ok, if you want to have a go with a polishing machine have a good read of this http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=63859

I have a porter cable and superb results can be achieved.  But it is not a quick or cheap option.  A full correction will take at least a day and the full kit will cost you almost £200.

There is an interesting budget option here http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=83874

As for the suggestion of mops on angle grinders - NewGolf said it all

 Some mate he is!  No, no, no.  Pay someone (or be-freind) a specialist.  Learn how to do it, then buy the kit yourself.
