Title: Metallic black vs Solid black on a Mk5 Golf GTI
Post by: jayboy on 13 October 2009, 16:38
Hi

I am currently looking at purchasing a MK5 Golf GTI, from looking at the pictures I assumed that it was a metallic black as it looked really "glossy". However I have since found out that it is in fact the solid black.

Is this a cause for concern?

Its an 05 plate and I reckon I'll keep the car for about 5 years.

Grateful for any views.

Solid black all the way. mine was solid black and it looked alot better than any met I have ever seen. When clean it produces a much deeper shine too

I have the pearlescent black. In the sunlight, you can see the range of colours.

It's okay but I personally would have preferred solid black. As said above, when properly detailed it can look like wet paint.

Thanks :)

Not actually that bad tbh. Bit sh1tty at the moment  - looks more like my old Scooby rally slag!!!LOL!!!

Gets treated to a wash/wax almost every week.

Waiting until the Spring, then I'll get it detailed properly.
In the meantime, just building up a nice wax layer to keep it going through the Winter :)

I have pearlescent and it does look good when all shiny. Just need to wash and wax it regularly to keep it that way.

Well I think its fair to say they both look stunning when clean.....don't think I am gonna let the fact that the car is solid black put me off. The metallic and solid look lovely imo.

Solid black here:

I was a little concerned about it not being metallic when i got it but when its all clean it looks very glossy and get loads of +ve comments. I think it a bit rarer as well than metallic, also I think the solid is more of a purer black as well

Our car is the pearl /metalic black.

I am really pleased as one thing I was concerned about is how much work it would be to keep it (looking ) clean.  I think the metalic is more forgiving in this respect - that is only my opinion but it has not been as hard as I was lead to believe.

The solid black is not so bad for this either, maybe all the "old wives" tales about black making people think it worse than it is.

Be under NO illusion - it gets dirty like every other car!

It just looks dirty quicker!!

But when you're an enthusiast, you spend a lot of time looking after the car anyway

Every time yoy wash a car it scratches it a bit.
It is kindest to the paintwork to only wash now and again.
The wheels do need to be kept clean, but dont put 18" Monzas straight into a cosy garage whilst wet or you'll get filiform corrosion under the thin and weedy laquer.

IIRC pearl and metallic paint is more resistant to scratches and stone chips than solid.

Mine is pearl and I love it! :)
