Title: T5 - Mobile Office Caravelle Conversion (Floor, Rails, Roof, lights & Bench ) P4
Post by: SoundillusioN on 19 February 2012, 23:41
My long term friend Alan (also known by a few on here who have met him as Dave) was after his first Van for his business.   After a long and difficult search for the right candidate that fit the budget, this turned up.

2003 2.5 (174bhp) Transporter

Plan:

Turn it into a mobile office for his student lettings business.

Gut it
Cut out panels and replace with Tinted Glass
Insulation everywhere
Board it out (Including Roof)
New padded rubber flooring
Rear seat rails
Fold flat rear bench and seat belts
Colour changing Spot lights in roof
Custom made desk and storage units.
Leisure batteries and charging system
Swivel base captains chair (Driver)
And loads of other undecided shizzle.

He would post this up himself as he has an account but he's just too bloomin lazy!

He's never in his actual office and is always travelling around the city that he rents houses in (very busy).  Manages other peoples properties too.  Often the houses he works on are empty due to renovation so he wants a space he can do the paperwork side, somewhere comfortable with everything he needs in it.  Plus it will be advertising the business on the outside and provide somewhere for discussing contracts with clients/customers whilst on site inside should he wish to.

Sounds a great plan, I've always wanted a mobile office but haven't needed one as yet.

Look forward to some progress

Panels cut out for windows.

New OEM Caravelle glass was layered with security film and then dark smoke tinted before fitting which doesn't effect the view that much at all in daylight.  Both O/S panels fitted, N/S sliding door fitted. Rear N/S panel was left in with glass fitted over the top (dummy window) for undisclosed security reasons.

Picture fail, will have more of the windows inside and out soon.

Yeah it's not looking good....  I was most impressed when the glass was in, looks like it was always a Caravelle.

Few log book/insurance issues during the conversion, one of issues being it's no longer a 3 seater van. All sorted now.  It will seat up to 6 people.  New, genuine fold flat bench with seat belts purchased that will run on rails from front to back.  Cost around £1500!

Rear bumper needs sorting out, to match the front.

Yeah I can't remember all the issues but I think TAX banding was another one.  I could be wrong but I think there was some speed limit issues too.  As a light goods vehicle it was limited to 60mph on Dual Carriageways.

Oh and Wherry, as far as wheels are concerned, this did come into conversation, so did a slight suspension drop.  Believe it or the wheels fitted are 16s!  Needs some 20s!

Initially he was keen on changing but is so low on the priorities list it may never happen.

Rear bumper needs sorting out, to match the front.

Yes it does, I think that it's a replacement due to the original being split at some point. It's on the to do list.  Rear wipers also need sorting out.

Dewiper it maybe, I think it would look tidy.

Yeah exactly what I suggested... He's not sure.  Visibility is low anyway so he may as well.   Especially since he is considering a reversing cam and a TFT head unit etc.

Yeah, there was talk of a caddy first but sadly that will have to wait, shame though as I am less helpful when issues pop up with this.  Recently had some running problems and oil appearing out of nowhere.

Interior in progress. Will get more pics up tomorrow.

Hello Dave

Van looks good!!

Shhhh, we don't call it a van anymore.

Title: T5 Van - Mobile Office Caravelle Conversion (EGR Delete & Service) P3
Post by: SoundillusioN on 05 March 2012, 10:51
Engine was not running as well as it should have been and starting from cold was a tad rough. EGR valve was blamed as the culprit along side tired glow plugs.  EGR was full of sh*t.  Was removed, cleaned up refitted and still not behaving.

Alan decided to sack it off and replace it with a straight through pipe.  Cheap at £70!  not.

Not pictured due to a lot of the work being done in the dark, glow plugs were changed, the inlet manifold was also removed and cleaned up and the motor was treated to an oil and filter change.  To do all this the front had to be taken to bits, bumper, slam panel and rads dropped.  Sounds easier than it was.

What's an EGR?  :embarassed:

Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve.  It's some new fangled cr@p for better emissions.

Assists complete burning of fuel by recirculating a portion of the exhaust and running it through the combustion process again. It results in a cooler, more complete burn of the fuel which decreases the engines noxious emissions by prohibiting the formation of some harmful gases.

Bits of it yeah..  Otherwise I would have just said its a valve that recirculates exhaust gas to burn it off better.

Problem is because of this they soot up and fail!

So, because Alan seems to be too busy working on the van to take pictures, between us we don't have many.. We're struggling to find "in progress" shots and pictures when it was nothing but insulation and sound deadening. All cavities have been filled with lambs wool insulation. The roof has been done with Double Foil Bubble insulation.

Pics of removing the Cab Divider

I've not done a great deal to this, although despite the little I've done to help, it's a hell of a lot more than what I've done to my own.. Last year I did do a lot though.  I'll be back on the case with mine soon enough.  :lipsrsealed:

So more picture fails but here's what I have, was working up north so stopped at Alan's on the way home and helped him sort his roof out.

He'd already sized up and cut the MDF, also he'd drilled holes for a set of Colour changing LED spotlights.

Helped him carpet it then had fun trying to fit it!  God I wish there was a camera man around when we trying to pin it up, it's a lot harder than you think!

This is me looking like I'm about to give up
(http://s14.postimage.org/vzaoh7asx/Alans_T5_11.jpg)

Roof on, lights wired up, seat rails fitted, rear sliding/fold flat bench fitted. and more carpeting.

Apologies for cr@p quality snaps but Alan has a cackberry.

Me pulling a face whilst watching the trial fitted TV that's not wired up.

More to come very soon.
