Replacement key, how do I go about it?
« on: 08 December 2010, 16:36 »
OK I should probably know this but Ive never had a car with only one key so ill have to ask....

I want a spare/new key for my mk4 golf. The key I have is the 2 button keyless entry one. Its quite tatty and the keyring loop has snapped etc etc so i wouldn't mind a new one but how do I go about it? Ive seen them on ebay but they look like replicas and id rather keep it OEM. Im guessing any key cutter can cut the keys but only VW can code them? What prices am I looking at and where's the best place to buy these new key/fob from?

Any member with Vagcom/Vagtacho & the knowledge can code you a key, If your car is a pre 2001 you can pick up a second hand key off Ebay, Get a new blade cut the smae as your origional one & then have it coded

I went down the route of getting a blank blade cut and was planning for someone with vagtacho to program it up, but the quality of key blank was truly crap (too narrow) and it has since gone rusty sat in a drawer.

I wouldn't trust the knock off stuff on ebay.  Cheap great!  No.  It might have a new key blade but the immobiliser chip isn't and they can't be re-programmed.  Genuine 2nd hand remotes are safe as long as you match the part number.

Yes, I paid a few quid over but knew I was getting a genuine new key and immob chip that would definitely work, with a guarantee
