9 people so far, that's a great number.  Given the cost of all the parts needed, nearly £300, we should be able to squeeze a great deal from a company, the amount of cash we'll be putting their way.

The only thing I have noticed is that some of the packages seem over priced compared to if you took a similar packagein seperate parts for example caliper carriers £98
Discs £120
Pads £42

Total £260 from Vag Parts yet some companies are asking £300 plus for the entire kit!!  I am sure the Discs can be had new off ebay for around £50 so that takes the price down to £190 so I have asked in my e-mails what the discount is on just the caliper carriers as well as what the dicount would be on the whole package.  We may be as well trying to do group buys on all the seperate parts!! :undecided:

Definitely count me in on the group buy as well, I didn't with the Audi TT auction I was hoping to get.

Personally I think they were for a bit much.

First reply:

Rich,
Let me know the numbers you're looking at, we probably have 5 kits currently in stock for this application.
Genuine Red painted Anniversary Caliper carriers with 312mm plain front discs and Mintex Extreme Fast Road Pads.
We can do these for £270 delivered within Mainland UK.

Mike
VW Speed

Bit much me thinks - Thats using anni carriers tho thay cost £130  Still at least its a start
Title: Re: Group buy brake upgrade.

Yeah bit pricey.  If it included new painted callipers and vented discs it'd be good, but otherwise it's a bit of a rip off :)

hmmm not bad - on the VW Speed site there is a cross drillled set for £348 -
http://www.vwspeed.co.uk/volkswagen/vw-parts/312mm_Cross_Drilled_Front_Upgrade_Kit-1287-323.html

and he sells the carriers at £169.  I think the Mintex pads are at least £50 so the discs would be around £50  :undecided:

except the pads will wear the discs unevenly due to them being shaped by the old discs.

always best to get both

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the e-mail.

Yes this is something we would be interested in, in fact we have done a GB before on the carriers but people went for aftermarket discs and pads etc.

If you give me an idea of numbers and if they want the bare metal carriers or the Anni red ones and I will send you the price

Hear from you soon

Chris

Yeah I agree, let's just go with the carriers.  then we can choose our own brakes and pads.

Although any advice on those items would be appreciated.  I know I want vented/drilled discs, but don't know what a good yet cheap set would be :)

Think tho not 100% Also beware i think you need spacers to use Audi TT rears - best to stick with the octavia VRS rears TBH - stright fit :afro:

I maybe interested in some red carriers if the price is right??

I personally would say, that it would be best for everyone to sort out their own discs/pads, as for example, I would want to be using cheap vented, plain discs (grooved and/or drilled ones just wear pads down too quickly), & some quality track day/fast road pads such as the excellent Ferodo DS2500's.

I'm under the impression that some people are confusing vented discs with drilled ones, as I didn't think you could get solid 312 discs??  :undecided:

Excellent.  Maybe we could get a quote for the Audi TT carriers, then a quote for the anni ones?  Then make a group decision.  to be honest whichever is cheapest will be best.  I could really do with sourcing some callipers from somewhere too, co I can carry on using the car whilst I paint the bits.

also go for bare metal; a tin of hammerite smooth is only a fiver which will be considerably cheaper than ready painted Anni carriers

Have we heard anything back from other companies?  I think we should get some fairly confirmed group buy numbers, say for example we have at least 10 interested parties, possibly 15 if the price is right.

We decide on the best deal, get proper confirmation of who's buying, and go in for the kill!  I'd love to have the brakes sorted before 26th April :)

Right guys we have a reply:

Hi Chris,

Thanks again for your mail.

As long as the GB is at least 6+ sets as a minimum! then the cost per pair is 87.95+vat.
The front pads would be @ £38.13+vat is bought at the same time as the carriers

P+P we'll do using tracked Parcelforce  service for these at £6.95+vat. This cost of £6.95 is up to 10 kilos so the carriers and the pads could ship for the amount if any one wants to order the pads.

On the discs, I'll be totally honest, its best they are sourced by each person themselves from either Audi /VW or after market if they prefer. We have about £1 on each disc and they are a real pain to pack and ship being so heavy! they push the shipping cost up a lot too, so I think its best we keep the GB to carriers and pads, discs the guys can source easily from a dealer or aftermarket if they wanted 'performance' ones.

As long as there is at least 6 people please Chris, then I'll set up a Group buy on our secure online shop so all the people can order direct with us through our online shop to keep it easy for you.

How's that?

Martyn

I think its pretty good, there original price is the best I could find and this is another £10 before VAT.  Second hand prices tend to creep up towards the £100 mark as well from what i've seen.

Well got this email hmmmm  :undecided: :

Hello Richard,

Many thanks for your email.

This would be something we could help Golf GTI forum members with.

Here is some pricing for you.

Caliper Carriers - £160 for the pair (retail £238.20)

Front Audi/VW Brake Pads - £65.00 (retail £80) or Ferodo DS Performance Brake Pads - £99.95 (Retail £115)

Front EBC Brake Discs - £60.00 (RRP £72.00) – OEM brake discs - £119.99 (Retail £124.55)

In regards to the front brake discs, the quality and manufacturing over the EBC and OEM is identical, I would recommend going for the EBC front discs to help with costing of an overall kit.

Would you like me to quote a special ‘Forum’ price for fitting as well as an offer on a full pressure bleed of the brake system?

Best Regards,

Vince Hickman

get the feeling that £160 would be for Anni carriers - still well overpriced!!

Just got this from vwspeed:

Rich,
We generally supply the painted Anniversary versions as people like to paint their calipers red.
We have 4 or 5 sets of these on the shelf and for these and the Group Buy items you'd be looking at £135 delivered within Mainland UK.

Not very good news from kool vw unfortunately

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the e-mail.  I have also been in touch with Chris about this also from the forum, he said he was going to get in touch with you.

Understand you have to get the best price for the guys, no worries there.  Be good to get some feedback when you have the price together mind ;-)

With those volumes our prices would be as follows:

Carriers - £159.99p

Carriers/Discs/Pads - £358.99p - these are all genuine VW parts and VW are well known for being pricey for brake parts compared to performance aftermarket options!

As I said be good to have some feedback on them.  All prices include VAT, next day insured delivery etc.  We do not charge extra for PayPal etc

Anything else then please let me know

Cheers
Chris

So the best so far is vag parts wth £103.34 inc vat (for bare metal carriers)

Now my idea is we ask www.vagparts to do them for £100 each inc vat as there is a lot of us wanting these.

What does everyone think??

Turbobeast could you drop vag parts an email to ask if thay can do them for £100 each?? As i know you emailed them first.

Who wants to drop out because this is too much? Please let us know.

From previous experience this company is pretty good but not sure about the discs there or the pads as they don't state make, what I will do is when the carriers are sorted I will find the best deals on Discs and Pads around and maybe even try and get a company to agree another group buy on some if we can all agree if not I will find a selection to suite all of us!!

Right then Ladies and Gents chris has had this email from vag parts :afro: :

Hi Chris,

Bear with me on this please, I am trying to get a better price out the factory if I buy 30 myself. I'm trying to get the best I can for 'all of us', bear with me a little longer can you please?

While I am talking with Germany, is there any chance.... we can ship all these to ONE delivery address please?? that will save HUGE amounts of money if we can and time for us to pack 17 orders one at a time, rather than 17 sets in one box which is VERY fast and easy, that brings MUCH cheaper costs!!! because we don't spend as much time packing them or 'handling in general' and of course one shipping charge is a lot less that 17 individual charges!!

Let me know if this is possible please, and I'll get pricing confirmed ASAP when the Germans get back to me.

Thank you!!
Martyn

We are going to wait for a better price and let you all know asap

Here is the latest:

ello Chris,

Ok, the Germans replied this morning so I can now confirm that the cost per per of callipers for a group buy of 15 pairs minimum is £87.00+vat a pair. As mentioned can we ship to one address though please?  is that possible?

Let me know Chris,

Many thanks
