Title: Going extraordinary lengths for things.
Post by: Ryan90GTI on 04 November 2018, 22:15
900 miles by road,
52 miles by sea,
17 hours travel time,
3 countries,
And not a lot of sleep later - I finally have a set of Clubsport Belvedere alloys.

So this got me thinking, what extreme lengths have/do you go to for things? Or am I just weird?

I’ve got a set dumped in my in-laws garden!
They’re keeping the gnomes company.

I used to import bits from Germany quite a lot once upon a time when I had time, money and enthusiasm.
The exchange rate was much better back then though.

That’s quite a trip and I admire your dedication!

Still the best wheels for a GTI

Beautiful wheels but I think i would have paid a courier company.

A courier would've cost slightly less, but me and the missus had a nice weekend away.

The wheels feel very light in comparison to the Austin's. Going to give them a coat of Gtechniq C5 before they go on the car.

You've a very understanding missus. Can't imagine too many being happy to spend 17 hours in a car just to collect a set of wheels!

And don't forget a few before and after pictures

Hoping to have them on the car by the end of the week. Our lass knows what I'm like with my car's - we flew to Southampton to pick up my Octavia because it was the 'right car' for me to then sell it 4 months later because it was boring.

THEY'RE ON!!!!

Check out the weight difference between the Austin's and the Belvedere. It's made a massive difference in how the car drives, seems to take imperfections in the road better too.

You should have bought two sets while you were there.

Then show yours off as bait and add on 10% to your spare set to cover your effort.

They do look nice I must say.

I thought it looked like you didn’t have any fitted but wondered if it was just the angle.

Thanks for the offer but I still have my own set bought for one of my other mk7’s a few years ago. I ran into insurance issues so removed them and they’re still sat in boxes somewhere.

They're a bit of a pain to clean tbh, especially when you've had Austin's which are the easiest wheel in the world to clean.

Took the scenic route home from work tonight as I sometimes do if I fancy a bit of fun down the country lanes. What a difference these wheels have made. It's one of the best mods I've ever done to any of my car's. Would highly recommend going for a set of lightweight wheels for those of you who like to tinker with their cars.
Title: Re: Going extraordinary lengths for things.
Post by: Jeffers40 on 12 November 2018, 08:43
I completely agree with you as one of the best mods I've done to a car. I bought a set recently too for my CSE40, or what ever the abbreviation is for my car..., and they were in Spain so had them shipped. They just don't seem to come up in the UK. Anyway the difference in weight from the 19" Brescia wheels my car came with was amazing and the difference in the ride of the car is equally amazing. Whether its the jump from 19" to 18" making it more compliant or the reduction in unsprung weight but the car rides so much better with them fitted.

It's probably a bit of both tbh. I very nearly went for a set of Brescia from  Kunzmann but I saw a video on YouTube from TyreReview and they recommend the best size wheel for the Golf was 18". Then once I found out about the weight of the Belvedere it was a no brained. Performance > Looks from now on when it comes to alloys for me.

7 wheel brushes?

Now don't get me wrong, I love wasting my money on detailing gear but why on earth would anyone want 7 brushes? I'd much rather jack the car up and take each wheel off.

I like to get the wheels off a couple of times a year to give them a really good clean and seal but for general washing? That's dedication! I can definitely see the benefit of brushes, I've gotten used to the complex Santiagos but anything that makes the process more efficient would be worthwhile. Hopefully my letter addressed to Santa c/o Lapland will do the trick

First wash in roughly a month - the longest it's gone without.

Belvedere alloys are a bit of pain to clean but not as bad as I thought.

Some Belvedere wheels have come up for sale on eBay. Not a bad price considering the tyres are pretty much new + the red centre caps are included. Bit off haggling and there's a potential bargain.

Whats everyone doing about wheel security these days?  I recently had two 20'' wheels stolen from an Audi A6 even with two wheel locking nuts fixed.  £1006 each wheel, plus £225 each for tyres to replace.  Even Audi confirmed wheel locking nuts were a complete waste of money now with the latest removal tools available to buy.
Title: Re: Going extraordinary lengths for things.
Post by: mcmaddy on 24 November 2018, 12:03
It's like car security, if the scum bags want something then no amount of security will stop them unfortunately.
Title: Re: Going extraordinary lengths for things.
Post by: Guzzle on 24 November 2018, 13:13
I wouldn't say that locking wheelnuts are a waste of money. Sure they won't stop the most determined thieves, but they're still better than nothing. As are a good security light and maybe a wheel clamp.

However some things, like your and your family's safety, are more important than a car. If they can get past all your security measures, best to let them get on with it.

Says for manual as they don't do the wide DSG version for RHD. Works fine though, needs slight trim on the clips but 2 min job.

Steering wheel: £600
Gear knob and gaiter: £317

Eye watering like everything else on the car. Belvedere alloys £718 each.

Ouch! Expensive mods but worth it.
A nice warm fluffy steering wheel on a cold winters morning is bliss!

Make the next mod a cheapie, Audi 12v socket cover at around £8
For something so small and simple it makes a big difference to the interior. (I might be overselling it a bit)

@ Watts, the darkened tails make a big visual difference which you’ll appreciate when admiring the car whenever you look at it. Bear in mind they’ll be worth a few quid when you sell them back on again offsetting a lot of the cost unlike wine or beer which just goes round the U bend or over someone’s front lawn on the way home from the pub.

At the risk of boring everyone's arses off further, here's a few more shots of the car just after its Sunday bath.

The fluffy steering wheel cover:

If you look closely you can see where they've made weight savings on the Fuchs alloys, around the bolt and hub area is much thinner casting and even the rim area seems to have been shaved back to the wonderful S001's look like they have huge rim protectors:

The furry seats, even though they're not the much desired buckets they're really grippy and comfy:

And last of all, my one and only addition to the cabin ambience:

Much as I like the wheels I'm a bit paranoid they'll get wrecked so might well buy a set of replica Brescias (sp?) or Pretorias to run over winter, it won't matter too much if I wreck one or more of those, plus the replicas normally have a bit more aggressive offset than OEM wheels.

The hanging baskets and pots were used as props and come courtesy of my next door neighbours. They've kindly put one up on the garage too which I'll probably inadvertently end up eating or knocking myself out on at some stage.

I can’t get logged in to my photobucket for some reason and Flickr is a faff so see the above quote from a few years ago.
There’s loads on eBay or probably cheaper from your local TPS or even Audi dealer.

I'm running my Austin alloys now with some winter rubber on them. Can't wait for it to get warmer so I can the proper alloys on.

Lightweight wheels are such an underrated mod.

Wine and beer is rather nice though, especially with some pork scratchings

I did consider the value of the parts if I sell them later but good to hear it from someone else and yes, they will look good. Shall I, hmmmm, maybe, perhaps, possibly

Sure, installed one first week the car arrived... the one from the Skoda parts site.

I ordered a couple of these for mine and the wifes. they look pretty good. should have come like that from the factory

Yeah, surprised how many of the performance Audi's don't have them either.

Done it! Ordered a set of rear R lights today, still a bit concerned about my wallet but a rather nice bottle of red loosened up the purse strings

Nice Watts!

Cheers  I've been mulling it over for a couple of years  but I think it's going to make a real difference to the looks of the back end. Thanks to all for egging me on (I think!).

Indeed! Just been delivered too, look great. The seller dropped them off in the donor R which he had changed to 7.5 rear lights. He'd done a few smart mods on his car, the Cadiz wheels had parts blacked out so they looked like thin spokes, looked much better. He also had an Akrapovich exhaust (not sure how far back it went) which had a very nice tone, tail pipes looked very good too

Is this just a straight simple swop of the whole light cluster?

Course, you could have just bought an R in the first place.

Whilst the wallet was open, did you buy a DA?

I was going to get a DA but I was worried that too many moths might escape :embarrassed:

As for the R, well, who knows, perhaps on the next change, I will certainly consider one

I’ll be honest, the slightly darker lights seem an odd upgrade as guessing very expensive? Or are they the dynamic ones from the 7.5?

It's very easy swap. Two 8mm nuts on the inner lights on the boot lid and the outer ones just unscrew. If you have any trim removal tools they come in handy to pop the cluster away from the body. Not essential though.

Be very careful with the corners of the outer cluster. I would imagine they'd break very easily.

Shouldn't take more than 45 minutes to an hour.

It is a subtle change but they do look better, just the 7R ones. Secondhand they're not too expensive, I wouldn't open my wallet too far on such a frivolous purchase

By the time you sell your original cherry red lights it makes it a very cheap mod.

Next up for me will be CSS rear muffler mod and gloss black rear valance. I'd love a CS spoiler but apparently they don't fit... anyone had a go?

From what I’ve read, fitting a CS rear spoiler to a GTI it isn’t a straightforward job. Apparently, the Clubsport uses the tailgate from the ‘standard’ Golf, which is different to the one on the GTI. So to fit the Clubsport rear spoiler to the GTI would involve changing the tailgate as well.

That's what I found too, I wanted to modify my mk7.5 into a Clubsport, looked at the work involved, spoke to a guy in Scotland who had done it really well... and then I bought a Clubsport!

See what you mean about the reduced cost. Never realised the lights were different but slightly darker is nice. Think the new GTI dynamic ones looks darker but not ensure if there are different versions.

Nice video of a CD+S S exhaust on a GTI at 1.00 min..
