Need some advice about TCU, please
« on: 12 September 2017, 23:02 »
Hello,

I'm a newbie, non-motor head hoping for some advice on behalf of my 75yo father who doesn't do computers (phew that was a mouth full).

My father has a '97 golf automatic that refuses to change up to 3rd gear and beyond. So he is currently driving it on 1st and 2nd gear.  He thinks it is the TCU that is faulty and needs to be changed.  I've Google the TCU code but there are no hits, not even on eBay.

Please could you give your opinion as to what you think is the problem?  And if it is the tcu, where can I find a replacement or are there alternatives that I could use?

Many thanks and please forgive in advance any ignorant comments / questions from me.

As a first step you would need to have the car scanned for fault codes.
TCU = transmission control unit, or gearbox control unit, gearbox control module.... however there are a lot of different ones, even for a mk3 Golf.

Where are you based? Maybe someone off here can scan the car for you.
