Title: vdo gauges wiring problems
Post by: ...joe on 09 October 2004, 14:58
hi
just got hold of a set of vdo gauges out of an audi (you know the ones) to put in my 8 valve gti.
they came with most of the wiring loom, i'm assuming the voltage should be easy to wire up and i also assume the oil temp can be wired to the original sensor, but i'm not sure how to wire up the pressure gauge as i didn't get the sender with them. i know i have to get one for the correct pressure but where do i put it, on the engine, when i get one and where is a good place to buy one from?
if any one can tell me how to wire these up correctly i would be very grateful
thanks in advance for your help

the only way to take them apart is to prise of the metal ring round the front of the glass, it isnt glued (mine werent anyway) then remove the needle then put the new face etc on. oh yeah they light up red if you want green you gotta open them up and remove the red filter then put green bilbs in the back. any questions pm me i will try to help

It all depends on what your car is.

The 16V has the 0.3 and 1.8 bar senders on the oil filter housing so you can just replace whichever one you have with the sender you got.

The 8V has the 1.8 bar sender on the oil filter housing and has the 0.3 bar pressure sender on the cylinder head.

You have to make sure you replace the correct one otherwise you knacker your low pressure warning system.

You need to check the spanner flats on the sender to check what one you have.

Nice link! I nicked the gauges from the audi 80 16v quattro i also swiped my engine from but aint been quite sure how to wire them up...
I think i kept the wierd pressure sender too.. i hope!

Actually i think my Golf needs some custom gauges:

1. Panic Meter (for any passenger who utters the words "go on, redline it then")
2. GSF Component Lifespan (user-selectable; currently on cheapo Engine Mount mode)
3. Impending Gearbox Failure Whine-ometer (In case its drowned out by music or shouting)

I'm just about to wire some up aswell. What have people connected the bulb +ve to? I guess the cigarette lighter is illuminated so perhaps that? I also guess that the main feed to the gauges comes from switched 12v. Where's the easiest place to get that from in my scirocco mk2? Any ideas?

i connected the bulbs to the cigarette illumination.

u can either use a switch and run them off the cigarette lighter 12v feed (this means u have to switch them on and off manually to avoid a flattened battery) or u can find a spare ignition live terminal on the fusebox, hunt about with a voltmeter until u do then just hook em up to that. then earth them at the big earthing block above the fusebox, should be a few spare terminals on that aswell.

im in the middle of it at the mo still cant decide where to put them!????????you'l need that t piece which is what i was hunting for.it an m10 1mm thread and you can use a brake line T section and male to male connnector to fit it.these arent that cheap about £6 for the T piece and about the £5 for the male to male im waiting on a bulk order of both so i will have some complete sets for sale.if you want the sender for the oil temp i can supply that aswell oil pressure im still looking into.

oh rubjonny i have you temp sender for ya!
