Hi, i bought a mk4 golf 1.6 last night, and to me it seems a little bit fast for a 1.6, i have just come from a mk4 1.4 so maybe thats the reason, but it does seem a LOt faster , plus havin a bit of trouble veryfiing milage, im thinkin its had a engnine change but my engine doesent seem to look like the other 1.6 engines i have googled lol, what the hell is under my bonnnet lol, ill add some pics tomorrow of the engine, and hopefully someone can shed some light on it

Just used camera with flash, i hope to god this aint 2.0 , take it that will be gti aswell?
i rang dvla today to make sure it wasent engine change, they said they no details of it
vosa said they basicily have no idea, passed its mot in october last year, thats all they give a sh!t about
-
The little different colour patch on the black plastic cover? Thats where the 2.0 badge should be! :undecided:
Where did you buy it, private or garage? What did dvla identify it as?
-
Ignorance is bliss mate!! Enjoy your 2.0 1.6! :lipsrsealed: :lipsrsealed: :lipsrsealed: :lipsrsealed:
-
Take an average and call it a 1.8
-
Oh its only a 2.0.... dissapointed
-
your insurance is gona rape you lol

thats the ebay listing , from where i bought it
iots from nottingham
-
Are you sure its not been cloned as a '1.6' ? Even says on the ebay listing it had GTI badges which makes me think it was always a 2.0, just cloned to be a 1.6? :undecided:

im thinkin the same mate, that the car is a gti, and my reg plates are off a 1.6?
:undecided:
-
what interior do you have? GTI interiors different to 1.6 so if it was a gti and theyve said theyve put a 1.6 engeine in with out doing that then you should have the gti engine. though it does look like a 2.0
try a 0-60 run if its 11 seconds its a 2.0 if its a little more its a 1.6 if its just under 10 its a 1.8n/a though doesent look like a 1.8 to me.
-
What about checking the chassis/Vin numbers to the V5?
-
Could be a 1.6 that had a transplant?!
-
What about checking the chassis/Vin numbers to the V5?
Yeah ^ this should probably be quite high on your list of things to do.
-
ive checked the only mot i have which is the current one and the vin numbers match which means it was mot'd this way, but on checking past mots online in 2009 the miles dropped by 30k which i thought was very odd. i now recon in 2009 the plates were swapped the milage then went up normally so has been mot'd this way with wrong plates for 2 years running... omg!!!
-
It's got colour coded bump strips as gti do shame it's not fast enough to be a sleeper though, 2.0l engine also not very good, it is known to use alot of oil and it doesn't produce much power plus the fuel consumption isn't great
Would have been beeter to have the 1.8 20v even the n/a 1.8 20v would have been better
-
Can I state the obvious? What does your v5 say?
-
Can I state the obvious? What does your v5 say?
I havent got it back yet, i only bought the car last night
-
You havent got a green slip or anything?
-
yes i have the green slip, but that doesent contain the chassis number
-
Should have the make/model/engine capacity on though
-
yes it does, it all shows as 1.6, but that engine isent a 1.6 and im pretty sure the car aint either, so the plates must of been changed ?
i cant come to any other conclusion
-
Looks like a gti to me!

coloured rub strips only on gti's
-
Quick online check shows its an SE
-
but a non GTI steering wheel
its a cut and shut to me :lipsrsealed:
-
Something dodgy. Plus the seller bought a pair of front bumper grilles and mirrors for it back last year
-
its also got front frog lights in the main lamp, i dont think the 1.6 has them?
-
More importantly, it REALLY needs lowering!
-
Why is everyone getting so worked up by the crossflow 1.6 MK4?
Customer has one, infact I think I'm servicing it tomorrow, I will get a photo if so.
They're fairly nippy, even the 1.6's.
Easiest check anyway is the engine code on the cambelt cover or stamps on the head or wherever VW put them.

Hi mate id really appreciate if you can get a pic for me, i have never heard of a crossflow, but im no mechanic
thanks

-
Not bashing crossflowed engines in general just the 2.0 isn't my choice of engine, it's far too weak for a sleeper. I've got a 1.8t in a 1.6 shell and I still don't think it's enough to be a sleeper yet, let alone a 2.0
-
can you please explain , what a sleeper is and a crossflow . im lost here :undecided:
-
Well I would start to panic, that is a 2.0, these are the 2 1.6 engine options.

2.0 to confirm yours

start to panic? i have been panicing since i got it home last night, now the question is wtf do i do with it, if i get it checked out legally im gunna have to either change the records over to a 2.0 , which i cant afford to run or insure, and this is just going off the option of it being a engine change, theres still an option that it has the wrong plates on the car, and i would loose the car and the money i spent, id like to know abit more about this crossflow,as that is my only hope now
-
Crossflow is a type of engine and makes no difference to your 1.6 / 2.0
-
Does that mean it can look like this and still be a 1.6?
-
Does that mean it can look like this and still be a 1.6?
Nope yours is a 2.0 100% so plate change or engine swap.
-

FFS, i have no idea where to go from here, best option is to try and get my money back, get the police involved ect..
Any ideas, what the hell i should do?
im absolutly gutted tbh, id of rather kept my 1.4
-
1st step is to check the vin on the car itself, make sure it is intact and has not been tampered with, check that against the v5 to see if they match, next step speak with the vw dealer to confirm model / spec and engine size.
Seems odd that someone would fit a 2.0 to a 1.6 so it is nicked or the dvla made a mistake many years ago which can happen.
-
Wow, dodgy buy then!
Cross flow engine is an engine that the intake and exhaust ports are on the opposite sides of the cylinder head. It's a more efficient engine than the counter flow.
I'd contact the seller first of all, try and see if he knew anything about it, then I'd contact the police. Did you do a HPI check before you bought it?
-
Tbh i dident do a HPI check, it was abit of a rush buy as i needed it for work today, if i was to pay for a hpi check now what will it get me? will i find anything out? its been mot'd this way for the last 2 years, i spoke to vosa and dvla, today about the mileage, and there is no record, will the hpi check bring back anything deifferent?
-

I would do a hpi check asap but I fear your in trouble
-
The HPI check will tell you if the car has been nicked, or has any outstanding finance. I'd do one NOW to have as proof of the car's history, you can do a FULL one which is about £30 or a lesser one which is about £10 or so.
-
how would the car of passed its mot and how would he of registerd it if it had been nicked? plus we still dont know if its a plate swap ,because ,if it is the information is only gunna come back on that reg, and not the car
-
MOT doesn't check if it's nicked or not. Who says the MOT is not dodgy?
-
btw guys i really appreciate the help,i just hope i get to the bottem of this,
-
if them plates dont belong to that car, im doing a hpi check from that reg, and it isent even this car
if it was nicked surely he wouldent of been able to register it and get a new log book in his name from the dvla, of course we are talkin about the plates but still dont know if they match
-
Well do the HPI... And when you get the V5, check the chassis/vin numbers to make sure they match.
-

That's what I would do.
https://www.mycarcheck.com/ (https://www.mycarcheck.com/)
Do a HPI check now, the "classic" one should be enough. Then go outside and check the car's VIN number. DOUBLE CHECK underneath it, have a feel around and a good visual inspection to make sure it's not been welded on or tampered.

-
The engine number should be on the cambelt cover, it's on the driver's side of the engine. Should be a sticker.
-
The chassis number should be in a number of places.
a- on the top front of the passenger side dash, which can be seen from looking into the car,
b- look in the spare wheel well and theres likely to be a data sticker.
-
cant u look in the boot and see what the white sticker says? all the info should be there, engine, Kw ect
-
update: i now know the plates belong to the shell, as the vin number matches, all clear under/credit ect
just need to find this engine code now,if the sticker aint there , is there anywhere else i should check?
-
Good stuff, car isn't nicked then!
Maybe it's had an engine transplant and the person who did it didn't declare the conversion? I know that a lot of dealers just get the spec of the car through the numberplate, mine was advertised as having aircon, but when I viewed it it didn't. Dealer said he didn't know, he just typed up what came up in his screen.
-
this engine number sticker does it have what looks a bit like a barcode next to number? cos i can see somet that looks like that under the black plastic engine cover to the right hand side, if so i will have to remove the cover
-

Yup
-
ok first of all , its fookin freezing out there haha, ok i have the number, its different to the one supplied, so obviously an engine change, presuumebly to a 2.0 as everyone says, atleast im not on stolen plates, now i have 3 decisions , 1 )keep the car and buy a 1.6 engine for it, 2)sell it and struggle to buy a buyer, telling them the truth as i would never rip anyone off like that, or 3 try and get my money back, because keeping it and not declaring isent really an option
again i would like to thank everyone who has helped me , i cant belive what i fell for,
anyone fancy buying a 2.0 that you can insure for a 1.6 pm me lol
-
I'd try and get my money back on it. It's the seller's responsibility to make sure whatever you're buying is the correct composure.
-
Yeah I would try and go back to the seller as it was falsely advertised.
If you keep it, you will find it very hard when you go to sell it..
-
messaged him on ebay, if he aint got back to me by dinner time tomorrow ill ring him
ill keep you posted, cross your fingers for me
appreciate all the help and banter earlier in the thread, i was laughin and crying at the same time lol
thanks guys
-

Good luck mate!
-
looks like the engine is from a vw beetle.
which means .........wait for it
i have a beegolf! LOL
-
So did the SE have GTI trim then :undecided: something still does not add up to me.
Have you HPI'd it yet
-
never thought i'd see someone complaining about the mk4 being too fast
-
just a thought here, does the 2.0 engine cover fit onto the 1.6?
-
Nope it wouldn't fit. The 1.6 dosnt have the inlet like that.
What's the engine code?
-
never thought i'd see someone complaining about the mk4 being too fast

-
get in contact with these people if the guy wont take the car back http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/ because u have the advert it is wrongly advertised and u have case for a claim. but they will tell u everything u need to know
-
unfortunatly we have just found out the engine is stolen, the car will be seised tonight, as the last poster said, i do have rights to claim, as it was false advertising, and i have the recipt from seller saying 1.6 golf.
Good job we found this out, if we had an accident, our insurence would of been void, and sh!t would of got a whole lot worse
only thing is , im now stuck with no car or cash to buy one, gutted
thanks for the help guys.

how did you pay for the car? did police offer any advice.
gutted for you mate but like you said, best you find out now
-
i paid cash in hand for the car, £1750, also cost me £40 to get there and £30 back in petrol costs.
it just gets worse, i hope none of you have to through this
and next time, i ask for advice on buying a car on here i get the same 8 pages , worth of advice lol
-
anybody in lancashire area. with manky !18 inch rs8's alloys, wanna come an swap for some brand new ones with spanking new tyres for £100 lol, gotta be quick though
its my car as it stands, untill the police take it, just the engine belongs to someone else
-
This still makes little or no sense, how did someone end up fitting a stolen 2.0 engine to a 1.6 and more to the point why.
I am very confused by all this, the car still looks like a GTI to me
Also being a private sell means little or no comeback.
-
thing is i have a recipt that he has writen and signed saying its a 1.6., all the documents state its a 1.6 the police told me, i definatly can take him to the small claims court for false advertising, and get trading standards involved
the car is deffinatly a 1.6 se shell, maybe the trims was sprayed silver, or the doors and bumpers are off a gti?
but the car is definatly a 1.6, as multiple chassis numbers match the documents

Yes and no, your dealing with a private seller, my view would be your facing a uphill battle to prove he was aware that something was amiss, it may be the case he never knew.

How odd, I guess then someone got it cheap with no engine, then fitted a 2.0 to make a quick buck.

private sale but it was on ebay so seller hasnt a leg to stand on really, as long as it wasnt sold outside of it
-
didnt someone say that the seller beought a load of gti bits....
-
Mate, thats bad news! Id be gutted.
-
thats crazy
i hate it when sh!t like this happens, some shady people out there

Wow, cant believe this :(

it was bought on ebay, the car was advertised for £1950 or best offer, i offererd £1750, i thought that was a decent price for what i was getting, with the new wheels, milage and condition of the car. The offer was accepted within 20 mins, i then traveled £150 miles to pick it up, payed £20 for one day insurence to get it home, got home payed £200 to update my insurence , took it to the garage had some spark plugs fitted for £20, as the car was spluttering, and this aint including the petrol money it cost to get there and 2 cars back.
whats done is done now, let the police take the car, i'll take him to court, only thing in the mean time is im gunna have to buy a 1.0 rusty old metro, or simular, till i get my cash back, or save up for another.
-
would you get the cash back straight away mate?
-
Have you spoken to the seller about it?
-
Probably not, guy doesent seem to want to know, dunno if he will change his mind, once police visit him but the only way to force it back is small claims court, then itl probly be £5 week
-
'Doesnt seem to want to know??' What did he say when you told him the engine in the car you bought off him was stolen? :undecided:
-
Have you spoken to the seller about it?
yeah , message i got was he bought a 1.6 , its documented 1.6 , and he sold it as a 1.6
but the police said, whether he knew or not, he's still liable, trading standards said the same thing, he sold stolen goods.not under the descritpion advertised
-
he hasent answered phone or text back since i told him it was stolen, his replys was from when i told him it was a 2.0
-
sounds like hes going to put the blag on and say he never knew
but surely he knew
like you said "my 1.6 seems abit fast"
he has to of thought the same thing if he didnt do the engine swap he has to of known about it
-
Surely he would have noticed when replacement engine parts didnt fit....... Unlucky mate, if it was me id probably have kicked off at the seller and knocked a 5 courses of corner bricks off his house every day until he refunded you then sold it on as an undocumented engine swap. I know its wrong but like you say, small claims court will gain nothing. Good luck, especially as you did the right thing

well thats what i thought if ive worked it out after 24 hours of owning the car how would have have not known when hes owned it 12 months! and what is stuck in my mind is when i was driving off he said "its nippy mate" hummmm
yeah ive done the right thing i couldnt have sold it on like that id have been scared stiff waiting for them to fetch it back,
small claim court probly wont be much good like i said £5 a week or somet but at least its gonna annoy him best i can do really at the min :( gutted tho might set up a donation line.... Help Bullzeye Get Another Golf lol
-
Sorry to hear about ur ordeal mate,if it was me id have turned green and gone round the twits house and stuck the car where the sun dont shine by now.i think ure handling this very well.good luck gettin it sorted mate.
-
hope you didn't leave positive feedback
-
One small point, he might not have known, the 10 owners part would have put me off anyway.
-
One small point, he might not have known, the 10 owners part would have put me off anyway.
foolishy i was refreshing ebay waiting for a golf to appear i hadent seen allready, then thhis one popped up. it was literaly on 5 mins, thought i would try get myself a bargain, i obviously dident read it properly, as the 10 owners would of put me off aswell, but still ,... 10 owners doesent mean its got a stolen engine, i have just been very unlucky , as for the he might not of known, theres a small percentage of that as he was a young lad and looked like he knew a thing or two about cars, this may nopt be the case, but either way, as the police said, he sold stolen goods, therefor im entitled to my money back, whether they persue him for committing the crime makes no difference, he still owes me
i know its had 10 owners and its not the best golf in the world , but considering im starting from scratch with no money, would it be worth gettin the car back with no engine and fitting a 1.6, and does anyone know how much this would cost approx?
-
Shop around some breakers maybe mate but i think it wil cost quite a bit.where bouts r ya anywhere near hertfordshire?i know someone who could prob get a lump for it and deffo fit it for ya.
-

im from lancashire mate, probably worth gettin the car back though yeah? even if i end up selling it for parts, scrap, or selling it engineless
im gunna be better off than the police crushing it
not sure if this would affect the claims courts decision on a refund though.
-
At the end of the day its gotta b better to get sumthing back from all this init.check it all out first though so u dont stitch ur self up.if u get it bk and u break for spares im interested in the wheels.
-
Id break it, no way would i even think about fixing it. Why did they go to the bother of fittin a stolen engine? What else could go wrong? Its summit thatll always be in back of your mind
-
I would not want it back, something does not add up.
Hope you get it sorted.
Does anyone know btw what the 1.6 would have needed doing to get a 2.0 to run, I guess the ecu has been changed but what about the wiring.
-
Pretty sad story this one :(
I'd want it back to strip for bits and to sell or you'll probably be out of pocket for a very long time if you just let it lie, it'll cost a bit in legal fees no doubt and it'll get drawn out way too long :(
-
hope u get it sorted mate
-
Hia mate, just been reading about your bad luck. Hope the guy pays up and your not out of pocket. If your stuck I've got a cheap escort mate.....I'm not trying to make money off your misfortune just saying there's a option. Hope you come out on top.

if i had some cash mate id consider it, unfortunatly this has skinted me, gunna have to buy a banger next month when i get payed :(
-
just out of interest
couldnt you get the car back and get a engine to put in? or are you not interested din the hassle?
-
just out of interest
couldnt you get the car back and get a engine to put in? or are you not interested din the hassle?
i have looked into this , id have to buy the engine off the insurence company, as they police wont pay for it to be removed
then id have to pay the towing cost of them takin the car away, and storage for the time it will be there , £30 a day, absolutly rediculous considering i have done nothing wrong and i own the car legally, and then id have to change the engine anyways, as i cant afford a 2.0, so will probly cost me the same amount of what i payed for the car all over again.
-
it seems to me someone couldnt afford insurance or got a free engine or maybe the 1.6 blew up from RAGGIN the sh!t out of it and decided to put a 2.0 in it n forgot to tell dvla .. or someone didnt want to pay the insurance :P :P who knos ... just enjoy it mate . still not enough power for my liking ;)
-

think you missed a few pages pal, the engine was stolen, the car has been siezed, by police, and i have no cash or no car
-
i think its crazy how someone like you whos done nothing wrong has to suffer and loose out,
i think its really unlucky mate, from all the cars you could have bought you got this one.
just shows really because you would never expect this to happen to yourself or anyone close
-
Absolutly rediculous considering i have done nothing wrong and i own the car legally
Thats the problem you don't, part or all of it belongs to the insurance company that paid out on the claim.
-
unlucky isent the word mate, we as a family simply cannot belive whats going on, i aint your average golf enthusiast , we are a young couple with 2 kids, just really like golfs. we have had so many bangers in the past got a bit better and better each time we got a car, till we finally saved up for this,my partner works from the car, as a home carer, traveling between old peoples houses, lookin after them, so her job is on the line aswell now,we are so stressed out, we cant sleep or anything,i hope he gets the book thrown at him when the police visit him, i wouldent wish this on my worst enemy, but id wish it on the seller.
-
Absolutly rediculous considering i have done nothing wrong and i own the car legally

the police said i do own the car ( the shell that is) i could pay for the engine to be removed, once the cid have finished with it, or try buy the engine off the insurence, but i wouldent be able to touch the car without paying compound charges, that will probably run into £100s
-
Just re-read all this you say it has a stolen engine... How do you know if an engine is stolen ? There's no way to trace an engine.. In my eyes it's just a undocumented engine swap.. No ??
-
think you missed one of my posts mate, when the engine number didnt match and he refused to give cash back i saw no choice but to ring police to ask where i stand, they said they would have to check the engine number when i gave it them it came back as stolen
-
Just read your post mate. Sorry to hear this its truly unfair that because your honest your out of pocket
-
Hope this gets sorted mate, can't imagine wat ur going through!!
-
just read this whole thread  thats really unlucky! id get it crushed, do you still have to pay holding charges if u get it crushed?
do you not know a few lads you can take up notts and have a lil pay back? u might be able to get some cash back..
-
Gutting does not cover it. I really feel for you mate.
So is the car gone now? How are you getting about?
Anyone local ish got a run-about to loan them?
Man I hope this works out somehow and not with you massively out of pocket.

-
Golf GTI forum trip to the seller's place
Imagine that, a convoy of golfs driving past his house, once at the garden doing a burnout for every golf that passes , would be awsome haha , i 'd only have to pay the compound charges if i want the car back. but by the time police have finished with it, would probly be £100s if not thousends. :undecided:
-
this is a really sad story from a very honest sounding guy..Your a much better person than me mate,
I would have just kept it before calling the police. If it wasn't stolen they would have left it and not helped you at all anymore its a private dispute (car sales) and has nothing to do with the police whether its a 1.6 or a 2.0 they don't care.Soon as it came up stolen they have no concern for you a serize the car.Obvoiusly they know your not the guilty party as YOU CALLED THEM! but they don't care.
If i had my an idea it had a dodgy engine i would have just left it myself and run it into the ground 5-6 years etc or went back to the guys house demanding my money back.As usual in the UK doing everything by the book gets you screwed over!
Utter bollox!

Reckon Id have kept it and not said anything too. :undecided:
Im up for a trip to the seller anyway if anyone wants to sort it out.
-
I defanitly wouldn't keep it if I know it was stolen.
I mean yeah its not every day that the police come looking at your car to see if the engine code matches ect ect ect.
But I know people who its happend too. My mate was fixing his car with another mate, the other mate was in his van, my mate had gone inside to make a brew. The police pulled over to ask what he was doing (as it was 11pm, and the car was up on axel stands with a van over the drive, when my mate came out with the cuppas he asured them its his car and that the lad in the van wasn't pinching the alloys. Anyway they ended up spending the next hour making sure that everything on the van was legit, checking engine codes, radio, basically everything, even checked each tyre to make sure that they were legal.
Also if you crashed and the police looked at your car and saw the engine was not only a 2.0 therefore voiding your insurance but also stolen I doubt youde be in a good position.
-
Sorry but all this talk of visiting his house is plain daft, 1) where will it get you and 2) it might be the case he never knew.
-
let the police sort it, after all they sorted ryan gti out...[/sarcasm]
-
let the police sort it, after all they sorted ryan gti out...[/sarcasm]
As far as my motoring life goes now,7 years in cars 3 years on bikes. I’ve always paid my,insurance, road tax,MOT, Car/bikes kept it tip top condition ,I've never had any benefit when it comes to police regarding motoring EVER. Only negatives..Points for 37 in a 30mph..points for 1 L plate missing..Points for a slightly weeping fork seal (dangerous use of a vehicle apparently not a re-MOt)fines etc etc
My cars has been vandalised..broken into/My motorbikes have been stolen/kicked over numerous times and I’ve had 0% results. I woke up one morning for work at 6am noticed the garage open ,bikes gone! call the police in a panic..they asked me if the robbers where there right now..I said of course not....What happened?
They sent someone round 2 days later who wasn't even a police man to have a look "ahh yes they've used bolt croppers" Thanks mate didn't notice that, I was thinking they'd eaten through the locks with there teeth ..silly me
And now out of all my experiance I simply can't stand police.I know there all differnt people etc but as a hole my experiance has been terible in my adult life.
Anyhows rant over.I hope somthing good comes for you mate you seem to be a far too honest person,A rare thing nowadays
-
Update
Absolutly nothing has happend yet, they have a part time officer in nottingham on the case, she has been off for 2 weeks, and hasent even recived the documents yet (that have been faxed twice)
situation of getting my money back is , i will probably win the case in court, but i have been told to expect a payment, of £5 a week off seller,so theres no justice there
looks like gettin the car back is quite likely, wether it comes back with the 2.0 engine in or not, i cant afford to run /insure it
could anyone give me some advice on how much i could pick up a 1.6 engine for, fitted ect
and will the ecu, thats attached to the 2.0 be the original for the 1.6 or will that need replacing aswell?
-

Ecu will be different also I am not sure what other mods would have been done to get the 2.0 in and running.
-
To be honest what I'd do is sell whatever you get back and try and squeeze as much off that as possible. Buy something real cheap that will get you around and just try and save up for a better car. Think of the positives. You'll be having £5 a week back now, I know it's not much but when you find yourself real tight you can always count on a fiver appearing weekly
-
Have u thought about makeing the engine coversion legal?
Inform the dvla nd get it registered as a 2.0 and sell it on!
-
Really feel for you about all this really hope it gets sorted out for you soon.
-
If you do get £5 a week back, try not to touch it and have a sneaky bonus in the future.
-
man, being honest sucks.. i`m really gutted for you mate. i suppose the best method to deal with this would have been do the engine conversion back to 1.6 then dispose of the 2.0 engine.. that way you would still have had a car and not been so out of pocket.
it may all sort out for you though mate, perhaps the engine was from a recoverd car and the police dont have record of this yet.. do they know who the engine actually belonged to?..
-
Really hope all this works out in your favour mate.
It all does sound a bit strange and jamie16v may be right, it could be the case that the car was stolen, recovered and then sold on by the police/insurance company and it could all be legit they just haven't worked that out yet.
-
quick update:
preston stolen vehical squad has just informed me that the whole car is stolen, not just the engine, so its a 2.0 gti (wayne you was right all along) im just waiting to hear where i stand with it now, ie. getting the car back from the insurence
i dont even want the car , but atleast ill be able to sell it/break it up
-
if the car is stolen then you never owned it so will never get it back from insurance
-
if the car is stolen then you never owned it so will never get it back from insurance
Correct, you lose money and car, my friend had the same thing a few years back.
-
Just read the whole thread and.. WOW!!.. that's massively unfair  I was thinking its a gti aswell as i've got a 1.6se and it doesnt have painted rub strips or that interior.. If theres a lesson to be learned its RESEARCH! It may be time consuming but its free and can help you avoid situations like this! I'm not blaming you by any means, you seem like a very honest decent guy, but its a dog eat dog world out there and you've got to be on your toes! Hope things work out for you anyway mate..
-
Sorry for bumping this old tedius thread!
The insurence company have just rang me and said i can buy the car back for 1000 pound
i dont want to insure a 2.0 cant afford it, buying it back wont affect my court case as id be buying it back ( a new sale)
here's the question, is it worth buying it back to sell on / or brake , i'll still get my cash back for the car through the courts,( if i win)
so as it stands isit worth payin 1000 for this golf, the wheels alone cost 500 pound in november, and are virtually brand new (rs8 18 inch)
the car is actually an X reg (2001) 2.0 gti
2 owners from new
81k miles
will be registerd as stolen recoverd
-
should of just not been so honest and sold it on to be!
-
tbh mate, im not that kind of person, us honest people are in the minority these days, but if id of sold it on id of been worried everyday thinkin they would bring it back. also they wouldent of been insured,so basicly if the buyer had hit you and wrote your car off , theyd of had no insurence and you would of been another victim of this car
-
in case its to late now but always check a car before you buy rush or not! espesially when its 1700 quid!
-
in case its to late now but always check a car before you buy rush or not! espesially when its 1700 quid!
as far as the checks go, the car looked fine, and drived fine, even the hpi said it wasent stolen as it was on different plates, and all the vins numbers matched., so not being a mechanic myself, lookin at the engine, it said vw on the top of it, i was never going to know any different.
it has taken 3 weeks for the police to realise iots a gti, not 1.6 shell
they said, the vin numbers had been changed professionaly, so it looked really convincing.
-
Wow sorry mate. Lesson learned do your homework etc but all the same mate i feel for ya
-
feel for ya aswell. surprised someones gone through all that effort for just a mk4 golf unless it got nicked when it was much newer who knows????
-

Lesson learned indeed! i tell you what, ill be the worst car buyer ever, i actually feel sorry for my next car seller already :)
-
feel for ya aswell. surprised someones gone through all that effort for just a mk4 golf unless it got nicked when it was much newer who knows????
the car was only 6 year old when nicked.

Being honest if you sold it you would not get much if anything more than a grand anyway.
Breaking it might be an option but with it being a 2.0 will not be many takers for the engine etc.
-
I’m sure you already have done this but couldn’t see in the posts. Have you contacted eBay saying it’s not as described? I’m a regular buyer and seller on there and I think you’ve got 90 days to make a claim and they have always been good with me with iphones and stuff although not sure on the situation when it comes to cars.
-
yes they cant do anything as i paid cash in hand for the car
-
quick update, and a very happy one
still no news from the court, im awaiting a hearing date
on the plus side i bought myself a 1.8t mk4 and i must admit, its f**kin awsome!
just want to say thanks to all who helped me suss out the last car was stolen, im sure many of you will help me with the new one
first quesion lol... my car makes a screechin noise as i start it up. its quite embarrasing lol. thhinkin it might be the starter moter
any ideas?
-
yes starter motor, theres a how to guide on here. needs a strip down, gud clean with a toothbrush or something similar then a decent lashing of grease when you re-assemble everything. done mine a few months ago, wasnt as difficult as i first thought!
the guide:

Alternator drive belt slipping maybe.
-
no itll be the starter motor, i just did mine yesterday, mind you put 2 hrs aside for the job, its a bit of a job moving everything to get at that top 18mm bolt.
once its off use mole grips to get the 2 7mm bolts started, wish i had cos the spanner just rounded them straight away. its pretty easy to fix, i just put a dab of grease on then wound it, didnt need to wipe it all down as its just grease

ide say starter motor, atleast that would be the first thing ide check as its not hard to do, bit of a chew on getting the starter motor off but once its off its pretty streight forward.
-
or cambelt tensioner i thiought mine was starter turn out it wasnt lol
cheers
-
Thanks , im going to attempt to remove the moter later, now im no mechanic ,but im determinded to fix it, everyone looked at me this morning when droppin my kids off at school, so it must be loud outside the car haha
-
Just read this from beginning to end. You really got stiffed but it's great to see you went bought another one and have stuck around. Good man and good luck with your turbo beast!

by the way if your thinking it looks like the one in my sig pic, its because i blagged the insurence to swap alloys, so i traveld to newcastle and swapped them
-
So surely you should get that money as it's you who's out of pocket...
-

+1
-
you mean the auction money mate? nope the car was paid out in full when it was robbed in 2007 so admiral own the car they were good enough to let me exhange wheels tho which i was rather pleased about, im just glad to see the back of it now i willhave my day incourt
-
25mins left and bid up to £830 feel sorry for the buyer already  i supose at least they know there buying a stolen recovered car unlike i was, bet the dont know it needs a cat/bushes/correct steering wheel/ restamping vin numbers/ trip comp dont work it also looks clean on the pics...the roof is majorly scratched along with the bonnet and door  oh dear should have been crushed
-
hello fella.. just read your thread. really bad luck with this purchase, but we all make mistakes (even though technically you didn't make one as such)
kudos to you for sticking with it and doing it the right way... karma will be your friend
hope the little scroat that sold it to you (and/or who stole it) will be ass-raped in prison
enjoy your new legit ride
-
Christ!! That's quite an ordeal, I'm kinda scared about buying a car now if DVLA, VOSA and HPI check didn't throw up any alarm bells.
Just out of interest, how come you are now able to insure the turbo model if the 2.0 was too much? I won't ask how you got the money for another Golf, that's just plain rude
-
hi mate yes been a nightmare for us, it wasnt as bad as i thought it would be on insurance last year i was paying £160 a month for 1.4 golf, now im paying £179 a month for 1.8t but did have to put £370 deposit down :embarassed:
but after what happened i just wanted the best i could get, i was utterly skinted so had to wait a few paydays then put £1000 deposit still owe some money on car to be paid over 3 months, so the next few months are gona be hard with over £600 a month going just on the car thats without the odd jobs ive had to do on it and of course the daft petrol :undecided:
but i love the new car and if i win in court ill be happy!
-
I hope it all works out ok in the end.
-
179 a month for insruance? Plus a 300 odd quid deposit?
Out of interest, how old are you?
-

my girlfriend insures it with me as second driver, she's 2 years no claims and been driving 5 years with clean licence she's 27, im 29 only been driving 18 months and got 2 convictions in10 and lc20, carried over from my provisional licence
-
WOW! thats pricey... im 24 and just paid £600 for the year all in with my 20 yr old missus as a named driver.
Anyway back on topic, feel for you buddy. I would have just sold it on...... but thats me!
Look forward to hearing how you get on in court mate, all the best.
-
As with some people here, I randomly came across this and read the whole post from start to finish and had to commend you on your honesty despite knowing it was the harder route.
Best of luck in court, you deserve it.
-
thankyou mate fingers crossed
-
Was gonna make a new post but this one is so long now deserves an ending to the story
 We Won !!!! judge has looked at the file and decided he has no defence, weather he knew it was stolen or not is irrelevant as the law states you must know what your selling, therefore he has been given a ccj to pay me the full ammount plus court fees whoooop!!
fingers crossed he pays up in 1 go , we managed to avoid the long journey to nottingham court aswell result !
-
result mate glad u got it sorted and hopefully you,ll get ya cash in full rather than £3 a week or sumet like that
-
result mate glad u got it sorted and hopefully you,ll get ya cash in full rather than £3 a week or sumet like that
