Title: 18 Austin Refurb - Colour Change
Post by: ianmk4 on 10 January 2019, 20:51
Hi guys, I have a mk7 gti in red with the 18 inch Austin alloys. Unfortunately, the lacquered is looking a bit tired and one is kerbed.

Has anybody refurbished the wheels to a non standard finish, like anthracite. I had a search but couldn't find anything, although I did find a red GTD with anthracite stock alloys and that looked really good.

Thanks for your help.

There were some that had been refurbished in black on eBay a bit back. I think anthracite wheels on a red car looks good. Alternatively you could always get them diamond cut again?

Or try some Badgeskins? Least you can remove them.

There are full pics of painted Austins on Google images and they don't look great.

Personal preference but I don't think the Austin wheels look that good in a solid colour. A few examples here (ignore the type or coating, I'm talking about the block colour):

Get them diamond cut, they are a good looking wheel and painting them will ruin them. Anthracite can look good with a red car, just not Austins.

I completely agree. Austins in any finish apart from diamond cut, just don't look right. The gloss and matt blacks in the videos above just look horrendous to me.

Thanks for the input guys. I do like the standard look, I've just read that they are difficult to refurb as they have to be diamond cut and there is only so often that this can be done.

I found the below link from a previous thread, and really liked the look of the red GTD towards the end.

The narrower spokes of the standard 18” Nogaro alloys on the mk7 GTD do suit a single colour powder coated finish really well IMO. I think with the GTI’s Austin alloys it might not look as good as the spokes are much wider. Just my opinion though.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. The wider spokes really suit diamond cut on the faces.
