Check out this link that has many technical details of the V (& W) type Volkwagen engines - its well worth a read if you are interested :

http://autozine.kyul.net/technical_school/engine/tech_engine_packaging.htm

Also these are the power & torque figures that I have found on another site for the V5 & V6 engines in both 10/12 and 20/24 valve versions :

V5 2.3 10V 150PS 151lbft
V6 2.8 12V 174PS 172lbft (mk3)

V5 2.3 20V 170PS 162lbft
V6 2.8 24V 204PS 199lbft
V6 3.2 24V 241PS 236lbft

When I was at a dealers (non VW) he looked up the V5 in a book which detailed all of the changes over the years and it specifed 150bhp at launch and 170bhp in 2001 - not sure if it stated the no. of valves.

I dont claim to be an expert on this subject - this is just information I have found out when I was looking for a V5.

I've had 3 Mk4 golfs now, started with an S-Plate GTi 1.8T 150, then a W-plate (2000) 1.8T 150, now I've got an 03' 1.8T 180 (I'll post some more about this car later, been meaning to for ages).

This  April me and a guy at work swapped cars for the night, he had my 1.8t 150 and I had his V5 150. This car was a W-Reg (2000) model. Generally my 1.8T had a noticable edge in performance, but the V5 does sound really nice, has that V6 like howl. Other plus points on the older V5's compared to older 1.8T are the fact that even with standard options it does have more equipment on board (climate control, auto dipping rear view mirror etc).

Overal I would always go for the 1.8T due to being able to have the ECU upgraded to 200+Bhp for relatively low cost for the performance.

Current  - GTI 1.8T 180bhp 2003  :-)
