150bhp or 170bhp?
« on: 16 October 2003, 12:33 »
I am considering buying a GTI 1.8T, or a V5. I am having trouble finding out when the V5 changes from 150 to 170bhp, or in the GTI, from 150bhp or 180bhp.

Any help would be most appreciated,

when the golf mk4 first came out there was the following,

1.8 20v non turbo gti, 5 speed (125 bhp)

 afew months later came the:

1.8 20v turbo gti, 5 speed (150 bhp)

then various others have come along throught the years,

i think, the V5 has always been

2.3l 20v 170 bhp,6 speed,  ive not heard of any other power rating (standard) from vw

then the 1.8 20v turbo gti (180 bhp) 6 speed,

dont forget the diesels!, theres a 130tdi gti pd and a 150tdi gti pd, oh yeah and when they stopped making the 1.8 20v non turbo they replaced it with the 2.0 8v (115 bhp) also theres the V6 4 motion which is 4wd, 2.8 v6(204 bhp), hope this is of some help but it is hard to deterine the exact years that each model came about and there power outputs as quite a few on the uk roads are imports!,  ::)

The V5 WAS originally 150 bhp when released in November 1998.

ok matey what ever, hey this thread aint for people to start tellin me im wrong!, no v5 launch in 98, think it was 2000 for ik model, they may be some imports earlier, seems silly really , vw doing a 1.8 t 150bhp and a 150bhp 2.3 v5? havent heard of it my self thoughtthey were all 170 bhp 6 speed jobbies, happy to admit i may be wrong as i did in ist rply, as uk models and imports sometimes vary on power and launch dates ;D

Hi

I have recently bought a V5 and as far as I am aware, they changed from 150 to 170 in early 2001.  So Y reg onwards should all be 170,  X reg could be either and W or below will all be 150.  I have no idea how you can actually distinguish between the 2.

I believe the engine difference is that the earlier 150 models used a 10 valve head and the 2001 onwards were upgraded with a 20v head.

Hope this helps.
