If it's a 150 all 3 letters in TDI will be red also as you look at the car from the front there are two scoop like holes in the front valance the one on the passenger side is an air intake the other is blanked off. Hope this helps.

if it's new then the 130 has a 5 speed box and the 150 a 6 speed one.

I asked the same question of my local dealer last week. He said "the 130 diesel will have TDI on the back, the 150 diesel will have GTI because it is based on the petrol GTI floor pan" perhaps this would only apply to current models though ? kind regards, yt.

That sounds right actually, my 2002 150 had GT TDI (TDI in red ) on the back but when I changed it for a 2003 model ( because I needed a 5 door ) it has GTI on the back.

On a similar note...
My 1.8t GTI has no red letters but is the 150bhp version.
It's a 2000 V reg, is this pre-red letters?

I'm not really familiar with the petrol car coding, doesn't the red I on the petrol car mean that it's the turbo model (180 bhp )?

From what I have worked out, when the GTi models were launched the non turbo used all silver letters with the 1.8 Turbo models using the red 'i'.

When the non-turbo models increased in capacity they then became badged as 2.0 GTi (all in silver) and the Turbo models stayed as GTi, but with the red 'i' replaced with a silver one.

PD150 models are badged as GTi with the red 'i' and all other PD models are badged as TDi's

This means that all models are now identifiable by the badging on their bootlid alone, providing you know what year they are, as they are all running with unique badging on model by model basis.

However, for the nerds amongst us (myself included  ;) ) there are plenty of other visual clues as to which model is which!
