Alloys : Will They Fit?
« on: 24 June 2018, 17:59 »
Guys

Looking at a set of 18 x 8 .5, ET50s.  Any managed to fit a set on a Mk7, standard suspension setup.

If so, what tyre setup did you go for?

TIA

They’ll fit in that size.
Tyres will ideally need to be 235’s or they’ll look a bit stretched.

Thanks

Was thinking 255/35R18s for the tyres.

According to my calcs, I'll have 11.5mm less clearance on the inside and they'll stick out 13.5mm more.

A 255 section tyre is just over 10 inches wide.

Presumably your calculations are based just on the wheel width, so when you factor in the extra width that the tyres will add - approx 38-40mm to the overall width on an 8.5j wheel (so and extra 19/20mm on the inside face and 19/20mm on the outside face of the wheel), you’ll actually have 30.5/31.5mm less clearance on the inside and they’ll stick out 32.5/33.5mm more. Could that mean your tyres extend beyond the wheel arch?

IMO, and as Exonian has suggested, 235 section tyres would be better.

235 or 245 on an 8.5. 235 will have a small amount of stretch, I've run this set up and it was fine but 245 would be perfect. 255 would be too much imho

I'd stick to 8" width and 225/40's, (et40 or 45).

Cheers guys, might look at an 8" solution then.  Not really keen on streched tyres, I'm not that young.

When I was speking my new car I also considered fitting different wheels and tyres.

However, the dealer pointed out that ff the wheels and tyres were not those specifically recommended by the manufacturer in the handbook they would almost certainly affect the vehicle insurance, especially if the car was involved in an accident.
This advice resulted in a financial loss to the dealer as I choose a lower spec. car.

Having been a Court witness for an insurance company I have seen firsthand how a specialist solicitor can completely destroy the driver of an overly modified car that had been involved in a collision.

That’s why it’s important any modifications are declared to the insurance company.

I’ve changed the wheels on my car and I declared this to my insurer. I can access my policy details on line via the insurer’s web site and can see that the modification is noted on my policy, so there’s evidence I’ve declared the modification and my insurer has accepted it.
