pedestrian avoidance
« on: 18 April 2018, 16:08 »
In this https://youtu.be/3VwgvIqXg3A Clarkson says that the Golf GTI gets a lower insurance premium because it has a pedestrian avoidance system.

I have been struggling to get any pedestrians to volunteer for a double blind test of this feature. Can somebody please tell me if the current mk7.5gtiPp has a pedestrian avoidance system?

It does have it... I've never seen it activate. Its part of Front Assist.

On the standard features list in the configurator its listed as "Predictive Pedestrian Protection"

Does it work? No idea, i've never seen it trigger yet. It almost certainly only works at low city speeds so take that in mind before you run over your wife :D (or maybe not...)

What exactly does front assist do?

I’ve had the warning message pop up once or twice when I’ve braked late. Then there’s the pedestrian avoidance at low speed.

Will it do anything else? E.g. brake to avoid a high speed collision?

It will restart the engine in traffic when the car in front moves away from a standstill.

Ah yeah forgot about that. And it obviously controls the adaptive cruise control which amazed me the first time I used it.

Hopefully won't have it activate when mine comes. It's mental the amount of people that I see walking onto busy roads glued to their phones with earphones in too.

There are two different technologies on the front of your car.

Front assist and city braking. Not the same sensor, one is radar the other ultrasonic.

Can't find it. I have Driver Assistance Settings/Proactive Occupant   - but nothing to do with pedestrians.

Have I got the murderous vehicle option?
