Powder coat santiagos
« on: 19 March 2017, 01:00 »
My santiagos are un marked but i want a slight change .  should i powder coat them at a cost of £320 or buy a set of 19" cades appolo £650, and keep santiagos aside as they are, for selling car in future ?
Or other option, leave leave the santiagos as they are and stop wanting to change stuff all the time !

Forum member EricM had his Santiagos powder coated in smoked chrome colour. I think they look good, and having them powder coated does away with the potential problem of white worm corrosion that diamond cut alloys are prone to. Link to thread, including picture below;

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=278775.0

I see that the Cades Apollo wheels are available in a number of different offsets and 2 different widths; 8.5" and 9.5". The spec for your Santiagos is 5x112 bolt pattern, 19" diameter and 7.5" width with an offset of ET51.

Assuming you'd be planning on getting the 19x8.5 version of the Apollos, the offset is ET40 for your bolt pattern of 5x112, which would mean the inner and outer clearance would change by;

Inner clearance; 2mm less
Outer clearance; the outer face of the wheel would stand out 24mm more than your current wheels, so almost an inch closer to the wheel arch edge. Bear in mind that you'd need wider tyres on an 8.5" wide wheel, which would likely add a few extra mm's to the 24mm additional 'poke', so you may have rubbing issues with the tyres fouling the bodywork (if you're lowered). Would an extra 24mm-plus additional tyre width extend the tyres beyond the bodywork? If so, I think that might be an MOT fail. Link to wheel offset calculator below so you can see the impact that different offsets will have on wheel clearance;

If your current wheels are unmarked, I think I'd stick with them and save yourself the cost of powder coating or buying wider wheels/tyres that might give you clearance issues.

If they're unmarked I'd leave them as is. For a small change, how about swapping the centre caps for the ones with a red circumference (depending on the colour of your car):

Or a change of wheel if you have a capacious wallet! I covet the AEZ Raise, possibly as they have a similar design to the Santiagos but for me I'd go 18" to reduce the chance of damage from pot holes and cheaper tyres as I'm a tight a**e :whistle:

£320 is very expensive, I had 4 powder coated last year for £200 and very good finish.

£80 per wheel for high quality faces and barrels on 19s isn't particularly expensive, I'd say that's the going rate.

Not the going rate if I'm paying, the powder coaters that I use are in your neck of the woods. :smiley:

Got the car back today with the Santiagos done in anthracite !  Happy with the outcome ... apart from the plonkers painting my centre caps to match ! I was not amused when I saw that .. but after some too and frow they agreed to deduct the cost of replacements ..
excuse the state of the  car ! I'm just back from the wheel place ... got new centre caps ordered and next job is some detailing ....

Looks good  :cool:

Bloody numpties doing centres too  :laugh: but at least you got them to cough up for it.

Be good to see some pics of the car in full so we could get a better picture of what it looks like.

It's does look like they've done a good job though!
