PAS Problem?
« on: 01 March 2017, 19:04 »
So like most problems its intermittent! Every now and then when cornering or like when parking, it feels like the steering momentarily locks! It's very minimal, like maybe for a second and then just returns to normal? Its not too much of a worry as of yet as I'm not speeding round every street, but for when on the motorway it could be deadly 😳! So far I've had a look in and around the steering rack and can't find anything obvious, no foreign objects. Powersteering fluid is at normal level and no signs of play if steering pump or belt. Bit stumped,  but really want to sort before it gets any worse so any suggestions greatly appriciated!

If its not the belt could be the pump drive slipping momenterilly.
For the steering to lack the fluid must stop flowing. So id be looking into that personally

Is it possible that the PAS pump may be on its way out? Reason I ask is recently I posted up about a high pitch squeel noise I could hear on start up but couldn't figure out what it was. Putting 2 n 2 together maybe its the pump making the squeel and like suggested its loosing it drive? Is it possible to recon the unit or can I get new?

Recon. New
One of a mk3 as long as you get the bracket.
There used in a aray of different vws.

You could possible split the pump and check the drive 1st. Mine use to be ok when driving but on tickover have no power steering but that was the belt loose

Pump, bracket and adjusting arm £50 all in. Kerching! Will be a next weekend job now 😤. Can't wait to get covered in steering fluid and bits of rusty crap 😂
