Are they quiet inside, is there any / much wind, road noise / tyre roar? I guess some maybe dependent on tyre make.

Tyre roar can often be put down to 'sawtooth' tyre wear on the inside edges of the rear tyres. Some makes of tyres are more prone to this than others. You can feel the uneven tyre wear by running your hand over the inner tread of the tyres.

The wear is caused by having incorrect rear toe angles. The only fix is to have full 4 wheel alignment at the dealers, or somewhere that knows how to properly use a Hunter machine. The rear suspension is quite susceptible to getting knocked out of line. Having the correct alignment will make the car feel and handle so much better than one that's even a little bit out.

Thanks. But generally speaking is the MK6 GTI cabin  a quiet place to be?

I once had a MK5 TDI that was truly awful due to road noise so I hoping the Mk6 has improved.

Wow, thanks!

Was the PCV/main seal thing fixed in later cars? Or is it simply a case of a revised PCV (like all the revisions that happened with the MK5 GTI)
Not that I know of. Ive seen a 12 plate with oil on the bottom of the gearbox were it joins the engine as the oil come out of the casting hole.  That may have just being a failed main seal though. The pcv has being revised a few times but the current one looks like the original E version that came with my car.
Heres a good video about the main seal.

Thanks, looks an expensive job with all the work involved, maybe the PCV has some involvement if it fails. Another thing to watch out for!

I went from a MK5 GTi to a MK6 GTi - both 3 door,both on 17" wheels - MK6 is defintely quieter - not life changing
but it is noticeable - just read any road test of the MK6 -the windscreen had thicker glass for a start.

Right, had a test drive today at a dealer (2012 car/50,000 miles)

1. "Leather" on car door where you would lean your elbow had a smooth shiny patch
2. Leather headrest on front passenger seat had another shiny spot
3. Seat stitching frayed where it meets the centre console (when you move it all the way forward)
4. The exterior condition was great, couldn't see any problems

My big question: this car still suffered from the ringing bell waste-gate rattle from 2000-3000rpm on a medium throttle. Should a 2012 car still have this problem? Is the noise completely eliminated with the clip fitted, or would a 2012 car have one fitted in the factory?

I won't be buying the car above based on the interior condition but I worried waste-gate rattle hasn't been completely fixed.

The shiny patches on the leather could be whatever product has been used to clean/protect. My initial thought was wear but in a headrest is a very unusual place for wear.
The waste gate rattle could be simply because the previous owner didn't make the dealership aware.
Re being a 2012 model, so is mine on a 62 plate and I had the rattle too. The clip mod sorts it

Got sidetracked looking at ED35s....

Any idea how to remove this thirty party trim?

Would it be glue or adhesive tape?

Normally double sided tape.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I picked up my mk6 2009 GTi last week. All the usual faults mentioned above have been sorted and invoiced to prove! No other major faults I was told to look out for by my mate who works for a VW specialists
So far so good, when not hooning it it's quiet and civilized, cabin is quiet compared to my mk6 GT TDi I had previous. Unfortunately I have the Monzas issue and no DAB either.
