To buy a GTi or not to buy...
« on: 12 October 2016, 15:40 »
I am going to see two mk6 gti's on the weekend.. one is 2010 plate other 2011. Both have full VW history and one owner and about 75k on the clock..

After doing some googling it seems they are not as reliable as I hoped they would be..A lot of timing chain problems reported, high oil consumption etc

Are there any owners on here who can shed light on these issues?? are they resolved in later models and is it a good choice to buy a 2010-2011 gti?

Im stuck between a golf mk6 gti and audi a3 2.0 tfsi.. Which I thought where the same engine but after some googling seems like they are not.. :undecided:

Any info would be a great help

Thanks

Thanks for reply JV,

I did have a look through that which scared me even more  ..its more common then i thought.. I will be looking out for that sound when I go to see them..

Seems its not best getting one unless it is from VW and under there warranty.. The cars I am seeing are both private..so no warranty..So second thoughts now :undecided:

You need to use the theory of if there is no proof of its the cam chain issue being sorted (invoice of either new engine or the updated version of the cam chain tensioner) then it needs doing for peace of mind, mine had already got a new engine in it and its been as reliable as a wood burning stove.
If you don't know it's been sorted, use that to beat the price down, and/or get the garage to fit the new tensioner before collection.
My car uses almost no oil at all, i check my oil level each week and I have only topped it up 2 or 3 times since buying the car over a year ago now.

I'd definitely recommend mk6 gti. get a good car, Look after it and it will look after you.

Nice to see a positive review. That is the approach im going to take.

Im going to aviod buying private and am looking to pay a little more and get it from a garage that offers warranty with the car.

It is a very good looking car inside out so will difinetly be shopping around for one.

How long have you had yours for?

Hi, Appreciate this is an old thread but my question relates to the topic discussed so hopefully some could help. Being new to the GTI world (still looking to but a mk6 by the way) what is the issue with the cam chain exactly, what should I look for? How do I know if there is an issue? What is the cost to have it replaced as a preventative measure? Was it not an issue on cars made after a certain date for example? Read quite a bit of this and it is worrying, appreciate it probably reads more common than it is but I just want to fully understand the issues and solutions etc?
Thanks
