Cheers JV

well this is my first vw and first GTi  so decided i would do a build up thread with some information on when i brought the car up until the present time i will update my thread as often as any changes are made and all my information/pics of my car can be found here  :

Bit Of Background Information :

Well i brought the car from a garage in the northeast, saw it by chance on the autotrader website and thought why not i will go and have a look tbh i didnt know that much about vdubs (mainly had fords) and wanted a change from the car i had at the time.So i went over and had a look there was also a gttdi 150 for sale as well  for the same price but i preffered the petrol so after a look round it and lifting the bonnet i discovered it was a 1.8T  now i was even happier i had always liked the golf GTI and i went back out the garage to have a think told the salesman i'd be a few mins  :undecided: after some thought i thought how much i wanted the golf due to its condition and its mileage,so back into the garage, and bit of a shock somebody else was looking around the golf  well fortunately for myself the salesman had told the couple looking around it that i was interested in buying it and i had gone to get a deposit  by this time i was definate i was having the car so a deal was done with my old car as a trade in against the GTi

Car Spec :

Golf 1.8 GTi TURBO 150BHP/110Kw
2001 '51 Plate' AUM 5Dr Reflex Silver (with my personalised numberplate )
Swedish Import
Usual GTi Spec:
6 Cd Changer (dash):
Winter Pack:
Mileage(when purchased): 41,950 Miles:
Complete With Full Vw Dealer Service History:(cam-belt changed & waterpump replaced november 2008):

Well purchased the golf in january 2008 with a view to not modifying it  'famous last words' as i discovered various vw forums on the internet and soon realised that there were numerous changes that would transform the golf even more from the standard factory spec car.So as for 'i'm keeping it standard' well that didn't happen

Ok so having put some of the golfs paperwork/reciepts into my thread i thought now that i will start to put in the pics from purchasing the golf to the progress/modifications made to date :afro: the main theme is that i want to keep the golf as o.e.m as possible so thats it looks factory but with a few tweaks here and there   :

GOLF AS BROUGHT :
My Personalised Plate Put On During The First Week As Paperwork Was'nt Complete For My plate To Go On The Car On Picking Up
Also the '25th Anniversary' Front GTi Badge Fitted When I Got The Car Home

SOME GENERAL INTERIOR PICS :

1st WASH AND POLISH (Autoglym High Gloss Used) :

FOR SOME REASON I DECIDED TO ADD THIS  :

Seemed Like A good Idea At the Time But Did'nt Stay On Long.

SILVERTEC FRONT INDICATOR BULBS :
Replaced The Orange Bulbs For The 'Silvertec' Bulbs To Get Rid Of The 'Fried Egg' Look At The Front - Much Better

MKV REAR AERO WIPER & ARM FITTED :
Decided To Tidy The Rear Up With The Mkv Aero Wiper As I Did'nt Really Like The Standard Wiper,So After Reading Up That You Could Change It Over The Mkv Was Ordered And Fitted.

SOME UNDER BONNET PICS OF THE 1.8 AUM :

DE-LOCKED :
After Reading Up On Some Of The Forums About A Security Weakpoint On The Mk4 Golf I Ordered A De-Lock Kit From Vw And Sprayed The Blanking Cap And Fitted,Much More Relieved That My Pride And Joy Is A Bit More Secure From Theiving Scumbags

STUBBY AERIAL :
I Didnt Much Care For The Standard Vw Aerial So Decided It Would Be Changed,So Ordered Up The 'Enigma' Stubby Aerial Brought From The U.S.A looking Much Neater

ANOTHER BADGE :
Having Removed The Other Badge I Came Across This One (I had seen one on another forum on a mk4t and liked it)So Thought I Would Buy It Fit It On.

R-LINE GEARKNOB & GAITOR :
Well Having Owned My Golf For A Few Weeks I Decided That I Would Like To Replace The GTi Gearknob For Something That Looked Much Better  (TBH i wasn't that impressed with the horrible wood trim that vw decided to fit to the GTi)So Having Seen The R32 Gearknob I Decided On An R-Line 5 Speed One So One Was Ordered And Fitted Looks soooooo Much Better  Just Need To Get Rid Of The Rest Of The Wood.

SOME BLUE BULBS FITTED :
Seeing As I Had A Few Blue Bulbs Spare I Found A Use For Them,Why Not Fit 2 To The Door Courtesy Lights.

R32 INTERIOR TRIM :
Finally I Ordered Some R32 Trim For The Golf To Get Rid Of The Wood Trim And That Bought About An Instant Improvement To How The Dashboard Looked And Compliments The R-Line Gearknob & Gaitor.

BORA ILLUMINATED VENTS & W8 COURTESY LIGHT :
Having Fitted The R32 Trim I Found That The Standard Vents Didn't Quite Do The R32 Trim Justice So Read A Few Posts On The Forums And How To's On Fitting The Vents And Making Up A Wiring Loom And Thought Why Not So Bought All The Wiring And Associated Pieces And Set About Making Up The Loom While Waiting For My Vents To Arrive :afro: The Loom I Made Up Looks Factory(pity its hidden lol) Once The Vents Arrived I got To work Fitting/Installing The Loom And The Vents And Also The W8 Light Which Had Also Been Delivered All Was Fitted and I Was Hugely Impressed How They Looked In The Dash Nice Subtle Mod  And They Create A Nice Ambience At Night With The W8 Lighting. :afro:
THE LOOM :

THE VENTS :

W8 COURTESY LIGHT - BLUE LED BULBS(Now Removed For Std Bulbs) :

W8 NIGHT-TIME ILLUMINATION :

BORA VENTS ILLUMINATED :

ALUMINIUM INSTRUMENT CLUSTER RINGS :
Well Looking At The Mkv GTI's I Decided That I Liked The Look Of The Aluminium Instrument Cluster Rings That They Have Fitted Around The Speedometer And The Rev Counter So I Ordered A Set,Removed The Cluster Split The Front And Seperated And Set To Installing The Rings.

NIGHT TIME ILLUMINATION :

AUDI TT PEDALS :
Next Up I Decided That The Standard Pedals Needed An Improvement I Cant Understand Why Vw Didnt Fit Better Specification Pedals To Their GTi Models  So Had To Order A Set Of TT Pedals An Get Them Fitted Now They Look So Much Better Than Before And A Nice Easy Modification To.

CHANGE TO THE FRONT GTI BADGE :
Decided That I Would Change The Front Gti Badge To Match The Red 'I' One That I Fitted To The Tailgate  Typical Of Me Tho Because After Looking Through The Internet I Found Out That I Could Of Ordered/Fitted The 'Lupo' Front Gti Badge  Oh Well I Decided To Fit The One I Had Ordered Anyway So Here We Are.

Wasn't To Keen On The Space That Was Left On The Surround But It Stayed Like That For A Week Or So And Then I Re-Modded It

NEUSPEED P-FLO INDUCTION :
Well After A Few Exterior & Interior Mods I Decided To Carry Out Some Under The Bonnet I Saw This Kit On Awesome Gti's Website And decided Thats The Way I Would Go So Took A Trip Over To Manchester And Collected It Then Managed To Get It Fitted The Next Day  The Kit Was Easy To Install And imo Looks Neat In The Engine Bay And Is Set Of Nicely With The Stainless Steel Heatshield,The Induction Noise Is Subtle Not O.t.t By Any Means And Allows The Engine To Rev A Bit More freely Mid-Range

FORGE FMCL 007P D/V :
Having Fitted The Induction Kit I Then Started To Get A Slight Boost Issue With The o.e.m Bosch D/v So Instead Of Going And Buying Another O.e.m One From The Dealers I Decided To order An Uprated D/v So The 'Forge' Was Sourced Having Read Good Reports About It And Also It Would Make Sense To Upgrade Just Incase I Got The Car Re-Mapped  Also Ordered It With A Green Spring.

MADE USE OF A GTI BADGE :
Having Replaced The Gti Front Badge I Had The Letters Left Over From The Front 'Anni' Badge So What To Do With Them  :undecided: Then I Hit Upon The Idea Of Applying Them To The Ashtray Lid  Cleaned Off The Backing And Just Applied A Little Glue A Simple little Mod Done And A Reminder Of What i'm Driving When I Get In The Car  Also The Lid Does Slide Back To Allow Access The 12v Socket.

R32 EFFECT DOOR PULLS :
Well Having Fitted The R32 Trim I Still Had The Original Wood Effect Door Pulls So Instead Of Buying The Genuine Trim I Thought I Would Have A Go At Painting Them So Brought All The Paint,Primer Etc And Masked Them Up And Set About Painting Them.

As It Was They Didn't Turn Out To Bad And At Least Match The R32 Trim Now

R-TECH RE-MAP STAGE 1 :
Having Started To Add Some Modifications Under The Bonnet I Then Went About Researching Re-maps  Having Read Posts On Some Of The forums Of How Much Mapping Improves The Standard 150 Bhp I Quickly Made My Decision That I Definately Wanted To Up The Golfs Power/Output  Easiest Decision I'v Had To Make  So With Loads Of Tuners To Research Who Offered Good Maps For The Mkiv I Thought It Would Be A Hard Choice I Rang 1 Or 2 Big names And To Be Honest I was'nt That Impressed With Their Customer Service  So By Chance While On E-Bay I Was Looking Through Mkiv Parts And Came Across A re-Map Offer  Had A Read And To Be Truthful I Was Impressed So I Went On Their Direct Link To Their Website And Researched A Bit More So Then Got The Funds Sorted  And Gave Nick Gower At R-TECH A Call And Was Instantly Happy He Talked Me Through Everything And Was Real Helpful With Any Advice And Information So In The End It Was An Easy Choice To Make R-TECH All The Way :afro: So A Day Was Arranged For Nick To Do It (what a long 2 weeks that was) Until The Day Arrived And Was Definately Worth The Wait I Couldn't Believe The Difference A Re-Map Made To My Gti Now I Realised Why People Recommended Having It Done It Certainly Brings Your Golf Alive!!!!  In All Honesty It Was The Best £265 That I Had Spent On The Golf  And Nick Is A Top Bloke Can't Praise Him Enough Cheers Mate :afro:
FOUND A USE FOR MY R-TECH STICKER NICK GAVE ME  :

COLOUR CODED FRONT 'GTI' BADGE :
And Another Change To My Front 'Gti' Badge  I Decided To Take Off The Tags At The Edge Of The 'I' As Wasn't Happy With The Look So At The Same Time I Thought mmmmm Why Not Colour Code The Backplate  So Here It Is.

NEW INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FOILS :
Decided To Change The 'Foils' For Something Else And Managed To Find Some Passat (R32) Style Foils For Sale On A Forum I Got Them For £20  Spent A Day Cutting And Getting Them Looking Right And Had The Idea Of At The Same Time Painting The Centre Piece Of The Needle Aluminium Effect So It Looks Abit Like The R32 Needles As The R32 Ones With The Cluster I Got Don't Fit In My Clocks Still They Look Good And A Nice Effective Modification To The Cluster With The Aluminium Rings.

AND ILLUMINATED :

SHARAN BADGE :
Next Change Was To Change The Standard Rear Vw Badge To The Smaller Neater Looking Sharan One So Brought One From The Dealer And Got It Fitted Looks So Much Better.

'MILTEK' CAT-BACK EXHAUST :
So After Getting The Golf Re-Mapped I Decided That I Would Need To Have A Decent Performance Exhaust System To Replace The Restrictive O.e.m One So There Was Just One Choice For Me And A 'Miltek' Non Resonated Cat-Back 4Mo Style System Was Ordered From Vw Speed  Also At The Same Time I Ordered The 4 Mo Valance From My Local Dealer And The System Was Booked In For Fitting  Must Say I'm Impressed On The Quality Of The System And It Has A Nice Exhaust Note To It Especially On Acceleration  Imo Money Well Spent And Improves The Mid-Range Driveability And Looks Nice Also.

AND FITTED :

COLOUR CODED LOWER GRILLES :
My Next Modification Was To Colour Code The Front Lower Grilles As I Thought This Would Tidy Up The Lower Half Of The Bumper (eventually will be colour coding the front & rear valances) And They Turned Out Really Well And Much Improves The Front Of The Car.

RETRO - FIT FRONT AERO WIPERS :
Well The Original Front Wipers Were In Need Of Replacement So As I didn't Want To Buy The Whole Aero Wipers And Arms I Decided That The 'Bosch' Retro Fit Wipers Would Be A Worthwhile Upgrade  Easy To Fit And Look Much More Up To date Than The Standard Fit Ones.

LOWERED -40MM JOM SPRINGS & SHOCK KIT :
Finally Got Round To Lowering The Golf As I Was Getting Feed Up With The Original Look At The Time I Could'nt Quite Go The Expense Of Coil Overs  So Decided Just To Go Springs & Shock Route To Help The Handling A Bit So Used The Jom Kit Was Good Value And It Seems Of Good Quality And For The Money I'm Finding It Really Good Not Excessively Stiff I Would Say Just Bit Stiffer Than Standard Set Up But The Standard 16's Look A Bit Better Now.

HOW IT LOOKS :

US SPEC REAR LIGHTS :
Decided To Change The Rear Lights I Had Seen Another Silver Mkiv With Us Spec Lights Fitted And I Think They Suit Silver Coloured Cars Well :smug: So Ordered Up A Set And Put Them In.

SPACERS :
Having Lowered The Car I Was Still Unsure Of How The Standard 16's Looked In The Rear Arches Now It Was Lower They Still Seemed A Little Lost Really So How About Spacing Them out? I Wanted The Wheels To Be Level With The Arch Lip So Decided On Some 6mm Ones At The Front And Some 15mm Hubcentric Ones For The Rear Now It Looks Much Better (well until i get some 18's  and then i'l fit some 20mm ones).
