Title: Ex-Random Jord's Vanagon Camper - Now living in Hell
Post by: RandomJord on 10 August 2009, 18:12
So yeah, had some monies burning a hole in my pocket last week. thought id buy a camper! had a good look round on vzi, club 80-90 an the brickyard couldnt find anything decent in my budget, but then as i was archiving emails i came across one from the seller of this van, i initially emailed him about a month ago about this van on behalf of my mum. in the end she bottled it cos its LHD. so i rememberd it was in good nick an good price so i emailed him asking if by any chance was it still available....got a phone call an lo it was! done a deal an as the owner was on a stag do in oxford, he drove it up on friday for me (saved me a journey to penzance!).

so sort of a bling buy but i mustve spent an hour on the phone to the seller, and also a half hour chat with the mechanic whos looked after it for the last 12 years!

When it arrived i nearly sh!t with joy, its great. Cool colours cool North american market spec, damn groovy.

Only bugger is on my drive around on saturday, drove down to guys.....fine.....me an guy drove over to nicks.....smoke! when we got to horneys it was not greeted with smiles and whoops of joy, more looks of concern and an 'is it on fire?' from nick!

Investigation by those that know concluded it had indeed sprung an oil leak but it was not on fire!

so drove home slooowly and ditched it, took it to a garage today (Sterling Automotive, Newbury very good for aircooled and early watercooled) an just had a call saying they think theyve sorted it, will leave it there tonight to make sure its not leaked overninght. then il go get it.

but you want to see pics dont you?

Good engines those pretty nippy as well for the size it has to haul around. Keep an eye on the coolant expansion tank though :)

You know it! Wheels are first thing to sort out. then lower..... then use it!

I just thought it had much more going for it then the usual brit conversion sh!t, Holdsworths, Autosleepers and the like

My Great uncle approved, he had a split, 3 bays, 1 holdsworth t25, 1 t25 cheater, and t4 coachbuilt (which he apparently still has stored after only using it for a year!) so yeah, im happy!

Looks nice and early, so if it's a 2.1 you should have the 112bhp DJ code motor, rather than the 95bhp MV mit Katalysator.

Obviously Subaru EJ20 with a big, fat blower on it is the way forward, on a Smallcar bellhousing and kit from: http://www.smallcar.com/index.php - sadly better than the UK-sourced RJES bits.

Oh and then you'll need a big brake conversion and the only place to go for one of those is http://www.futbus.com/

Who also have a cable-change gearshift in development for the T25 that will remove all that slackness in the 10' rod change system on there by default.

If VW hadn't obsoleted all the T25 Syncro gearbox internals I'd still be bouncing about in one now.

If it wants for anything mechanical speak to Dave at www.futbus.com

His brake conversions are immense and he now does a conversion to cable-shift for the gearbox - less porridge stirring.

Whilst your here... What would you recomend suspension wise to sure it up a bit on the motorway?
Title: Re: Camper! Vanagon import....Canada it is from ey?
Post by: Diamond Hell on 08 April 2010, 23:43
First thing to sort that wandering urge on the motorway is to get an OEM chin spoiler on it - will help a lot.

As for suspension, you'll need to check compatability because yours is an early bus, so has different front suspension, but *if* they fit, go for some later Caravelle springs, which are -30mm and OEM Caravelle dampers - sorry but I was a Syncro driver and the front suspension's very different!

Prickwerks do various lowering kits, but it's a camper you may want to take it in and out of fields - lowering too much would be a stupid thing to do.  H&R or Bilstein dampers on -30mm springs should firm things up nicely and get the damping tightened up to suit.  2t is a lot to punt about on crapped out 25 year old dampers thus a new OEM kit will make a world of difference!

Stop titting about around the edges and get a Subaru Turbo nailed in there.

Here is the kit you need: http://www.smallcar.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=29816

Now man-up and crack on.  DannyP can do the wiring for you and probably source a motor.  www.Futbus.com can make it stop.

The 2.5 from certain Legacies has a reputation for headgaskets, but a 2.0 or 2.2NA from a Legacy, or Impreza should be pretty bombproof.

Obviously what this really needs is a 3.0 H6 out of an Outback, but that's something of a big ask.

Don't know much about these other than a friend at work has a bay window powered by a WRX motor, he doesn't seem to have any trouble with it other than lifting the nose when he plants his boot!

There was a really tidy job on one at whitenoise over the weekend, he just said he had to have the rad fans on a lot to keep it cool.

Bay or T25?  The T25 is watercooled anyway and has a 16litre cooling system, so would be plenty sufficient to look after a 2.0 NA Subaru motor.

I think Jord's is an aircooled T25. Would need the whole cutting for the rad at the front and all the cooling system plumbed in. Still much easier than doing it on a bay or split though.

Definitely a bay (Type 2). It was restored to it's former glory so looked totally original inside and out (until you looked behind the engine cover), was worth a fortune I'm sure.

Right, this is going to be returned to me soon for about a month whilst the engine finds its way to the garage.

I want to get on with the bodywork, so shall i pay someone or learn it myself? i want to really get the rust under control first off, its starting to creep in a lot of places.

Any volunteers eh?

Also the engines costing £2200 fitted, good price or does anyone know somewhere else?

I'd be a touch careful, if it's a genuine Vanagon camper then ripping out the interior might rather rip out all of the value in the thing.

Unless it's just a home-brew conversion.

Check how much it's worth at the moment before proceeding.

If you can find a way of valuing (put some feelers out maybe on a more appropriate forum) I'd say do this. Especially if a T4 is what you would prefer.

Ask Futbus.  He's more in tune with this sort of thing.

Or ask on the Prickyard or 80-Numpty, or look through VZI to see what's been sold through there.

It's the start of the camping season - someone WILL buy it for proper money at the moment.

In fact, take it to this and put a for sale sign in the window for double what you think it's worth.

Slightly better than those! Only failed on....

Seatbelt anchorage points corroded - wouldn't know, don't even wear them in the van cos be honest... You're fooked!
Fog light innop
Wipers not clearing screen
Some ball joint sh!t

So only £400 to get it through

What a deal, had it coming to be fair, the way it sailed through the last 2 tests baffled me

I've had a thought right..... Came to me whilst watching Custom My Car.... Hear me out!

I don't really want or need the pop top on my van.

My thinking is take it off, sort out the dirty roof rust, and replace the hole with some sort of plexiglass arrangement, possibly an opening roof type thing

Has this been done before? Anyone recomend a shop for the job?

These vans were occasionally supplied with a huge sliding sunroof as an option.

If you can find one of these that's been cut off a rotten van you could get it fitted by a good bodyshop.  You will need the whole roof section, but they are cool as hell.

What are the cars themselves like for towing? I understand the 2wd has a 200kgs less capacity but wondering if it would be okay for small cars...

Big steps forward on this tonight - stereo wired back in, leisure battery found to be dead, foam removed from the squab of the rock 'n' roll bed ready for replacement, fridge checked and run up - works fine, blown air heating checked and won't fire up, but fan runs, temp sender replaced on motor to bring gauge back working and probably a bunch of other stuff I've forgetten.

It WON'T be getting an ABF.

Nah - for a multitude of reasons - I'd need a manual gearbox, diesel mounting kit, wouldn't be able to put a good exhaust on it, the inlet manifold would be a pig to sort out and then there's the wiring.

'bout the only thing that could tempt me on this would be something from GoWesty:

Or a Subaru.  Ain't gonna happen though.

I always wanted to do a beach buggy with a scoobie engine in it!

Lots of effort with water pipes and radiator placement, but would be worth it for a WRX motor.

If you're going to do something fast/sporty/plastic with a Subaru drivetrain though, you might as well go Murtaya:

That looks interesting!

But would still prefer a Renagade

New foam to r'n'r bed squab:

Also pretty much removed the complete poptop tonight - there's a bunch of remedial work taking place over the next couple of days, which should stand it in good stead for many years to come.

Oh and work on Thursday sorted out the spilt charging issue - there was a wire broken and massively corroded down the back of the consumer unit - this semi-useless thing:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v627/diamondhell/High%20Plains%20Drifter/IMG_5159_zps7eda1f15.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/diamondhell/media/High%20Plains%20Drifter/IMG_5159_zps7eda1f15.jpg.html)

Which only outputs 120V (as it's US-spec) but it needed to be sorted as all of the lights etc run through it from the leisure battery.

Need a new gas control valve for the blown-air heating as the terminals have snapped off and here's hoping the roof repairs go OK this week!

First night in it on Saturday:

Gentle drive back to .:WR afterwards:

Re-foamed bed is dead comfy.  Fridge is exceptionally good - very cold milk on Sunday morning! Think the water pump might need priming at the moment, either that or swapping out.

Leisure battery turned up to replace the dead one on Thursday, but was leaking as soon as it was tilted - looks like it was damaged in transit, so the G3 battery did sterling service overnight instead :)

I know this is the equivalent of Facebook stalking an Ex, But had to pop in and make sure the old girl was doing ok.

Love seeing the work done so far mate, awesome to see it getting the love it deserves at last!

it has a power converter ???   wtf    that must have been one hell of an expensive option if it's original,  that or it's got a nigh on useless output power and drains the battery in about 30 seconds

Hook-up for when on campsites, innit - so you have mains power off a post into the van.

What kind of a c*nt wires in the camper electrics like domestic electrics, with earths coming back to the main camper fuse board?

Seriously?

The sort of Septic C*nt who also figured it only needed the two rear-most lights wired to the leisure battery (not the main fluo-tube over the cooker) and figured it'd be OK to just Scotchlock them in to another camper wiring circuit.

C*nts.

Yeah, still got more to sort.   Spent last night in it with the family though.

Took it to the Birkett 6hr Relay race.  Actually properly camped in it and slept in the upstairs bit for the first time:

200 miles there and back.  Don't really want to talk about the amount of fuel it used, but hey it's a 1.9 litre commercial-spec flat petrol motor designed somewhen in the 70s, attached to a three speed autogearbox, probably designed significantly before the engine, pushing around a 2tonne cottage.

It's not going to get good mileage, is it now?

New lights in the poptop as I refused to put the nasty plastic original light back in - it didn't have a cover anyway:

Much better - 12V LED strips from City Electrical Factors.

Lighting now switched to the leisure battery - was on the main battery power - madness!

Central heating system wasn't working because the switch terminals had broken off the stop valve.  That's now with some very useful people I know being repaired these valves don't seem to be easy to get hold of.

Hoping to have that installed and back up and running this weekend.

In the absence of the heater valve back from the repairers we resorted to washing and polishing:

So which petrol engine did this have, the 1.9 DF or the 1.9 DG?

I'm looking at getting one of these T25 things.
Title: Re: Ex-Random Jord's Vanagon Camper - Now living in Hell
Post by: Diamond Hell on 11 July 2014, 22:50
It had a DH code motor.

1.9 injection, not EU market spec.

You DON'T want a DF - gutless and low compression.

Ideally you want a DJ 2.1i - 112bhp

Or a JX 1.6TD

TBH motor doesn't really matter.  Buy on body.

I'm afraid the motor does matter, because I live in the London Low Emission Zone, I can't have an old diesel. Unless I want to pay £100 per day
Even some of the newer T4 diesel engines fall foul of this, so unless I find a T25 with a much newer diesel engine in it, then it'll have to be petrol.

I have seen a nice T25 with the 2.1 injection engine, which would be nice.... will have to wait a few weeks.
