Loss of compression
« on: 27 January 2017, 15:23 »
Had a amber engine light and EPC light come on dash. Took it into VW and was told there was a loss of compression in cylinder 3 and that the engine would have to come out in order to investigate further at a cost of £900! Only owned the car 2 months, has any one else experienced anything similar?

Maybe a timing chain slip and caused a bent valve or another timing chain tensioner failure. It could be a number of things lots to rule out.
They should be able to do basic first with the engine in. Check chain, stick a camera in to view piston and valves to rule some things out before any larger dismantle.
The cars are getting on a bit now and unless it was under a vw warrenty I think it wiser to go to a vw specialist rather than a main dealer.

It a 2011 (61) plate.

It was a snapped spring, damaging a valve. Spent 3 weeks in VW and cost £2800. Luckily I didnt have to pay a penny as covered by warranty and the rest paid for by where I bought it from.

If it wasn't covered by warranty I would of taken it to a specialist and not a main dealer.

Thanks for the suggestions
