Title: Want to buy a GOLF GTI Mk6 - Advice please.
Post by: VWayne on 17 February 2017, 18:38
Hi, to get straight to the point im interested in buying a golf GTI.

I currently have a 2009 Golf 1.4 TSI but ive always wanted a GTI.  Now with me turning 26 and having 5 years NCB im getting alright insurance quotes so i think this is the year i get my hands on one :)

I'm worried after reading the horror stories about the timing chain?

Anyone on here NOT had problems?
Should i take out some sort of warranty?

How much should i be looking to spend? I only want to spend around £9000 but i could spend more if needed for the right year & mileage

Zero problems from mine and I've had it 4.5 years(from new)
If you can, get a 2011 or newer and there shouldn't be any major concerns

To be honest, you would be extremely unlucky to get a problem with the timing chain tensioner. Yes - there are instances of failure but in the general scheme of things, most owners will not have had any issues at all.

As this problem has been bought out into the open, it makes it sound worse than it really is.

Mine's a 2010 plate, 35k mileage, remapped and has been absolutely flawless for the last 2 years.

I have a 2010 GTI and not had any problems apart from door hinge bolts coming loose after a year - changed under warranty. It gets an oil and filter change every 5k miles or 6 months and annual service. Coming up to 59k miles.

If I can add my recent purchase experience,

One month ago I paid £10,200 for a carbon grey 10 plate 5 door GTi, 60k, day two of ownership engine light came on, car was due a service so booked it in, and asked them to investigate, service completed and advised I required a new MAF, sourced one from VW, fitted, car running ok, another day passed, light comes on again, took it to another garage, they diagnosed air/oil separator required replacement, I had them inspect the cam chain tensioner too, and it was one of the early failure prone items, so I elected to have chain, tensioner, guides etc replaced, collected car last week, drove it 50 miles home, engine light back on! It's now back in the workshop waiting on a new inter cooler to arrive!! Great cars to look at, but I've spent around £1500 in 4 weeks since purchase!  buyer beware!

Ps my cam chain cover showed signs of chain slap, so was only a matter of time before my chain slipped!

Sorry to hear that!!! I had a similar experience with a Scirocco 1.4TSI early 2015 so i no how your feeling... 20 miles into ownership the EML came on and it never ended. I had to get rid in the end, i was gutted.

My current Golf 1.4TSI has been trouble free but it has only got 35k miles on the clock.

Keep me updated on how you get on, did you buy private?

Bought from a dealer, but I'm in N.E of Scotland, and he is in Bradford

If it doesn't behave on return this time its going, I can't be doing with problem cars.

Would cars registered in 2011 be affected?

How many miles would you say was too high for a 2009/2010 Car? I think i am going to buy one come late May, early June but ive been looking now anyway in case the perfect one was to come up for sale :)

Ive seen a couple at around 70k miles for like £9500-£10000? but I'm over thinking about the resale value after im done?

I do around 13-14K miles per year and will keep the car for around 3 years before i sell it.
Im thinking if i can find one around 50-55k miles or less by the time im done with the car it should still be under 100k miles before i sell it.

Also how many miles are you getting per tank?

I am doing 250-275 Miles per week & Im getting around 38MPG in my 1.4 TSI (Mixed driving)

It usually a case of condition versus miles, the "average" car loses 50% every three years, so calculate your deprecation on that rough estimate.

The best I've done over a tank is 37MPG with no town driving.

If being very careful I can crack 40. The best I've seen is 42mpg

I've seen on other threads you have a 3 door?  I'm looking for a 5 door as I've got a 4 year old daughter I taxi around daily and it makes my life easier 😊

Thanks anyway & im sure you will have no trouble selling.

The question is what you getting next? MK7??

I sold my mk6 gti last week [59, 5 door dsg with all the toys] and I must say it's the best car I ever owned. Bought it after it had done 50k miles and I tool it to over 102k, no issues apart from a random rattle. Mine was vw services every 10k, so I recommend one that has full service and been looked after.

I took a warranty for 1st year, just for peace of mind, might be worth doing depending on what you pay. No issues with tensioner and dsg is a dream.

GOLF R Estate on order, bring on June.....

Are 60 Reg cars affected?

Never got my hands on one, because my budget was on the low side... more £9500 i was looking to spend, you struggle to get anything decent and i don't really want to get a 2009 With like 100K Miles with the potential timing chain failures or it was a 2009-2010 that's been overly modified.

I also wanted a certain one,  White, 5 Door Manual low-mid Miles, you are paying more £11-13K.

I just got a tornado red 2010 GTI with a number of optional extras and 55k miles for £11k with a years warranty from the garage. I've seen some private sales for around £10500 but none lower than that.

Hope that helps

Nice! yeah that's the same sort of prices i have been seeing... for what i want i am going to have to pay around £11,500 I mean i could stretch for that but not right now. I've got some boring house stuff to sort first :)
