Title: Premium/Mid Range v Economy Tyres
Post by: Blueskiesdz on 26 March 2020, 12:13
Just wanted your thoughts and experience on the quality, driving experience and durability of economy tyres over mid/premium brands. As some know I’ve just purchased some 19’ Reinitz wheels from CM after advice/help from this forum and now it’s the tyres !

Normally I’d buy mid/premium but after buying the 2019 Gti pp then buying the wheels (as it had the standard Parker alloys), I wondered if buying cheaper tyres just for this time only would be ok. I’ve read some good reviews on economy tyres such as ‘Landsail’ and wanted to get anybody’s experience on them and other manufacturers. Failing that I’ll buy Falken 510 or similar 🙂

If you have economy what’s tyre did you go for any your review please 👍

The right tyres make all the difference, safe enjoyment of your expensive toy, the wrong tyres may end up either getting changed prematurely for better ones or result in an insurance claim. The price difference between the two won't be huge...

The only thing between the car and the road... the tyres. Don't go cheap.

Buy cheap, buy twice.

This. Never cheap out on tyres. Cheap tyres are referred to as ditchfinders for a reason.

By all means shop around for a good deal, but don't settle for mediocrity just to save money.

Putting decent tyres on is one of the best value 'modifications' you can do to a car.

Echo everyone else, premium tyres every time, ps4's (for me) are worth every penny.

If you do go mid-range, the Toyo Proxes Sports are pretty good. About £35 a corner cheaper than the P4S.

I’ll buy the same standard as I have before, I agree with all the replies. I just wanted to find out anyone’s experiences with these lower grade tyres. I’d read some reviews online and reviewers were saying they weren’t far off mid range tyres.

I'd not scrimp on tyres either but I have a friend who swears by vredestein ultrac vorti (I think that's what they're called).

I used to have some vredestein ultrac sessenta tyres on my old astra VXR and they were spot on as well.

I'd steer clear of things like landsail etc. though - I don't call them ditchfinders for nothing.

I once bought a set of sunny tyres. I was trading my old car in after it had it's MOT and needed a 'cheap' set of rubber to pass. They was worse in the wet than the near worn out dunlops that they replaced. It was the scariest 3 weeks of driving I've ever experienced, never again

Probably true. They were put a month before I handed it back!

PS4 is the only tyre you should be considering.

Tyres and brakes are two things you shouldn't skimp on , they are the only thing keeping you on the road at the end of the day.

A good mid range tyre i'd recommend is Cooper Zeon CS8. Had them on the back of my old E92, when you floored it you could feel the back end grip and squat. Great feeling when you push it out of a bend. A mate of mine had them on his Z4 35is and told me about them

Another +1 for the Eagles.  I've had the PS4s too, but I like the wet performance of the Eagles, which to be fair in this country is most of the time

I currently have a set of Flakerns on my GTI .Im pleased with them to date for the price as I needed 4 however I don't push it to the limit ( or cant ) Some tyre outlets seem very happy to promote budget tyres as a medium tyre. Buyer beware

I have PS4’s on the front. I’m pleased with the grip. Especially reducing tramping but they do seem to wear very quickly and I don’t drive hard.

Not noticed the ps4 wear any worse than others. The sport contact 5 does wear worse though. Good tyres though for grip.

I recently put Michelin PS4S on my 2019 PP when I got a set of Brescias to replace my Parkers.

Had no idea how much better the car could be. No more tramping, better ride and comfort. Better handling. It’s transformed the car.

Don't have my GTI long enough to comment on it specifically but precisely owned an audi TT which was always shod with Pirelli p zeros which I found excellent if a little soft wearing. Shortly before I sold it I stuck 4 budget tyres on it cos I knew i was changing it... It went from being a cat I really enjoyed driving to one I dreaded getting into every day. Grip was atrocious wet & dry and led to many butt clenching moments. Lesson learned!!
Also have experience with F1's which were great wet or dry.  My GTI came with 4 new p zeros & hair enough with them so far but getting used to the car. Might look at the michelins after these going by this thread.
Either way long story short.... Don't go budget, you will regret it. Even if you don't meet the ditch you'll hate the driving experience.

When I bought my current GTI it came with a pair of half-worn Bridgestones on the rear, which I assumed were the originals, and a pair of almost new Kumhos on the front.

Within a month I had improved the ride, handling and wet grip by replacing them all with Michelin PS4's at Costco.

My son recently bought his first GTI, a Polo.  Which came with a pair of Bridgestones on the rear, a Landsail on the offside front, and something round and black on the nearside front.  This afternoon we spent an hour or so at Costco having a set of Michelin PS4's fitted.

Mine lasted for 23,000 miles on the front, and I had them replaced a couple of months ago.  Costco policy is to put the new tyres on the rear, and they won't be persuaded otherwise.  So the rears, which are probably half worn, are now on the front, and will probably be replaced next year.

My (part time) job is in the motoring media, and I have access to just about every car magazine worth reading from around the world, many of which run tyre tests, and the best of these is Auto Motor und Sport in Germany.  The Germans take their tyres very seriously, and they rate the Michelins, along with Continental and Uniroyal highly.  The late, great Brian Ricketts, whose knowledge of, and advice on GTI's was worth listening to, always rated Uniroyals highly - his view was that they weren't a "fashionable" tyre, but they were very good in the wet, and therefore ideal for use in the UK.

Each to their own, but take advice from those who actually know what they're talking about.  There's nothing to be gained from buying the latest super-sticky track day specials and then finding yourself understeering towards what Martin Brundle refers to as "the scene of the accident" when you encounter a tricky right-hander on a cold, wet winter morning.

As ever, Mr Ricketts had a sound and eminently sensible viewpoint.
The Master himself.

What do you do in your work with motoring media related things? Must be a fascinating line of work.

Back on topic. I’m one of those people that hates, and is always suspicious, if there’s a lot of hype around a product.
The Michelin PS4S had a LOT of hype surrounding them from the very start. For once it was entirely justified and I’ve never been so impressed with a set of tyres as I was with the PS4S I put on my Ed40 in 30 odd years of driving hot(tish) hatches.
I’m far from a driving God and probably drive far more like an old lady now as opposed to my boy racer youth but in all areas where it counts the PS4S are fantastic all rounders.

That was a good price. I seem to recall paying £720 for 4x 225/35/19s on my GTI in 2018!

Got the Falken f510’s in the end fitted to the new reifnitz reps I got from CM. Hopefully a reasonable choice between the high/low end tyres.

I've had to put my space saver on as on the way home from work behind a tractor, out of the corner of my eye I saw something ping off one of the tractor tyres and not much after that I got a pressure loss warning. On inspection there was a 20mm jagged piece of metal in one of the centre grooves, will have to see if it is repairable and it's typical it's at the rear which still has 5.5mm (ish) of tread left rather than the front which do need replacing soon.

Thanks - I work with a friend who has a Syndication Agency - basically, he can re-sell articles and photos from one publication to another, world-wide.  I run the finances, but (usually) spend a couple of mornings per week in the office, so I'm up to date on what's going on in the Automotive media world.  Many years ago I had another friend who was a freelance journalist and photographer, and I used to do some driving for "action shots", on road and track.  Which isn't as glamorous as it sounds.

I knew Brian Ricketts well, having been a customer of GTI Engineering and subsequently BR Motorsport for many years.  Lovely chap, very interesting to talk to, and made a lot of sense.

Well the tyre is not repairable so factoring in the front's I have bit the bullet and having 4 Michelin PS4S fitted tomorrow.
Having to drive with the manky space saver which is not ideal at the mo but unfortunately no other option as either bugger all places open locally or ones that were had to order them in.
